At the time of writing, I have only played this game for three hours and have two achievements: "Play Singleplayer", for playing singleplayer... and "Bad Coder" for experiencing 500 programming errors.

10 outta 10.

I was originally part of the "Quake II is kinda boring" club, but honestly Nightdive's remaster addresses pretty much everything I didn't like about the game. The new enemy AI makes combat much more engaging, and the new lighting and environmental effects make areas so much more distinct from each other. It's just a much better experience, and I'll be darned if I'm not actually enjoying myself this time around. If you're a newcomer, or just someone who was kinda mixed on the game beforehand, this remaster is an easy recommend.

That being said, I imagine there are some people who might prefer the more simplistic combat of the original but still want the improved aesthetics of the remaster, and unfortunately there's not really a way of doing that right now. But I imagine that sort of person already owns the game on steam and therefore got the remaster for free, and I also suspect that there will soon be a mod or fan patch to remove that stuff if it really bothers you.

Only criticism is the game doesn't let me kill the floating skull bot that keeps trying to tell me things

Well... this WOULD be a good game, if I could play it anymore.

Unfortunately, FEAR 2 is a ridiculously temperamental game that will crash or freeze on startup if you so much as look at it wrong. I've gotten it working on my computer before *with a lot of difficulty* and I was able to play it for a fair bit. But since then, my copy of the game has been completely bricked because of a windows update. There are many, MANY potential solutions you can find online, and I've tried all of them. None of them work.

I cannot recommend you buy FEAR 2 until the publisher patches the game because it's very likely you will not be able to run it.

Now I am rating it positive, as it is a good game and good remaster through-and-through, as other reviews will explain in detail.

However, I want to make one small caveat clear: This game is really... REALLY short. 4 levels per episode with 4 episodes, and the levels aren't particularly long, either. I beat the game in about three hours, and nearly finished it in one sitting.

(Granted I haven't finished the addon levels yet, but that's mostly because I hit a roadblock where I'm not sure if the scripting broke or if it's just that cryptic. But either way I don't think the additional levels are very good.)

So bear in mind: You're gonna be paying 20 dollars for a three hour game. Even if it is relatively replayable, I think that's still a pretty steep asking price. Maybe wait for a sale.

It's fun for a little while because the mechanics of driving are all solid as ever... but the structure of the game SUCKS. It's this weird system where races are assigned to each individual car you unlock. It makes it absurdly transparent that each individual race is just another piece of the checklist. You're not really working towards anything as the game just kinda completes itself... you're just going through the motions. And if you're the sort of person who plays Ubisoft-style checklisted open world games you might think that's tolerable... but take it from someone who's played every Far Cry game, this is MUCH worse.

Bottom line: Extremely checklist-centered design makes this game really boring to play for more than a few hours.

Okay, I actually really liked this game, but you NEED to know this-

The Steam version of Far Cry 4 has a game-breaking issue where installing the map editor permanently bricks the game. Every time you try to open the game after install, it crashes, no matter what. You can uninstall the map editor, I even fully re-installed the game, nothing worked.

It's really crummy that an issue this significant hasn't been patched yet. I still think it's a great game that's worth buying, but either don't touch the map editor, or just buy it on U-Play or something.

It's a quality schlock zoomer shooter modding sandbox.

If I had to suggest 1 thing that the base game needs: It's that the AI could be a lot better. (In its current form it's not even bad, just serviceable)

It's well worth 15 bucks.

OK so here's the skinny - It's a really friggin good game but has some clear flaws and some definite low moments, but I still absolutely recommend it.
If you're interested in playing it, though, there's a bug that occurs with modern graphics cards where it freaks out and forces you onto the lowest settings for some bizarre reason. Here's the fix: https://www.gog.com/forum/quake_series/quake_4_low_res_texture_fix

(Note- I played this on "lieutenant" difficulty, which is harder than normal but not the hardest. I'm also not quite at the end, but I am approaching it.)
Quake 4 does a lot of things really well. Most of the guns feel really good to fire, it has genuinely impressive ally AI, and it has some SUBLIME atmosphere, particularly in the middle third of the game.

I'm not gonna lie though, you may be very easily turned off by your first impression. For the first, say, hour and a half or so, you have some pretty weak movement speed that is frankly just frustrating. This is later fixed by your character getting bodymods, but it shouldn't of been like that to begin with. You're not given access to many decent weapons, and you just generally feel pretty weak at this point. This is also where the game has the most vehicle segments, which are far and away the worst parts of this game (although they could very easily be much, much worse).
But even during these early parts of the game, you will still get a good game feel from the way the combat plays out and just how good the environments are sometimes.

Thankfully, the game does eventually find its footing, and it goes from a "fine" to a "genuinely solid" game very quickly. Your movement speed increases, you get a wider array of weapons, you're learning more about the flow of combat, and all along the way, you get to take in the oppressive atmosphere. Seriously, they do a magnificent job of making the Strogg feel like a ****ed up alien entity that absolutely needs to be eradicated.

There are a few issues I have with the main gameplay loop, however:
-Here's the big one first. Enemies feel kind of bullet-spongey. This is probably due to the difficulty I chose, but I feel like the amount of damage I TAKE is perfectly reasonable and a fair challenge. But it is annoying when I have to shoot a low-tier enemy with a shotgun five times at point blank range before he goes down. (Sometimes they take 1 shot tho, I dunno, it's really inconsistent)
-This game has one of the weakest sniper rifles I've ever used. Seriously enemies don't even have a flinching animation when they're hit, I can put like 3 entire rounds into them before they die, and it doesn't feel like I'm doing anything at all.
-Like I said, movement speed in the first third is just pointlessly slow, that should've been changed.
-Level design feels a bit overly-streamlined at times. This is one of those games where they use the same door model over and over but just leave the ones you need to go through conveniently unlocked. I feel like there was probably a better way to handle it.
-This is kind of a nitpick, but grenade physics are really bizarre. It can be hard to bounce them around corners because sometimes that just bounce directly back at you, even though you aimed it at the wall at an angle.

My final verdict is that although Quake 4 feels like it borrows heavily from Half-Life's FPS formula, it still feels like it gets Quake at its core: Combat that revolves around picking the best weapon for the right time. If nothing else, it gets that right. Heck, the story ain't bad either. It won't win any awards, but it did an excellent job of elaborating on what was setup about the Strogg in Quake 2 and making them a much more formidable foe. At the end of the day, if you're down for a schlocky mid-2000s shooter, Quake 4 has got you covered. You could certainly do a lot worse for 15 bucks.

Alright, here's the short version:

DOOM Eternal is, for the most part, a refinement of DOOM 2016. It rebalanced a lot of things, and generally it feels like the combat is better than ever (most of the time). That said, there are some areas where it falters, but it's well worth the price of admission.

Now, here's the long version:

Pros:
-Most of your weapons now feel of equal usefulness
-Weapon upgrades have all been significantly improved
-Progression system is largely more free-form, and a lot more interesting for repeat playthroughs
-Secret hunting is better than ever, giving you the exact amount of information needed to figure out where loot is
-Mission structure allows for a ton of environmental variety
-Story is very well put together and highly interesting (although you will be very confused at first)
-Excellent customization of hud/ui elements
-Boss fights are all excellent
-Killing enemies is more satisfying than cleaning the lint rack from your dryer

Cons: (This looks longer, but it's mostly just me elaborating)
-Most of the levels feel much more linear than in Doom 2016 (with one, maybe two exceptions)
-Unlike the first game, it often feels like you're not progressing towards something. You're just doing a series of things.
-Enemy AI feels a bit weaker than the last game, they seem to group together a lot more often when it seems like they probably shouldn't.
-I like the Marauder conceptually, but I don't like how they used him. They build him up as this rival character, but after his first appearance, they just throw him in to cap off combat encounters. Except he's clearly designed for 1v1, so this often times means killing all the remaining demons in a hurry, meanwhile the Marauder is just out of sight swinging at you, and then they don't even do any more story stuff with him after his first appearance. He loses his novelty fast.
(They also kinda did this with the Doom Hunter, but he works a lot better in group encounters, so I can forgive that.)
-They nerfed your ammo reserves a bit too hard. I understand that they were trying to make it so you'd use your entire arsenal, rather than your favorite two weapons... but they just went too far. You're very frequently running out of ammo, even after upgrading it to maximum. Ammo upgrades also no longer apply to the chainsaw, and those gas tanks now refill only one slot. (Mercifully the game will recharge one chainsaw slot for you) As you can imagine this means that you're very frequently going to be all out of ammo, to a frustrating degree.
-The BFG somehow feels like an afterthought in this game. It now takes up a slot on your weapon wheel, which means you can accidentally scroll to it and waste a shot. It also maxes out at two shots, they are MUCH more stingy with its ammo now, and it doesn't even do as much damage. What a shame.
-The Crucible only really gets used at the end of the game. It's designed as a sort of melee BFG that can instakill any enemy you point it at. But they only give it to you in the final act, and they're very stingy about this guy's ammo, too. (Except at the endgame, of course)
-They are not kidding with those system requirements. This is a demanding game. My PC kinda scapes on the edge a little, and I was able to run it with no issues 90% of the time. Real shame about the other 10% tho.
-The ending is extremely disappointing. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say it's one of those "That's it? That can't be it..." sort of endings. You have been warned.

Yeah... I definitely do recommend this game, especially if you were a huge fan of Doom 2016. But... I dunno. I kinda wound up liking it less and less as it went on. The core gameplay has been refined, but a lot of the new stuff just feels a bit sloppier than the last game.

But hey, it's still really great. Give this game your money.
I know I said a few things here that some people will disagree with, and that's fine. Comments are open, you're welcome to discuss.
