The fact that Sony is doubling down at every turn to enforce this egregious decision out of pure greed, should be reason enough for anyone to stay clear of it.
I absolutely love the game, it's the most fun I've had in a long time, but if I have to sacrifice my online security and personal data to not be locked out of using a product I purchased and legally own, Sony is actually just out of their minds.
They have shown in multiple ways that a PSN account is by no means necessary for the game to function, not even crossplay functionality, and their excuses for it being for the safety of consumers are blatant lies.
If they do not reverse their decision, I will be demanding a full refund. It's ridiculous that we as consumers even have to deal with this kind of scummy behavior in the first place.

They're killing the game. Simple as.

Edit:
We won boys. As of this edit, Sony has reversed their decision to force players to connect their Steam and PSN accounts.
However, as this is just damage control and them trying to save face, for the foreseeable future, I will not be changing my recommendation for the game. This controversy has revealed and shown some absolutely nasty sides from the non-consumer entities, and there needs to be some kinda consequences for their actions, however little they may seem.
I would encourage everyone to be cautious about the future of this game, should another similar situation happen. They burned a lot of player goodwill with this one, and it is not an easy thing to get back.

See you on the frontlines.

Edit 2:
After some consideration due to various conversations with fellow divers, I've decided to switch my recommendation status of the game to a resounding yes. As I mentioned above, I absolutely love the game, and it's great fun. There's a real sense of community between players (at least when you don't run into the occasional troll), and it repeatedly surprises me how a few strangers can work together as well as I've experienced, all with barely any communication, although it's great when you get to talking with some of them, stick around to play a few games, and then head out with a truly earned GG.

My second reason is that, despite various comments made by a couple of the community managers (Not Twinbeard, bro's a legend) and a few of the community discord moderators (who have as little information about internal matters as us players, and are just there to keep the peace and enforce the server rules), the fact of the matter is that this entire situation was caused by Sony and their corporate demands. The devs have taken a lot of unwarranted crossfire from this situation, have very little to do with the situation as a whole, and they have overall done a great job with the game.

Support your devs, let them keep doing good work. Don't submit to corporate greed. We all dive together, or we don't dive at all.
