A startlingly good FPS game that takes a lot of cues from older games. Highly enjoyable, if a bit hard to find a full game.

Man, I was skeptical at first about translating the original to 3d, but holy crap this blew me away. It's faithful to the original in all the right ways, but adds so much more depth (literally).

I'm excited to see how the development pans out, but even now it's already well worth the money, in my opinion.

This game is, to me, the ultimate culmination of arcade-style racing games. You can boost, you can fly, you can do tricks... the stages twist and turn upside down with hazards littering the track. Basically everything you could want from a "Hold forward to win" kind of racing game. It has a distinctly "vaporwave" aesthetic with cool tunes and neon visuals that pulse with the beat.

It's not necessarily something that's going to suck you in day after day, but when you get the itch to play it, it satisfies that need very thoroughly.

This is the sandbox survival game you're looking for. It's what Minecraft wishes it could be.

The graphics appear somewhat dated, but that's far outclassed by the superior quality of gameplay.

There's no avoiding the hordes of zombies - no way to build a floating base with all of the necessities you could need, and no wall that they can't break through. It's the most satisfyingly brutal and in-depth zombie survival game I've ever played, and it's not even out of alpha yet.

2024 Update: It has been a uniquely special treat to follow the development of Factorio over the years, culminating in this year's 2.0 and DLC releases. I cannot overstate how much Wube have demonstrated a mastery of game dev skill and a holistic understanding of what makes their game fun, and on top of it all they put forth an incredible amount of information and insight into their process and thoughts. I can easily say, without a doubt, that Wube are my favorite Dev team. I look forward to their future projects.

-Original Review-
Have you ever played around in a sandbox game and thought, "Man, I wish I could just automate this part."? Did you ever dabble in logic gate simulations like Redstone in Minecraft or similar?

If so, this is the game for you. The entirety of the game revolves around managing and manipulating resources scattered around the map. The further into the game you get, the more ways you have of automating and streamlining things you've been doing by hand.

It's an extremely satisfying and organic progression moving from a schmuck picking up rocks with his bare hands to having a fully automatic mining operation generating thousands of smelted iron plates every minute.

The only downside to this game is how incredibly absorbing it is. Be prepared to lose several hours out of your day every time you launch this game.

This game is a REALLY mixed bag. First, as others have said, it requires Uplay to play the game. I didn't have any troubles with my account or logging in or such, but your mileage may vary.

Now, for the actual game. My interest in this title was purely due to the incredible fun I had playing an earlier title in the series, Anno 1602. I got this game purely due to wanting a modern and HD take on that same gameplay. It does deliver on that, but in more ways than I expected, and not all of them great.

Pros:
- Excellent Art style and high-resolution/high-detail environments.
- Great foundational gameplay, with many aspects still keeping true to the formula of the old game I loved
- Lots of customization options
- Helpful hints from the game's "AI" character will ease you into gameplay much more than I'd expected. It still takes some time to get the strategy and nuance, but you won't be completely lost like with many other strategy/builder games.
- Full camera rotation is excellent for controlling how you see the land.

Cons:
- Mediocre sound track
- Unintuitive UI and menu systems.
- There are a number of Excessively complicated resource and research systems that feel like they only serve to annoy or artificially gate progress.
- The quest system is completely arbitrary, with an aggravating amount of RNG involved. At best they distract from whatever you're doing for only marginal rewards, but more commonly they will tarnish your reputation with the NPC races. An inordinate number of these 'quests' are simply a timed "Where's Waldo?" game with infuriatingly absent hints at where on an island to look.
- The trading "licenses" resource is completely gated behind the quest system, and the possibilities for what you can buy are totally RNG, so if there's an item you want, you'd better hope you were able to get enough quests and complete them, and then hope one of the NPCs is selling the item you need.

Neither pro nor con:
- They have multiple 'races' to play as. This introduces a new layer of complexity that, to me, feels a little unnecessary. It does add a lot of strategy to your pre-planning, and increases the replayability, though. Also, it's important to note that in a normal game, you'll eventually gain access to all of the races and their buildings, but only after basically maxing out the one you start as, so there's a good chance you might not even get there because the game is over by then.
- There are underwater islands you can settle after reaching a certain way through a game. They look cool, but it's really awkward with the camera, and it feels completely unnecessary that they're underwater - they're basically just normal islands with a different set of resources and buildings allowed, and they're gated behind settlement progression.

I'd say I enjoy the game quite a bit. It's got a lot of the boxes checked that I was looking for from the earlier title, and with a lot of the improvements I wanted to see. So if you're a fan of the previous titles in this series, I can say this is a good entry. But there's definitely a lot more that they added that I don't like, so it's a far cry from perfect. Enough so that I often find myself wishing that they just had made an HD 1602 with all of the original gameplay untouched. It will do until that happens, though, if it ever happens.

Overall, I'd say that if you're into this kind of game, and you have no qualms with Uplay - by all means, get the game. It's not worth full price, though, so probably hold out for a deep sale.

The learning curve is dramatically steep, and there's an extremely heavy reliance on your teammates' abilities. It's largely okay to play if you have a full team composed of people you know and can do mic chat with to coordinate, but as soon as you can't communicate, and especially if you play with randoms, it's infuriating.

I would only recommend this game if you can reliably get a group of 3-5 people together to play with, and you're good at theorycrafting and/or following builds online.

An excellent game with elements of RTS and Dungeon Building/Tower Defense. The narrator is funny, and the gameplay is entertaining.

An intriguing third-person-shooter take on the traditional 'Mars settlers encounter alien lifeforms' genre. The story takes obvious cues from similar settings, but what the story lacks, the game makes up with amusing and interesting gameplay

Story Pros:
- The main character is easy to understand and grasp his personality.
- The importance of the previous games in the series is minimal; what you need to know to understand the story is all contained in dialog etc., so you won't feel lost if you haven't played the previous games.
- The main character is able to communicate important details of what's going on without directly talking to the player, thanks to his dialog with his "S.A.M." AI on his wrist.
- The comraderie of the main character and a number of his acquiantances makes it easy to enjoy dialog, instead of it feeling like dead-pan exhibition.

Story Cons:
- Due to the importance of your character's past, you cannot customize your character at all visually.
- The S.A.M. AI on the character's wrist is near omnipotent at times, like finding routes for you through completely uncharted caves, yet other times seems completely oblivious to certain details.
- The story will frequently, intentionally mislead you through certain portions of the story, often through the AI either not providing all the details, remaining silent, etc. This tends to create a feeling of Deus Ex Machina when the Story says you can do X thing to fix the situation, long after you should reasonably have been told, or even after it made it seem like that thing was impossible (No spoilers, but the ending definitely reeks of this)
- There are a number of cuts the story takes through Cutscenes. The cutscenes themselves are actually quite nice, however, there are a number of occasions where the game will painstakingly walk you through every detail of a particular scenario, and the abruptly move you to the next chapter with no details of what happened in between (I.E. cutscene shows you loading up on a truck with your buddy, talking about where they're going, and then it immediately goes to another cutscene where you've been at that location for some time and are already talking about heading out again.)

Gameplay Pros:
- Physics & Destructible terrain are immensely enjoyable. This is seriously the best thing about the game. As you progress, you get a number of unique weapons and skills that will wreak havoc on your surroundings. And once you've had your fill of destroying buildings and sending your enemies flying, your AI can use a 'Nano forge' to repair things like bridges, so you need not worry about accidentally destroying your path to the next objective.
- There is never any time where the game takes away your progression through the skill tree, nor any of your weapons. Once it's unlocked, you can expect it to be available for the rest of the game.

Gameplay Cons:
- Objectives aren't always clear as to how you should get where you are going, unless you use the 'Compass' tool which projects the direction to your goal onto the terrain around you. There's no middle ground between, "I'm lost" and Handholdiong from the game. I would have liked more well-designed levels that make it a little easier to find where you are going without asking for an explicit map.
- Gameplay time is fairly short. Two full playthroughs took me just under 12 hours.

Visuals:
- Textures are magnificent. The developers knew what they were dealing with, and didn't leave anything blurry or pixelated.
- Meshes are a little angular at times, but instead of looking odd, they made sure to make the artistic style incorporate angles as seeming intentional (i.e. crystals on the walls, angular architecture, and spiky enemies)

Overall, I definitely recommend the game simply because of how enjoyable it is to be able to destroy the large majority of your surroundings. It makes you feel in control, and powerful.

It's definitely not a legendary game like Half-Life 2 or Portal, but it's a good 6 or 7 out of 10. Definitely worth a shot if you see it go on sale.

If you like teamwork games, if you like First Person Shooters, if you like cheeky humor... You'll love this game.

From planning and strategizing with friends to decide how best to case and rob a bank, to air-dropping into the aftermath of an earthquake to recover merchandise, to simply waltzing into a place guns blazing for maximum intimidation, all while a mysterious man provides you with information and witty quips about your job. There is so much to do in this game you'll find it hard to run out of entertaining scenarios.

Basically, take Left 4 Dead's teamwork-based FPS gameplay, add a dash of a leveling system, skills, and stealth options, and set it in an urban sprawl rife with crime. The best part is; the majority of your targets for crime are already criminals themselves.
