If you've come across Abyss Odyssey expecting a procedurally generated brawler/platformer hybrid, then you might find yourself slightly annoyed by the combat system. While the game's art direction, soundtrack and lore is charming and invigorating, the combat system plays much closer to an arcade fighter. Say goodbye to spectacle fighters' button-mashing and brawlers' single-button win-strategies. Abyss Odyssey's combat forces you to think before you act and make each move count. From zoning enemies using projectiles, to frame-canceling attacks into special moves.
For all the good the game does, its tutorial is sparse and lacking, and puts players into the hotseat of "die and learn".
The game's difficulty isn't excessive, with a single clear taking as little as a few hours of trial and error (your mileage may vary). If the game suffers from one single problem, it's the blatant input-reading that goes on during certain encounters. While this adds to the overall difficulty of the game, it's hard to tell whether an enemy is "smart", or simply cheating.

Despite the resurgence of popularity in Metroidvania-style exploration games, few games take a bold approach the way UnEpic does. Throwing a mish-mash of pop-culture humor into a lighthearted trek through a dungeon, UnEpic's ten or so hours of gameplay are ripe with puzzles, traps and all the usual D&D shennanigans you've come to love and expect out of medieval fantasy.
This being said, UnEpic isn't perfect. Boss fights like Neuron are downright infuriating, and some game mechanics like invisible, flying enemies, rooms full of poisonous enemies and a lack of antidotes slow down the pace of the game's last act considerably.
UnEpic is anything but, and despite its flaws, shines through as a diamond in the rough.

Long Live The Queen plays a lot like a dating sim, without the dating, and an interactive visual novel (like Hate an analogue story and Katawa Shoujo), putting you in the shoes of a young princess facing a hostile world that is out to kill her after the loss of her mother. Challenging, quirky, playful and surprisingly deep, LLTQ loves to give you a myriad of decisions, and makes you face the consequences afterwards. If you enjoy VNs, this may just be the game for you; but be warned, the only action you'll see is in the text.

Arkham Origins is the third instalment of the Arkham universe for Batman and set as a prequel. Although it bears many similarities to the other games developped by Rocksteady, this particular title was done by splash damage, and bears some of the mannerisms of that studio.
Although Origins is not by any means a bad game, many of the mechanics that are traditional to the arkham universe seem clumsily implemented; the freeflow combat system sees an enormous difficulty spike midway through the game and quickly devolves into repeated countering and gadget-spamming.
The game punishes you for being agressive, and does not reward you for taking risks in any circumstance. Furthermore, the predator sequences poorly implement stealth, with enemies seeing through walls and grates. The greatest challenge in these moments though, is the terrain, as it always seems to work against you in some form.

Although these flaws may seem harsh, they don't destroy the experience completely; Origins remains a solid addition to the Arkham universe and isn't unfun in any respect, but for a fully priced title the results feel slightly unpolished and a little underwhelming in general. For sale price though, you'll be spending a good 10-20 hours on the campaign, if you don't muck too long on the collectibles, which is something fairly surprising for a high fidelity AAA release.

ToME is what roguelikes should aspire to be. It's enormously complete, with tons of content, creative and an absolute bundle of fun. Although the graphics may seem primitive, the enormous, randomly generated gameworld and quests are easily going to give you a run for your money. The progression system is fair, and allows you to learn the game before giving you access to more complex, tactically challenging classes. Easily one of my favorite releases this year.

Beautiful, enchanting and inspiring; bioshock infinite is quite possibly the best game to have graced release in 2013. From the colorful background, the beautiful music, the carefully crafted story and the symbolism the game exhudes, one would be hard pressed to find a better argument in favor of games as an artform. Bioshock infinite gets it right, and leaves the player satisfied with the experience from start to finish.

Even though it may be considered the weakest of the bioshock games, this second instalment is still a strong choice for those seeking a story-driven first person shooting experience. Although the pricetag is hefty, and the game is far from perfect, this second visit to rapture is still full of surprises and twists, and help shape the reality that was Rapture to those who enjoyed the first game. On the other hand, this should not be a person's first foray into the Bioshock universe, but rather a pleasant addition to the lore surrounding Andrew Ryan's submerged city.

As the second release for the Arkham titles, Arkham City is quite possibly one of the best entries in superhero game history. Gotham feels adequately dark, the plot is spot-on, the gameplay never gets stale, and the voice acting is among the best that was ever produced in video game history. Arkham City is a must-have for any batman fan.

There's little to say about Bastion that hasn't been said already; the game is a colorful, gorgeous masterpiece that bursts with character. The narration, storytelling and music easily put to shame triple-A titles, and the game never ceases to feel fun for the entire length of its campaign.

Reminscent of old-school zelda, anodyne brings a few unique concepts to the tried-and-tested isometric RPG elements. Namely, the ability to swap tiles late into the game. But what makes Anodyne incredibly special is the eery story that surrounds it. For the entire game, you feel as if something is slightly off about the world around you.
