What can be said by me that hasn't already been said by everyone else?

The game is a remake, or well, more of a re-imagining of the critically acclaimed masterpiece, Resident Evil 4. The original game has been put on equal if not more systems than Skyrim and that is for a reason. I play the OG game at least once annually since I have been in love with it since the first time I layed hands on it as a kid.

When the remake was announced I was hyped and sceptical as a huge fan of the original, I wanted to see one of my favourite games get the modernisation treatment, but I was scared of potential changes obviously. One of my biggest fears was that they would take the gameplay and controls of Resident Evil 2 and 3's remakes and make a few tweaks and just slap it on the game and call it a day, unfortunately that's exactly what they did.

When the game was first released I loved seing the familiar locations in beautiful fidelity, but I had endless complaints about art direction and control changes being used to the original. In my opinion the controls were not bad in the original, just different. My argument was, "If you're good at basketball but bad at football, you don't go to football players and tell them to change the rules to play more like your prefered sport, you instead learn to play football if you want to play it." Same goes here. To suggest that these controls are objectively "better" is aburd to me, they aren't it's just the standard that YOU happen to be more used to and therefore prefer. Just like the basketball example, the tank controls weren't bad, you just never got used to them as the OG was very consistent and free withing the limitations it had once learned.

The gameplay and combat are a bit annoying as the consistency of the original is completely gone, replaced by heavy amounts of RNG. A lot of people were so happy about the more intense "difficulty" of the remake, failing to realise that it's not harder, just more random, so you randomly mess up making it SEEM harder when in actuality it was nothing but a failed coin flip. The amount of random systems in place is insane, you have random bullet-bloom so anywhere withing your crosshair you'll land the bullet, now if you randomly manage to hit your target you may randomly get the enemy to stager or not, or you might get a random crit, but if neither of these things happen then you might get hit and if you are unlucky then multiple enemies decide to hit you all at once making you randomly end up in a stun loop since post hit invincibility is no longer a thing. A lot of people claim that the original is too easy, but I beg to differ, I believe that the original is simply always consistent and arcady, meaning that it's predictable and therefore learnable. It's a game you have played for two decades now and when a game is learnable because of consistency it gives the illusion of being easy when it actually isn't you just grew up and got too good at it, do professional sports players complain about their sport of choice being too easy or have they simply spent a lifetime in it and are simply top tier? Exactly, and in sports you don't randomly change the rules to make it randomly more difficult, you have consistent rules, proving my point. They should have made this harder, not randomly tickle my muscle memory but not always, it's just frustrating. If you want proof of how annoying the new systems can be, then look no further than trying to 100% the shooting range where you'll sometimes know the entire thing to a T but the game decided your bullet would randomly go somewhere else because of bullet bloom so NOPE, you're not hitting that skull target at the end, re-do the WHOLE thing over and over until you get the coin toss, followed by yet another random slot machine as rewards! So much random! Sure this isn't a must, but as a completionist, please understand my frustrations. But all in all these changes, while annoying, do server to re-balance the weapons giving them all a necessary use case instead of just going with a maxed out Red 9 with a laser like we all did in the OG as the other weapons were quite literally useless because of it, so it has it's positives. All I'm saying is, if there's so much random in a game that my gameplay almost doesn't matter, then I might as well watch a film as I'll have just as much control over that as some parts of the combat of this game. BUT once you get out of the muscle memory of the OG and look at it as a completely different game, or like the realistic spin on a classic, then it actually starts to grow on you as it did on me. I don't view this as the OG's replacement that I hoped it would be originally, and I also don't view it as a remake, I think the best way to view it is the other 50%, play the OG, then play this and together they give a complete and amazing feeling of the Resident Evil 4 experience. I could go on and on about this game's mechanics but nobody is going to unironically read this so why bother, perhaps I'll do a YouTube retrospective at some point as my notes about this game have grown considerably over the years, both good and bad. To the few tempted to claim "Skill issue!" to my complaints above however, may I just say I have over 10k hours on the OG on my PS2 and I have completely 100% the remake meaning I did get the S+ on Professional dificulty, so this is not the cause if I may say so myself, just to get that out there, not bragging, just a preemptive reply to that snarky comment some itch to say at any given opportunity of disagreement within gaming.

Random sidenote here about game lasers, am I the only one annoyed at how they are portrayed lately? How did we figure out a realistic way for them to behave in 2005 but can't get it right nowadays? I mean the laser behaved and interacted with the enviroment just fine in OG RE4, Dead Space 1-3 but somehow they are so strange in RE4R and even the Dead Space Remake. I know this is a nitpick but it genuinely annoys me how games handle lasers in modern times. (I explained what I mean here in detail but had to delete it because of length, I reached the character limit of Steam reviews, lol)

As for story and dialogue changes, I honestly prefer what they did here as all the lovable "cheesyness" of the original aside, most characters got an upgrade here and the game is better off for it in my opinion. Mercenaries and Separate Ways, while no longer part of the main game for free, got much needed upgrades and they feel a lot more fleshed out this time around. I especially love what they did to my childhood hero Luise as he is FAR more interesting here than the one note character he used to be that I still loved for some reason.

Either way, there's so much I want to add, but again who will read this. I guess my TL;DR is that the game is an amazing mixed bag remix of the OG game we all love and despite my grievances with some changes that were made to the OG's formula, the game grew on me over the last few months of revisiting it and 100%-ing it and despite some negative things in this review, I cannot help but to recommend it either way. If you are curious for some reason as to what I would like to see as a Resident Evil game instead of this, my dream game would be the story, setting and art direction of OG RE4, with the graphics of RE4R, the care and love of the RE4HD Project, with the gameplay and inventory system of RE5 with menu loading and all that fun stuff and the controls of RE4-5. I know this will never happen unless somehow fan made, but still, let a man dream. Either way, let's wrap up here, if you love Resident Evil, and especially Resident Evil 4, I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy this, even if just as a half disappointing walk down memory lane. I believe this game is a pretty "meh" remake, but an absolutely AMAZING game on its own and I'll continue to play it and it's inspiration for many years to come.

I've been playing this game since the Beta and knew about the franchise since the original mod before the standalone Source game even. This game is a bit of a mess as it has had its ups and downs, some bugs are still there and the devs don't seem to care at times AND there was the whole thing with massive layoffs after they were bought up by Focus etc BUT... I'm still going to give this a thumbs up and recommend it nontheless as it's still an awesome game with a tight comunity and a great brutal mix between arcady fun and vulgar gore with realism mixed in a crazy bag of fun times. :P

The game might be dying, the devs might not care, it might be buggy but hell, don't lie to me and say you're not having a blast with the homies each and every time in this. Join different servers for different flavours of this special comunity! On the EU servers you can learn Russian for free as it's all you'll hear along with some rare broken attempt at English. Join US East for instant N words and F slurs upon loading in! Join US West for an actual good time with semi normal people. Try Asia to not understand a word but have your butt handed to you 24/7 because Asia. Perhaps Russia is more your flavour... I'm, guessing these servers are empty as they are all on EU servers speaking their language even though there's a separate server for exactly that, but fear not as I'm well aware I should go F myself for suggesting that to them and I'M obviously the dumb one and the problem here! :D I would suggest Australia if you want the cool experience of playing the game upside-down, but that's a preference thing. Lastly we have South America, y'all are probably chill, I'll never know as the ping on your servers for me is so high I teleport to another dimension each time, so I only got a few glances of y'all, but they were short and sweet so I have nothing to add here.

See y'all on the battlefield, as the cringe lords say, and hopefully we'll win el'ahwan!

1. They use the money they get from this early build to make the game so buy it if you want it to be a thing.

2. It's Postal... I mean for real guys... just buy it... don't ask questions... trust me... in these extremely politically correct times you NEED this. It's not healthy for you, but you'll feel great! ;D
