Early Access Review
Clearly early access but a good start. I'm definitely interested in seeing how this game develops!

I'm kind of conflicted with this game. The gameplay is great, the art direction is going to age well, and the music slaps. Everything else about the game is very barebones. There's only versus (local and online) and an arcade mode. Many of the modes and features from the first game aren't here and won't be for a while. There's a cash shop that already has bundles, paid currency, and things like account upgrades that boost the number of coins you get (coins are the grindable currency used to get cosmetics). None of it affects gameplay but it does kind of cheapen the game. I understand they are a small team and these cosmetics will help fund the game's development, but $30 for two modes is disappointing.

If you just want a really good platform fighter to play online, this is it. If you're looking for a bit more, I would probably come back in a few months to see if anything new was added. Story mode, workshop, custom colors, and more are all planned but it's going to be a while.

Is good.

Edit: Game is extremely buggy, it's barebones, and the netcode feels worse than it did in beta.

Edit 2: Game is still buggy but devs patch fast. Netcode is better now. The game launching in a barebones state is still pretty questionable.

Four games, one of which has some of the greatest JARPG combat ever created (KH2FM), and two movies for a cheap price. Worth every penny

It's still crazy to me that I got this game for $12 before 1.0 released. I haven't played a survival game this good since Minecraft.

A well-made and super fun 3D collectathon with elements of Pikmin sprinkled in. The level design is fun, the tinykin are cute, and there is a good amount of content here for a $25 game. I was able to 100% it within 9.5 hours. Definitely worth it at its base price and it often goes on sale for much less.

GRIS takes a while to get going and likely won't be for everyone. It's not much of a traditional platformer where there is difficulty in the stage design. With an extremely slow start (which made me quit this game twice before finally going through the entire thing), it's more of a walking simulator with basic platforming abilities. This is a game where you admire the art and music more than anything. Absolutely worth it if it's on sale.

Genesis Noir is one of the best interactive movies I've played and I don't really know how else to describe it. I wouldn't call it a visual novel either because you do control a character in third person. Calling it an "experience" makes it sound shallow or like I'm overstating it. Either way, Genesis Noir has very few gameplay elements, but everything else is done extraordinarily well. The music, art direction, setpieces, level transitioning, etc. are all some of the best I've seen from this.

I'm really looking forward to the sequel and hope they've improved on the "game" part of it. It's a fantastic concept for a really good traditional point-and-click adventure game.

Helldivers 2 is kind of in a weird spot for me. The Visuals can be great but the game itself is far more repetitive than any other co-op shooter I've played. It's fun but so is almost every other 4-player game.

Weapons:

The weapon unlocks are all slightly better versions of the base automatic, shotgun, and precision weapons, which are a bit bland. There's nothing really unique you can get as a primary or secondary. The tertiary weapons (stratagem power weapons) are mostly more of the same. Instead of having an automatic rifle, you have an LMG. Instead of a semi-auto, you have a sniper that shoots huge rounds. There are a few unique options like a grenade launcher and rocket launchers, with the latter having a cool mechanic that lets a teammate help you reload, which speeds up your reloading significantly. There's also stuff like a laser and a Tesla gun that does chain lightning damage. I really wish there was more of this.

Stratagems:

These are cool in theory but a large number of stratagems also have the same issue the weapons have. Most of them are upgraded versions of the base option. You can call in a small explosion or a large one, an orbital laser, a smoke screen, and a few other options. It's hard to tell whether you should bring the Eagle version of something or the Oribital one because they both do basically the same thing. Another problem is that most of these become obsolete once you have the upgraded option. There are more unique stratagems such as a Tesla coil AoE, sentries, a drone that follows you and shoots bullets or a laser, a bubble shield, and a "jump pack" (not a jetpack you control). Just like with the weapons, I wish there was more fun stuff like this.

Mission Variety:

This is Helldivers 2's weakest gameplay aspect. Most of the missions are all a variation of the same thing. "Kill x number of y", "Collect x", or "Interact with a screen". Map variety is also lacking. It seems like most of the planets have the same reused map layouts.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, it is a fun game but something like Deep Rock Galactic has more depth to it and is cheaper. I hope content updates for this game add new ways of navigating (verticality/underground areas/air combat) and aren't just more "kill x number of y" or doing Among Us tasks on a terminal screen. I recommend this game but I don't think the $40 price tag is justified for how little there is. And with the server issues at the moment, you're paying $40 to watch a queue timer retry for hours with no way to see how far into the queue you are.
