Aliens 1986 Movie Enjoyers
I've seen the movie maybe fifteen times now. This game is for those of us who love the movie. Captures the vibes and aesthetics of the movie pretty well.

I've been playing solo and with mods. I originally played on PC gamepass without any mods, back when the game was pretty new. It was a good game then, just didn't have enough going for it to keep me playing. I can't say much about online play as I haven't tried it.

I decided to play it again on Steam, and the updates have been great overall. Happy to see this game continue to be supported, it's a lot better now and I'm seeing myself play it way more. Desperately want a sequel to this.



Fun specifics for anyone curious about picking up
  • Amazing perk system, you have to efficiently incorporate perks you earn.
  • You get turrets and sentry guns, which are especially great in horde mode. I'm using mods to improve them and make them last longer.
  • Challenge cards system, a great way to change up gameplay. The recent addition of the refabrication processor allows you to throw away your boring cards for a random card(s).
  • Multiple horde mode maps now, I think there was only one when I originally played this game. Replayability is way better now. There's even a Turrets map where you constantly load ammo into Turrets.
  • So much to unlock, for anyone hoping for more reason to keep playing.
  • The game respects the Aliens as a foe. I expected to fight hordes of Warrior and Drone Aliens, but the game instead adds basic grunts called Runner Aliens. The Drone and Warrior aliens from the movies are far more powerful, with the Warrior being a mini-boss. Helps maintain the terror they're meant to evoke.



Hopes for a sequel or update
For anyone that's played Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 1/2 Garden Ops mode, the devs could take some inspiration as Garden Ops is amazing (equivalent of Horde mode). I've poured hundreds of hours in Garden Ops.

  • More durable and longer lasting sentry guns. Aliens rip through them pretty easily especially in Horde mode.
  • More fabrication points in Horde mode. It takes around 6 waves to finally get an armoured sentry gun that a Warrior Alien will break pretty quickly. And the sentries disappear after around 5 minutes.
  • Way more consumables - Sentry flamethrower, caltrops, shields etc.
  • Better bot scaling. I'm generally managing twice the stats of the bots across the board, and they are downed easily in Intense difficulty, even after the most recent update which is meant to improve them.
  • Customizable bots - change bot class. Would love to mix and match different classes during solo play.
  • Rifles plus Sentry gun class please.
  • Boss wave randomizer. Every 5 waves could be a boss wave. Imagine a boss wave where it's three Praetorian Aliens and nothing else. Or three Drone aliens with three Warrior aliens.
  • Many, many more horde mode maps and more turret maps. Maybe the devs can grab different sections from the campaign? Potentially, allow players to set up a base in different points of the map like in Garden Warfare.
  • Four player horde maps. I'd actually love if the game was four players in general, but I know the three player system is very specific with how the maps are designed. But I imagine four players in horde mode would work fine.
  • More to do in the HUB area. There's not much going on, even some NPCs walking around and interacting with each other in different areas with dialogue could be great to add more atmosphere. Perhaps a shooting range mini-game with a capsule machine or a reward system of some type like in RE4:R. Or five finger fillet.

If we see a few of these implemented in a sequel or update, I'll struggle to put the game down. I'm hoping to mod the game a little so I can make some of the lighter changes but I can't find the unpacking tools. If anyone knows where I can find the tools, reach me please.

As it stands, I love this game. It's clear the devs themselves clearly love the 1986 film.

I still remember looking for and watching all the coverage i could leading up to the release of the game. I was even fortunate enough to play the "Mars Core" portion of the game early at QuakeCon. I couldn't wait for it to release.

The game is good, really good. But i wouldn't call it a masterpiece.



Let's start with the base game. There's an overabundance of third person cutscenes, which in my opinion feel out of place. It just feels forced as a means to let you see your custom Slayer skin in action, nothing more. The cinematography isn't anything special to justify this either, and the best cutscenes are in first person. That one moment in the initial reveal of the game where the Slayer steps on Phobos is such a masterfully executed scene, all in first person. It gave the Slayer a powerful presence by conveying how much fear he strikes into everyone. Unfortunately, they over-convey this in the final game, which overall hurts the gravity of his presence and feels like fan service. The game doesn't think once or twice is enough and overdoes it as if no one understood the first time the Slayer is dangerous - this principal of overdoing certain ideas is felt throughout the game. The UAC spokesperson for example, functions as a representation of companies with no remorse for real people, and it works to good effect. Eventually, the dialogue dwindles into a gimmick. It just doesn't hold back. The story of the campaign itself, i don't really care for. I've tried to, but as with 2016 it loses my attention over time. This doesn't bother me at all, as long as i know i'm here to rip and tear, and nothing silly happens.

This game tries really hard to realise its gameplay mechanics in every way it can. Something i've rarely seen in any game. Each and every thing is meant to have its place in the game, with one infamous culprit known as the chainsaw. The chainsaw is intended as a means to replenish your ammo, which you have to do very often when you first start the game. I know it annoyed many people, but i personally didn't mind it. Why? The small ammo amount acted as a means to push players to use their arsenal to their full, instead of sticking to their favourite weapon - something i was guilty of in 2016. In other words, the game says "f you play this game our way and use all the weapons", and to be honest it's better that way. I suggest learning to weapon-switch on the fly instead of relying on the weapon wheel, it's incredibly satisfying if you let the game pull you out of your comfort zone of sticking to a few weapons. It's just a shame the chainsaw animation is as repetitive as it is, even against the heavy demons.

There's also the platforming sections, some people hate these parts. I don't see why. The platforming sections help you understand how to manoeuvre better in the air, which comes in handy during combat.

To summarise combat mechanics, you have your basic weapons, flame belch for armor drops, glory kills for health, bombs and blood punch for some space, BFG for even more space, the freeze grenade is rather multifunctional, and of course there's the double jump and double dash for manoeuvrability. It's all really simple and you constantly rotate between everything, it's just a lot to juggle and requires your full attention as you go up against many types of demons with different weaknesses to tackle. It works to great effect overall, forcing you to be strategic and process everything that's happening around you constantly.

Now, on to something i genuinely despise. The bosses - referring to the main bosses here, no recurring mini-bosses such as the Marauders. This is one area where the 2016 game blows Eternal out of the water. This is where the approach to the combat mechanics falls apart for me. As a side effect of the small ammo management and lack of an infinite ammo weapon (such as the pistol in 2016), you're stuck fighting bullet sponge bosses while you constantly refill your ammo. There was still a simple solution to this - have your bosses drop ammo after taking certain amounts of damage. Instead, this game wanted to lean heavily into its combat mechanics and didn't see another way about it. I really liked 2016's bosses, and wanted more of it. A personal fight with you and the boss, a vastly unique enemy type that will test you differently and more intensely. Unfortunately, Eternal's approach is "run around and chainsaw a grunt, shoot boss, repeat". That's not fun at all, i really wanted to like the few bosses we get here but i just couldn't.

Everything else about the base game is good. The level design, the soundtrack, the enemy designs. I really love the Mars Core mission in particular, with Super Gores Nest coming second. The level design is a huge improvement over 2016, where nothing about the levels stood out to me and there was no variety. The addition of the grappling hook for the Super Shotgun is also really nice. I even like going up against the Marauders, though they could be handled better. It seems to be impossible to avoid taking any sort of damage from them, even if you maintain the right distance. I wish there were more master levels, it's been more than a year, but only four master levels - two of them feature a classic mode which lets you start the level with just the combat shotgun, you re-unlock the rest of your weapons as you navigate through the level. It's a really fun mode, just a shame it's only available for two levels. The replayability could be far better with more master levels. Also, fix the damn customisation options. It's annoying to have a demon skin i can't apply for the campaign, and i don't care for Battlemode at all.

Eventually, the first two story expansions dropped and i decided just recently to finally play through them. Just a few more hours worth of missions. Should be good, surely? Wrong. Level design was straight up boring to me in the first expansion, being a chore to push through a mission. And of course there's the Spirits, a horribly executed enemy. Remember how i said the game likes to overdo certain things? Well the Spirits are new enemies that take it way too far to the point of being super obnoxious. Let's see, they possess demons and make them around three times tougher than before, as well being much faster. The weak points of the possessed demon are removed completely. They cause a huge imbalance in the expansion's difficulty as they don't constantly appear. Oh, and you're required to use a rather boring weapon mod with enough ammo reserved to kill a spirit once you've forced it out of a demon, or it will possess another demon. So, what's good about Spirits exactly? They throw any demon's weakness out of the window, and then you have to use a dull weapon mod on them to kill them. It's very boring design. Oh right, and the final boss in the first expansion is somehow worse than any of the bosses in the base game.

As for part two of the expansion, i actually enjoyed it - awkward writing aside. Level design was better, and Spirits were mostly replaced with a better enemy: the Screechers. These are harmless zombies until you kill one of them, which causes them to lift the stats of demons around them. That's basically it. It doesn't overdo it while still managing to push the stakes in battle. The other new enemies were also fun. I can see others finding them annoying but i didn't mind them and i especially liked the Armoured Barons. The final boss was far better than any other boss in the game for me. It might've been a beefed up Marauder, but it was at least more of an actual boss for once, just a poorly written one.



I really hope they fix the boss design in the next game, and ideally don't "overdo" any new ideas they have - seriously, know when to hold back. Otherwise, i'm looking forward to the next game.

I usually don't have time to write reviews, but i woke up really early and couldn't fall back to sleep. Needed something to do :D

They actually tried to make a decent Ben 10 game this time. What?

We have an attempt at an open world for once. Could do with more polish, but it's still fun to traverse and bounce (literally) around in. There's only six aliens, so the name is a bit of a lie - and Kevin re-skins don't count. It could do with more combos per alien too. Otherwise i'd call it a good game, mainly saved by the fact that they did my boy Diamondhead some justice. Also, Rath is in it, whatever.

I'd call this the best Ben 10 game there has been, but that isn't saying much since every Ben 10 game has had a low budget and usually lacked Diamondhead.

I wish the combat was more fleshed out. Especially for Diamondhead, since he's the only alien that truly matters and is the clear selling point of this game. But you only get like five unique moves for an alien capable of probably hundreds. I really want to feel like i'm Diamondhead for once. This game has been the closest i've felt to such a state, yet still miles from it.



Anyone not fond of Ben 10 (incl. pre-reboot) probably won't enjoy this. If your favourite alien is in this roster and the game's on sale and you have time to waste, then it's worth picking up. If i was a kid when this dropped, i know i would've poured loads of hours into this.

This review comes from someone who used to love the show as a kid, and still holds a bit of nostalgia. I've also played almost every major Ben 10 game (excluding omniverse 2) - all of which i thought were on the poor side provided the potential. Yes, i'm aware this game is made directly for kids, despite that being the case its a really weak game. Ben 10 has also been around for almost 12 years now, and has bizarrely gotten more childish over the past few years.

Can someone PLEASE make a large scale Ben 10 RPG? Every single Ben 10 game has been made to milk money from the merchandise, rather than to attract the gaming audience and make the show bigger in the process. There's a lot that's possible with the huge number of aliens that were in the previous Ben 10 series. So much potential with this IP that's going unrealized.

Add in around 30+ aliens with their own set of unique moves. More aliens could be added over time with updates. Not every player has to be Ben either, you can create your own character and the story/premise could be something along the lines of:

'The Omnitrix has been made available for human kind. Factions and Omnitrix variants are available for anyone to choose from, each yielding their own advantages and disadvantages. Factions are at war with one another, and several species wage war against humans for the power of the Omnitrix. Fight your battle and uncover the secrets behind this new order.'

Make it difficult and rewarding to unlock certain aliens, similar to unlocking Pokemon. Doesn't have to be a linear single player game either, it could be a large open world with many hidden bosses and a multiplayer mode. Battling other players with your unlocked aliens, changing aliens during a battle to best the other player would be amazing. Add a ton of variation to the world too. Good graphics would also be welcome, we're in 2017 now. Get some inspiration from PlatinumGames on how to do good combat. Even Black Desert Online is a good game to refer to and learn from. Yes, i'm aware making combat fun and challenging is a highly difficult task for anyone (as well as designing lots of playable aliens). It's far from impossible though, and it takes effort and work to make a game good. The ability to change into different aliens with great abilities should be a magnificent thing to be able to do. Make each alien understood, with the right moveset that compliments each and every one. You can also make Vilgax a super hard boss fight that almost no one can complete due to the immense, yet structured difficulty. Beating him would allow you to unlock one ultimate version for any of your aliens, or something. Still needs a good rewarding system after all, perhaps a few veteran level bosses that allow you to unlock ultimates or extra moves? Of course, maybe a special super secret boss where you can fight Ben 10 himself. You should even be able to surf through different places, like the null void where you can fight endless swarms of massive creatures, perhaps using a wave mode and leaderboards. You can even team up with other players for team based battles. I'm aware its dangerous to dream for this, but hope the right people hear my voice.

Referring now to this newly released game, each alien deserves the right treatment. Not just some quick ultimate move that literally does the same job for all aliens. Absolutely no effort was put into this Ben 10 game. The only plus i can give this is that they finally added some of the original 10 in a video-game (sort of). This is still a slightly different 10 aliens compared to the 10 from the original series. However, its made pointless playing as more than one alien regardless, when almost everyone is the same. All you do is hit, counter, hit hit, counter and special. Then you unlock your ultimate move every once in a while which is also boring after the first couple of times per alien. There's no gameplay narrative present either, you just progress through the areas and fight enemies. No puzzles or anything else. The only thing available besides combat is that you require certain aliens to get to certain places, and all it takes to do that is changing aliens and pressing the required button. It's fine if you want to stick to just combat in a game like this, but not when its the same repeated groups of enemies and the combat is, once again repetitive.

This game is only 2.5gb in size, and that makes sense because of the lack of variation almost anywhere you look, including level design. I've played the first four levels, but got way too bored to complete the game. Every alien repeats their own attack move. No mixing up light and hard attacks for unique combos. Just simple quick attacks that are repeated constantly. Each alien wears out their welcome in a matter of seconds. You also get the same repeated dialogue from literally everyone. Even Gwen and Max repeat the same dialogue unless its a really quick cutscene to push the levels forward. This is a game you could actually speedrun when you've first started it.

For those wondering about optimization: this game runs fine at 4k on a GTX 970. You do need to cap the frame rate at 60 however, or you'll get glitches. This is evident when using Fourarms special attack. There's no v-sync option available, so you'll have to use your graphics card's control panel. No two player mode included. K+m and controller both work fine, although technically mouse is never used. I have experienced a crash but might not be game related.

Seriously, to the producers of the game, don't tier towards just the audience of the show. Target gamers as your audience, and many would pay full price for a game that actually is fun. Hope this gets through to someone that will listen. I ultimately had to refund this game, for anyone £25 is way too much. I'm not surprised if the publishers aren't concerned about the sales. The lack of effort put into this game is so small they'd probably still profit if this game sold for £1. Looks like only a team of 4 (excluding voice actors) was needed for this game at most. I know this isn't the truth, but again that's how weak this game is. The show needs to be fixed too. There are many adults and teens, not just kids who'd still watch the show if it were continued properly from Ultimate Alien. The showrunners just had to narrow the audience didn't they. They've screwed themselves over in the process.

I'll start with the graphics and performance. I have an i5 3550 @3.5ghz and a GTX 970 at 1531mhz/2020mhz just to note. Game has great graphics of course. Even on a 240p image, the game can look stunning. FXAA and SMAA in this game are horrid though. I would highly recommend using Reshade SMAA as the default SMAA leaves a lot of jaggies unchanged. I don't like FXAA as it feels like a blur filter (it basically is though). A temporal aa solution would have been welcome. Temporal aa may produce a lot of softness but its great for eliminating jaggies, and this game is full of them. Consider downsampling or using SSAA if your card is high end. My i5 proves to be a bottleneck in the village level. I get drops to around 50fps, even with foliage and level of detail set to medium. My 970 holds up really well though. Only two options make the card struggle, which is VXAO and the very high texture settings. The max texture settings does require more than 4gb of vram, and VXAO isn't available in the dx12 version of the game but isn't really worth its performance cost anyway unless you can handle it. Dx12 is pretty pointless on nvidia cards, may be good on amd cards as amd has better dx12 support. The only thing i find graphically disappointing besides the anti aliasing solutions is the shadow quality. Even the maximum shadow quality with maximum sun soft shadows setting still shows a bit of shimmering in the shadows. The game can also be a bit of a hit and miss with its global illumination method. I won't get too into detail about the graphics, but it's definitely still impressive seeing what my graphics card is capable of. End of graphics discussion.

I was highly anticipating this game. I loved the predecessor to this, and the uncharted series (which this is similar to). Right from the beginning, the game was great. Lots of variety in its locations and a big scope. Unfortunately, the game lost its grand scale after around 30 minutes into the game. I was expecting constant location variety as you get with uncharted, but this game wanted a free-roam element available as it did with the first game. I shouldn't expect constant location variety of course, this isn't uncharted. It's just when the first levels are very varied compared to the rest of the game, it can feel a bit disappointing. It's no rushed game by any means.

Story also failed to hook me properly. Was interesting at first but quickly became quite basic, with characters conveniently and cheaply tying into the story. Character development was okay, though i barely rooted for supporting characters. I also rarely felt the stakes in this game, unless some animal was trying to attack me. A bear chasing you is pretty scary. The story is something that could've been highly improved. Crystal Dynamics need to hire a much better writer for the sequel.

Gameplay wise, i was a little disorientated at first as it was very different from the first. It's different in a great way though. The crafting mechanic and (sometimes) optional stealth is great. The previous Tomb Raider allowed for stealth in some cases but only by a small amount and not to the level this game allows. The options available at campfires have also been improved, with more outfits available and more upgrades.

After the first playthrough of the game, i did some of them expedition challenges and earned credits to get card packs. Enjoyment didn't last long at all though. The game just wasn't my cup of tea at the time.

20 year celebration DLC got announced some time after. I decided to buy the season pass before its release, was only around i think £12 at cdkeys. Previously released DLC was available to play, so i obviously played through them. Loved the zombie type and endurance mode add-ons. Didn't like the babaya-yegaa thingy. Honestly i would slap myself if i had brought that babaya thing on its own. £7 at the time down the drain for mediocre DLC lasting around an hour. Decided to replay the game though and actually realised i really like the gameplay. Sure the story and lack of variety was disappointing at first, but focusing on gameplay and DLC adding variety made things better.

20 year celebration DLC released, was intent on playing the Extreme Survivor mode. Extreme Survivor i think is no different from Survivor mode, except the only checkpoints being campfires. It was a satisfying and challenging mode to play, but not challenging enough. Yes i may have died around 30 times but i also finished the story within 9 hours in that mode. Then again i wasn't hardcore enough to also explore dangerous tombs during the story. Maybe playing with a controller would make extreme survivor mode highly difficult. Endurance co-op mode hasn't been good for me. Haven't been able to get into a server, i'll try on a more busy day but it definitely doesn't have much demand.

I still prefer the main setting of the previous Tomb Raider, being set on that Island. In some ways, the previous game manages to feel more epic and big. Not too sure why that is maybe that's just me or the island setting or the fact that this game was a timed exclusive which hurt its reputation. This is still a great game though, with some of the best DLC to any game. I just wish it had a better story. Do consider buying the game bundled with its DLC if you like this game type.
