Murdered: Soul Suspect is a diamond in the rough.

A great game marred by questionable gameplay design and plenty of bugs, but ultimately worth your time if you're in the mood for a crime thriller with a paranormal flair.

I can still vividly remember my first encounter with a zombie in the Spencer Mansion. I was six years old, and the sight of the dismembered head of poor Bravo team member Kenneth dropping to the floor, and the vacant stare and hungry moan of the walking dead assailant have been permanently etched into my mind. Resident Evil was my first encounter with the survival horror genre, and it is an experience that set the bar for the others to come.

Five years later Capcom remade their seminal title on the Gamecube with improved voice acting (no more awkward “Jill Sandwich”es), new puzzles, and some of the most beautiful graphics of that generation. The fear was reborn, and I once again ventured into the Spencer estate with an uneasy feeling and a bittersweet pang of terror.

Twelve years and four titles later, Capcom has once again dusted off the original Resident Evil, polishing and revamping it for a newer generation of fans and consoles. Though this is one of the most integral titles in the survival horror genre, does Resident Evil REmastered hold up after all these years?

First off, let’s address some of the new features. The game sports a full HD retooling, including a 16:9 aspect ratio and a new control scheme as an alternative to the classic (though frustrating) tank controls of yore. Resident Evil has stood up surprisingly well despite it being a twelve year old Gamecube title, the graphics that wowed and floored audiences so long ago still seem relatively up to par by todays standards thanks to the HD upgrade most of the models and characters have received. However, it seems that in quite a few spots Capcom merely stretched the pre-rendered background and applied a grimy filter in place of enhancing the source files, causing some of the more polished and enhanced item and character models to stand out awkwardly, and can sometimes be very jarring in a few places.

In addition to a graphical upgrade, the frame-rate has also been upgraded from 30 to 60 fps, making the game much more fluid and terrifying, as classic monsters now have a much more lifelike quality to them. I don’t know if the animations were re-tooled or not, but everything from the shambling undead, to the reptilian hunters, to the abominable Plant 42 seem much more vibrant and alive. This in conjunction with the 16:9 aspect ratio upgrade elevate the game to a new level of cinematic immersion and authentic terror.

The game still controls very well after being ported to four systems, including the PC, though the new controls might seem jarring to those who are used to the classic tank controls. Its clear that the game was built for relative movement controls, but those who are part of the newer generation of gamers may find these controls to be more intuitive. Thankfully the new movement controls along with the enhanced aspect ratio and FPS upgrade can be toggled at any time within the game, allowing for novices and veterans to optimize their experiences however they see fit.

Resident Evil REmastered is a fantastic re-release and polish of what is arguably the best remake and survival horror game ever. Though the game falters in some places with blemished background textures and clunky new controls for newcomers, but the game as a whole is still just as beautiful and ghastly as ever, and whether you’re new to the series or a veteran zombie dodger, for $20 Resident Evil REmastered is worth your time.
