Some of Andrew Hulshult's best work- a true masterpiece in soundtrack design.

A Far Cry game but without a voiced protagonist (therefore no character development), uninteresting antagonists and a boring map. This game also has significantly less outposts than Far Cry 3 and 4 for some reason- probably because Ubisoft prioritized fishing or hunting more than the classic Far Cry formula.

Just save your money for when Far Cry 6 releases, that game looks so much more promising.

EDIT: Far Cry 6 released (albeit, a while ago now) and it was worse than this game. The voiced protagonist was a nice touch, but overall, the game felt a bit less charming than Far Cry 5. I have come to the conclusion that having a mute/voiceless protagonist isn't that much of a deal-breaker for me. Far Cry 5 has an amazing theme and setting- oh how beautiful the state of Montana is. So, I have changed my review from negative to positive, as I would recommend it if you are interested in some Far Cry action in the United States, a first for the series.

Or just buy Far Cry 2/3/4, any of those are excellent choices.

What is Blood?
Blood is a fast-paced FPS developed by Monolith Productions and published by GT Interactive in 1997. "Blood: Fresh Supply" is the official remaster released in 2019. The important difference is that Fresh Supply runs on the Kex Engine instead of the original Build Engine, while additionally adding quality of life improvements and making the game more friendly to modern hardware than DOSBox.

The (not so important) story:
According to the manual, cutscenes and wiki, you play as the merciless gunslinger known as Caleb, who was born in western Texas in 1847. By the time Caleb is 24, he meets Ophelia Price whose husband wanted to rescind his membership to the Cabal (Cult of Tchernobog). In return, the cultists set fire to Ophelia's house, killing her child and husband. Later, Ophelia introduces Caleb to the Cabal and rose together alongside two others, Gabriel and Ishmael to the highest ranks called "The Chosen" for the next 57 years. In 1928, Tchernobog decides to betray the Chosen for some undisclosed reason, so he sends his demonic creatures to attack them. A giant spider called Shial (the Queen of Spiders), comes out of nowhere and kidnaps Gabriel. Cerberus, a two-headed dog (unlike it's Greek mythology counterpart which has three heads) and two other Hell Hounds kill Ishmael. A giant stone gargoyle named Cheogh also comes out of nowhere and snatches Ophelia and flies away. After all of that, Tchernobog kills Caleb... Caleb is then resurrected from a shallow grave to go on a killing rampage- targeting Cabal cultists, demonic creatures and random bystanders. This is where the game begins!

The good things:
1) The guns. The guns are phenomenal and unique, many of which are not seen in other games, which consist of:
• Pitchfork
• Flare Gun
• Sawed-Off Shotgun: This shotgun is awesome. I think I prefer it over DOOM II's Super Shotgun just from how powerful and much faster the reloading is.
• Thompson: Also called the Tommy Gun.
• Aerosol Can: Combined with a lighter to replicate a flame thrower.
• Napalm Launcher
• Dynamite Bundle: Throwable explosives are your best friend in this game. As CV-11 once said, "Don't event attempt to play through on a medium or high skill without learning how to toss dynamite."
• Proximity Detonator
• Remote Detonator
• Life Leech: A skull on a staff.
• Voodoo Doll
• Tesla Cannon
2) The gameplay is astounding in Blood. The accompanying enemy roster alongside your deadly arsenal of firearms creates an extremely fast-paced FPS game. Compared to DOOM and Quake, Blood is just on a whole different level of skill, pacing and difficulty- mostly due to the fact that the reaction time of the hit-scanners on higher difficulties are ridiculous.
3) There's a decent amount and variety of enemies to kill. There's even variations of specific enemies, such as the cultists. Some cultists have different weapons, varied health points and different colored robes to identify which one is which.
4) The bosses in Blood are great. Although the final boss in Episode 4 is a bit too easy compared to other bosses like Episode 3's or arguably even Episode 1's.
5) Graphics are good. I don't care too much about graphics but I really enjoyed Blood's texture-work and art direction. Enemy sprites are also great (besides the Phantasm).
6) Continuation from #5, but this game is very atmospheric. Monolith Productions perfected the sounds, music, textures, lighting, locations and environments to the point where (mostly) every single level is unique and different.
7) Level design is superb for the most part. There are some instances where it's not superb.
8) Stephan Weyte did a fantastic job at voicing Caleb. Caleb's lines can be sarcastic and badass, funny and edgy. Not to mention the numerous references to pop culture such as to certain movies, books and other media. Here are some of my favorite quotes!:
• "Single white female..."
• "Cujo?"
9) This release comes with two soundtracks- the MIDI version and CD version. I personally prefer the MIDI soundtrack, but CD is more atmospheric.
10) There are six man episodes, which consist of:
• E1 - THE WAY OF ALL FLESH
• E2 - EVEN DEATH MAY DIE
• E3 - FAREWELL TO ARMS
• E4 - DEAD RECKONING
• E5 - CRYPTIC PASSAGE
• E6 - POST MORTEM
11) Each episode has a secret level.
12) It's compatible with fan-made addons such as Death Wish. I personally also use SmoothBlood.
13) Includes additional graphical features, such as antialiasing, ambient occlusion, v-sync, etc.
14) Includes an additional difficulty setting, "Made To Order". This difficulty is used for customizing specific variables within the game, such as the amount of enemy spawns.
15) This port has true 3D aiming! This means that your screen will no longer distort while looking vertically.
16) There's multiplayer, and I'm pretty sure you can play the main campaign in co-op mode.

The bad things:
1) Atari. Atari is a horrible publisher and owner. For some reason, Atari won't allow Nightdive Studios (developers of Fresh Supply) to update and patch the game anymore. That means the bugs that are present in the game right now are never going to be patched out unless Atari explicitly gives permission to allow the developers to do so. Which they have not.
2) Another reason why Atari sucks, they removed the original Blood from Steam and GOG. Why??? Luckily I have the original Blood on steam as well but I feel bad for everybody else who wants to use the original files for another source port like nBlood. (Yes, I'm aware you can also use Fresh Supply's files for source ports, but I've experienced certain bugs since the cutscenes are in ".ogv" format instead of ".smk + .wav").
3) Fresh Supply doesn't include a digital manual. :(
4) Fresh Supply isn't compatible with VirutalMIDISynth and forces you to use their soundfont.
5) Quicksaving in Cryptic Passage takes substantially longer than the other five episodes.
6) Minimal HUD is in 4:3, even when using a 16:9 resolution.
7) Tchernobog sounds like a 14 year old using a voice changer.
8) People who owned the original Blood on steam had to buy Blood again (but with a $5 discount :)).
9) THE WATER SUCKS! Blood would be a million times better if it didn't have those horrendous water levels and sections, my god. Playing on Extra Crispy is a pain in the ass when hit-scanners just decide to take a nice swim in the water and mercilessly annihilate Caleb with perfect accuracy. It wouldn't be too bad if swimming was less jank and the cultists actually had worse accuracy in water than on land... But I do play on the hardest difficulty so I am kind of asking for it so...

The ugly thing:
DO NOT BUY FRESH SUPPLY IF YOU ARE USING INTEL'S INTEGRATED GRAPHICS! Some Intel chipsets are not compatible with OpenGL 3.2+, or just not compatible with the game in general. I've seen some people's games look like this from this issue: https://i.imgur.com/gsYuwbu.png. If you really want to play Blood legally, I recommend just buying Fresh Supply and then using it's content for another source port, like my personal favorite, nBlood[lerppu.net] or BuildGDX[m210.duke4.net] or even Raze[github.com] which is a source port based on GZDoom's user interface.

In conclusion:
Blood is one of my favorite games of all time, and Fresh Supply is the way to play it now. The gameplay is on point, and Blood is a really good challenge for experienced FPS players, especially on the difficulty Well Done or Extra Crispy. This game took me maybe around 10-20 hours to 100% all achievements and play through six episodes so it's definitely worth your time. Not to mention that there are other amazing addons such as Death Wish which is basically canonically the real Blood 2.

HL:S is littered with glitches and bugs without patches, so make sure you install "Half-Life: Source Fixed" found on Mod DB.
