I like the concept of the game. Its a nice simple game, its fun to travel and upgrade and maintain the car. But its just too buggy.
In my 3hrs of playtime i have had 3 game-breaking bugs. Twice the AI traffic blocked the road so i couldn't progress and once i got stuck behind a door. Because of these i had to restart the game which took me back to the last save, back to the previous checkpoint. I wanted to get past it but after the 3rd bug taking away my progress I'm just going to request a refund.
Surprised that the game has been out for soo long yet still has such serious issues.

Like a mobile clicker- The main issue with this game is that if you stripped it of the nice graphics it could essentially be a mobile game.
The main gameplay elements of this game work using timers. To research more dinosaurs you have to send expeditions to dig up fossils with a timer determining when they will get back; these fossils are then researched in a fossil center which takes time; you can research additional traits for your dinosaurs which increases their rating or gives other useful traits (again on a timer); dinosaurs then take time to hatch; feeders will run out of food and you must manually send a ranger team to restock them (this gets annoying when you realize its press r, set task, click on feeder then press escape); dinosaurs can get ill and need medication (which must first be researched and is performed in the same way as restocking feeders); you will have a slow start and need to increase cashflow by slowly getting more impressive dinosaurs and can end up waiting for your funds to slowly tick up so you can reach your next goal. All of this means that you are constantly waiting for things to finish so that you can grow your park.
Some aspects don’t rely on timers, such as the missions and dinosaur comfort. Dinosaurs comfort however is easy to keep in check, the main issues will come when you get greedy and build enclosures too small or put too many dinosaurs in one enclosure. Low comfort means dinos try to break out and you must react by tranquilizing. Missions act to give the player a goal, just something to work on when you don’t have your own tasks. These don’t really add much to the game, it is tempting to discomfort dinosaurs to create some chaos as once dinos are in a stable pen there isn’t any reason for them to escape.
Along with the dinosaurs you have to manage other guest needs such as capacity, drink, food and fun. This only adds another slightly annoying element. I don’t care about giving them food, we have dinosaurs, id starve to go and see that. This takes up room in your park with blocks of buildings so there is less room to keep dinosaurs. Furthermore, when placed you have to set the individual sale price for the item each shop will sell. This should make you feel more involved with the park but it is really just annoying, especially when you forget to set the price and the shop is losing you money (another anchor to progression).
Progression reset- There comes a point where your park is as you want it and you are constantly having to restock feeders, cure ill dinos and hatch more to replace dead ones. When you have completed all the research on one island you must move on to the next one to unlock the next dinosaurs/diseases/genetic enhancements. This acts as a reset to your funds and only slows you down. You go from having a large excess of funds that you can’t spend fast enough with 50 dinosaurs to one dino and no money. You then have to wait for this money to come in slowly so that you can ramp up your income and reach your next goals faster. This just adds time and I found myself leaving my computer to watch TV (as I would with other builder type games) until I had enough funds to progress. Later on in the game, there is a flipping point where you can find yourself with no time to expand as you are having to deal with issues (feeder resupplies, close shelters for storms, ill dinos), making it frustrating to progress.
The islands present unique challenges such as one starts with negative money and one gives very little room for enclosures. However, these just frustrate as they slow you further and mean you can’t build the park you want.
Realism- In a game with dinosaur theme parks, you can’t complain too much about realism. However, a real plot hole for me was that the first dinosaur you start with doesn’t pull in crowds of millions. This makes sense for the game as without this there would be no need to research so it is not a real concern, just annoying when your park is empty but you have a freaking dinosaur!
DLC fears- I have put this here as I bought the Deluxe edition, adding an extra 5 dinosaurs for about £5 (pretty pricey). The game has great potential for DLC; more dinosaurs, more guest facilities or more genetic research, even a new island. However, my fears are that the game is already expensive at £45 and I could see a vast amount of DLC being released which would only extend the games lifetime and profit. The action to have extra DLC on release is already pretty greedy, why couldn’t those 5 dinosaurs be in the game free? I hope that any expansions are given freely, or at the least at a lower price than £1 a dinosaur.
Dinosaurs are cool- One of the redeeming features of this game is that dinosaurs are cool. They are all wonderfully animated and textured, giving them real character. However, if the game didn’t have the 3D graphics it could easily be a mobile game. Once you have created one of every dinosaur, seen their big reveal and all their animations, they become commodified as you then have to focus on creating a stable park while battling against the annoying gameplay.
Creating unique moments- The one thing this game does really well is allowing players to create their own unique moments. By allowing player to name every building and dinosaur it means that you can create YOUR park, a park that is different from anyone else’s and that you have a connection with. You can take photos of dinosaurs from the jeeps and this eye level interaction allows a better connection to the dinosaurs. This is entirely dependent on the players ability to play games in this way and if you were going to buy this game it is essential that you are the type of player who will name everything in your park.
