”CHESTER LITTLE…!!"
https://gtm.you1.cn/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2787594002

Here's The Thing:
You are some tyke who’s just been involved in an accident. What kind? Enough to traumatize and sink you into the stuff of nightmares… But is it really just that?? Uncover the fears that may have once plagued you too- YES YOU~

[+] PROS;

:) BAD TIME FOR A TOILET BREAK~
If I had to put it as best I could, it’s Leenie Boog's approach of incorporating “minigames” so as to keep things varied and that anything pretty much goes! However, whereas the former is well lit- here you are submerged in total, looming darkness…

You could be thrust into a stealth segment suddenly while clutching your stuffed doll Chester, or forced to pay attention as something breathes heavily towards you and all you can do is close your eyes till it passes. If it ever does! And yadda-yadda-yadda. I won’t spoil all the surprises, just bear in mind to watch yourself in the dark so other things won’t!

This is an obtusely short game of about 1 hour with two endings, depending on how well you were able to put up with the creature. However, to nab the canonical “good” end, it requires practice for the margin of error is extreme. Or at least made to seem that way~

TIPS:
1) There is no penalty for shutting your eyes in minigame number 2!

:) NOSFERA-TOO SCARY!
There’s a visceral yet real quality to the unsettling visuals. Nothing outstanding really if not merely ordinary, to put it bluntly. It’s almost like your standard residential bathed in paralyzing dimness. The littering of night lamps should be coaxing but not when they come off as safeguards! That said, the house itself is moldable as that of a child’s stretchy and wild imagination.

The main antagonist is a nasty, gnarly and hunchbacked being. Something out of a creature flick in the monster era of film… I wasn’t able to get a proper look, and certainly not for a lack of trying. Constantly masked by the shadows and the imperativeness of the scenarios, to which they do its bidding. The beady and feral eyes; two spotlights that lock onto you~

:) NO BUNNY BUSINESS?
Conjure up the haunting air and confrontational themes to A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). The child-centric focus as well as appearance and representation of The Babadook (2014). With a mild glance of the “Gatherers” from Amnesia. Then finally, that gives you Chester- inspired by the dev’s own fears at that delicate age! Not terribly unique, nor was it ever meant to be.

While it’s true that the story pretty much assumes a back seat apart from the opening scene and ending revelation. But I’d like to think that the events during which the game takes place and the rest are arguably left open for analysis. Each time you’re caught signifies the start of a recurring nightmare, which would explain a lot~

:) IT’S NOT THE DARKNESS THAT KILLS…
Going to the toilet in the dead of night is probably the most dreadful period, what with your bladder being at capacity and all. Where the slightest tug could release the floodgates. Be it the thoughts that begin to run amok at every silhouette or unidentified noise… The burning feeling of an unwanted presence staring intensely at the back of your head, maybe even tailing from right behind you.

It’s precisely the revisiting of commonly irrational fears which are anything but really, at that period of life that get depicted so ardently here. The highlight here? Scared by the dark. Being stripped of one’s sensory familiarity leaves you helpless, when really, they may simply be as you remember them or last saw. That doesn’t stop you though. For it is not what is actually there that matters, rather what else COULD be.

Also, when is it a nightmare and when is it reality? I still have vague recollections of encounters where I can’t tell apart the two. Reinforced by a scary show on the tv, a bedroom story for misbehaving children or just the sight of a stranger who- for all you know is harmless. But more than enough to seize you in fear, break down in tears or let out a yelp~

[-] CONS;

:( I KID YOU NOT…
Let’s get one thing straight- darkness alone doesn’t make things any scarier. It is beyond annoying, migraine-inducing to not be able to see shi*. And before you say- what about Nyctophobia? You didn’t let me finish… Fortunately, although it is a practitioner of that “darkness is everything” principle, it manages to be successful to some extent at the cost of crippling other fears which could have been explored.

As such, with no compromises say to be able to tweak the brightness department, not without jeopardizing the atmosphere anyway; it makes exploring an ordeal in itself. When you recall titles such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent or the ever-timeless Silent Hill which both were as black as night. Was visibility sacrificed at any one time? The answer may surprise you, but not really~

:( GETTING IT OFF MY CHEST-ER… LIKE RIGHT NOW!
As I’ve stated, the story is left mostly to interpretation but I still would have preferred some answers and context behind the fears. At best, I can only make inferences- at worst, I grasp at straws… while already in the dark!? Ultimately however, getting to the good ending proves to be the greatest stressful tribulation. One that is not only hard “hard” but also in the sense that players won’t stay invested in due to the unrelenting criteria.

A single death takes you back to the checkpoint but will void your current shot. So, you will have to revert to a clean slate and practice until you can handle no more. On the one hand, I like that it takes work to power through and banish your nightmares, and technically I am ready for that make-or-break attempt. But on the other, after everything… I don’t think it will change my reception of it when you couple it with the save system or rather lack thereof~

BUGS:
x AI in minigame 1 ended up patrolling at the spawning area despite them not being able to reach you. Supposedly.
x Going up the steps normally is impossible. But if done in reverse, it is fine.

NITPICKS:
~ Labels on some light switches are inconsistent. Some appear as icons and others in text. Then never again to be seen.
~ Optimization could use some work. Also, more adjustable graphic settings instead of just presets.

"- GIMME CHESTER LITTLE BIT MORE~"

Last Words?
Diabolically playful in stirring things up and still appear terrorizing. It sure could ease up on the darkness and rigid rules… But this indie horror is special; creator has to be commended for it~

If you’d like some closure against some child-centered horrors such as those in Among The Sleep, Little Nightmares or Little Terror. If you love a rambunctious alternative to conventional walking simulators and to be caught off guard multiple times. Chester will make for a wonderful company until it goes off on its own~

7.5 / 10

My genuine thanks and love to Luli for the key. What a huge gesture~

@AviaRa I know right. I can't help but feel it was also my fault, maybe I could have fiddled with the contrast some more on me own~

It's puzzling more like XD

Honestly can't see much on those screenshots, lol. So dark.
Interesting how those "steps" work in this geym. Whaz a "puzzle", heh.

@Luli No worries. Thank you for checking it out and agreeing with most of it:WillardMask:

Absolutely, the dev is standup dude, very friendly and has an iron skin. Yes, he has promised to address and be more mindful of these criticisms in future titles. He even showed it already through a quick patch with the notes outlined.

(which I can't wait for, tbh)

Lastly, I knew this would be coming; and I concede- it is a puzzle game however one that is steeped in exploration. Finding direction, key fragments and etc.

So it is a fine line between the two and all things considering, the dev did very well. I can't say I would have done better : 3

Thanks for your thoughtful comments~:infolaptop::MYZDux::AOTS_Teacup:

Thank you for this deep and detailed review buddy! I enormously appreciate! :thecount:

I agree though that other types of fear could have been explored better. This feedback is essential for the dev, he is more than willing to improve his next products in all respects.

Aaah, beautiful review as always, I knew you would not disappoint! I particularly appreciated the reference to Babadook, I think it perfectly captures the essence of the game. I don't agree though with your critic to the excessive darkness. I believe one of the strongest points of this game is the excellent use of darkness. The fact that you couldn't catch a clear glimpse of the monster is intended, the whole game is designed to make you feel confused and uneasy, like... well... a little child who is lost in the dark! Making the game brighter would damage both the atmosphere and the gameplay, which is also fully focused on the darkness. I know it makes the exploration harder, but this game is focused on puzzles and quick thinking rather than on exploration.

Thanks for the great review. To be honest I was a bit scared to read it after your initial paragraph but I was a brave little soldier and carried on.

I don't think I'll be taking a piss in the middle of the night again though. You've ruined that for me and my prostate is only getting larger!

Well done on another well-written review. I have enough nightmares in RL though. :)
