okay, so like i might be a teeny weeny bit biased because i've essentially encased myself in this series since the first few madness combat cartoons on newgrounds but just hear me out.

THIS GAME IS WORTH WAY MORE THAN 22 DOLLARS

[The Gameplay]
the mechanics are flawless! there's something about hitting a giant enemy in the head(GO3LM) with a URINAL that feels so satisfying

the sound design put into making each attack feel visceral is astonishing and the blood and dismemberment compliment it well

the shooting can be fast paced and reckless and can become slow and methodical depending on how you play!

my favorite mechanic would be dual wielding and seeing how these two weapons play together. double katanas? epic
a baseball bat and a pistol? fun! TWO SMGS SPRAYING AT WILL? YOU BETCHA

and thats barely the surface of the fighting mechanics. you have a dodge, a tac bar(basically the stuff you see in movies where the main character just dodges a hail of bullets somehow, really cool!) and a really fun progression in both the story and arena modes.

[The Atmosphere]
The general settings of the missions tend to vary,a dreary city. an arena filmed for the masses
middle of nowhere deserts with scavengers. the decorations and props are used extremely well and would seem believable if the settings were transposed into real life!
the game has one important aspect of it that i would love to talk more about but i'd drain your brain to mush if you had to read it all

The music in this game is astonishing composed by amazing artists such as Locknarr and Cheshyre, the music in this game really gets you into that "i'm gonna beat the ♥♥♥♥ out of everyone here" kind of feeling regardless of setting and tone. a large part of the madness combat videos was it's banger of a music track in them, complimenting the fighting and sometimes syncing with it to create this fluid but chaotic kind of feeling with its mechanics.
i wish i could continue to list every track and setting and how detailed and well put together it is but i've got to move on!

[The Story]
the campaign sheds light on a lot of the things we cant get in the madness combat episodes such as how hank sanford and deimos interact with each other, their personality portrayed by the way they speak, their rapport with each other and fun banter.

while this was around in the videos they were a lot more nuanced, and now there's so much we can explore cause its an interactive experience!
madness combat longtime fans will just more than love it! from an outsider perspective where this is your first time ever coming across the madness combat series,

you dont have to worry as most of the characters can be understood at first glance with their distinctive personalities clothing choices and loadout sets.
the story can be put in a vacuum without needing prior experience in the madness series,

BUT you'll miss out on points where you fangirl over stuff you've noticed in the videos being called back or referenced in the game

[ARENA MODE]
okay so i've never been more addicted to trying to progress in a mode, like ever
the arena mode is simple. you(your own character) progress through a series of missions and gauntlets that increase in difficulty over time to continue an entirely seperate FULLY fleshed out side story(and, yes it is fun)
essentially you start out as a noob, no skills no experience no idea whats going on.

you're sent out to complete missions for another character in the main group of madness characters.
over time when you use your abilities you gain exp from the missions to upgrade them and make you maybe not so garbage

for example you start off with a crummy dodge which is essentially just you bellyflopping about a meter away from your original spot, the more you use that crummy dodge in a fight the more exp you get, allowing you to get a less crummy dodge.

same thing goes for using guns or punching stuff or bonking stuff in the head with a pipe, the percentage of times you've used an ability during a mission translates to the percentage of exp it gets from the mission.
think of it as if you were to use guns alot, you'd get more exp in the gun category but less exp in the melee category.
the fun part is if you NEVER use an ability, lets say unarmed combat, means you'll get zero exp in that category BUT the rest of the abilities get more exp. which is amazing!
need to power level a certain ability cause you want it immediately? just focus on using that the whole mission and ALL the exp goes to that ability, AMAZING!

okay i've used up alot of space on just the leveling of arena mode so ill try and get through the customization fast

you start off with a basic pistol, complete missions and get money to unlock cooler guns which you can upgrade at a station you unlock later in the missions which lets you have all sorts of attachments!

you get throwables that help you in case you run out of ammo, and you can get better melee weapons such as a spiked baseball bat(lucille) or a KNIFE THAT SENDS PEOPLE TO THE SHADOW REALM.

you can cosplay your favorite characters from the madness series with the armor and outfits or make yourself in the
world of madness

there's so much variety in the missions that makes you want to replay them for fun instead of just grinding it for progression
and the mechanics are so fluid that it just goes hand in hand to make something extremely replayable(even more so than its original counterpart)the variety in enemies and the different ways you can tackle them makes each mission such a blast to go through!
another big plus is the squad system, being able to hire and bring with you an array of squad members you can command
and get attached with.(my best mate's name is hermes)

i havent gotten through all of the game yet but i've heard rumors of being able to get a minigun as a weapon! (it's a weapon in the original game which was unobtainable in arena mode)
the references and callbacks just put a smile on my face.

[The BRUHS]
lets talk about the problems with the game none of them dealbreakers but some do get quite annoying.
one of the day one bugs happens to be a glitch where you've killed somebody but they turn invincible while stuck in an animation, forcing you to restart the mission. this has happened to me quite a few times, some during missions where i have to start over completely if i had encountered the glitch.
another one of the problems is how slow some of the fights are with some of the bigger enemies, sometimes making it feel dragged out and boring, constantly kiting the boss and attacking him, taking a couple minutes.
thankfully, thats all the problems, i've encountered. as i continue playing ill add on to this review!

[The Summary]
I give madness project nexus a 9/10!
an overall solid hack and slash game which i've spent 16 hours on in the two days it's been released and have had to pull myself out of it to be able to do other things. a solid game for madness combat fans and a solid game in general
i hope to push this up to a 9.5 as updates and patches come into the game!
(hopefully more dlc for arena mode,i love that mode)
thank you so much for reading this and i hope i've helped make your decision on whether or not this game is for you!

TLDR 9/10 has day one bugs. will be perfect after a bunch of patches. mechanics solid music is great!
if you wanna learn the backstory and fangirl references, i'll help you get started on that!

i really hope some of the stuff in the later videos are in the game!
