Ori and the Blind Forest is an example of how a Metroidvania/Platformer should be made. The artwork is amazing, the sound track matches the game perfectly, then controls are tight and responsive and it contains a plot that makes sense and compels you want to finish it. It doesn’t need weeks to play (10 hours should get you through the game without using a guide), but it can be rushed much quicker- in under 3 if you are very skilled.

I won’t go into the plot, suffice to say it’s a story of loss and sacrifice, and goes about explaining it in a way that doesn’t overwhelm the player, but fleshes out all the characters so you have an understanding of why things are happening.
The environments are well designed and if it’s your first run through or 50th, you can see little additions here and there that still balance out the area after you have picked up certain upgrades. As mentioned the controls are very responsive, you don’t accidently jump off a cliff in this game, but using a controller is a must.

The soundtrack deserves a review just for itself, it’s just that good.

My only gripe with Ori and the Blind Forest is how hard some of the area’s become- we are talking super meat boy spikes of difficulty here. These aren’t gradual build up’s, they spike from relatively easy to stupid hard in one screen. Fortunately, this isn’t often (just enough to keep you wary). If you are hunting the 100% achievement, then this might be an issue for you (unless you like pain).

I really wanted to like this game. I love the alien’s series and have majority of the alien and AVP games, and knowing that this was going to be a part of the alien lore (not just the extended universe) was super pumped when it was announced.

I played it when it first came out, and to be fair I wasn’t overly impressed with the graphics, sound, A.I, or story. I don’t mind playing game with what looks like outdated graphic, if that’s what I’m sold, but having screenshots that don’t match up to anything in game isn’t good, and to be honest I thought the assets that were used in the previous AVP game looked better. There are mods out now that improve most of the above, the missions are still a liner rail shooter with very little change to the setting. It was cool re-visiting Hadley’s hope, but after have a nuke go off underneath it you would expect it to be a crater, not a still mostly intact building. Placing the turrets and fighting of waves of attacking aliens was the highlight of the game, which is disappointing as this is a setting that should have so much more going for it. The reaper that chases you in a mission was a good idea (this is pre alien: isolation) but I thought the chargers and the blind aliens were un-inspired -there is tons of lore out there that goes into details on how these things work, so why make stuff up on the fly which goes against everything that has been released before. Being able to co-op is cool, until you realise that the game is still designed to be played by 1 person, so the difficulty doesn’t ramp up, and the cut scenes still only show 1 player. But at least that turns it into a friendly competition to see who can kill the most. I would say play on the hardest difficulty from the start, it makes it a bit more difficult, but not much.

Multiplayer was a squandered opportunity. The levels and game types are fun and well designed, but the alien’s controls seem janky, they don’t seem to run smooth like you expect them to, and trying to climb surfaces was really difficult unlike previous AVP games. Then there are the marines, who in every match I played understood how to play (eg group together) and a rocking 1 shot rockets that instant death a alien if it get near it. That’s fine if you’re playing the escape maps as there is enough ways into the choke points that you will whittle them down, but in the other maps it tends to lead to a one-sided slaughter (unless you manage to spawn as the bomber or crusher -then your gold).

If you are trying the get the achievements then you are going to need the get a ton of friends to play it with you, as you aren’t going to be able to finish the challenges without them. Multiplayer used to have enough people playing but when I ran through the stasis interrupted DLC it was dead, which makes the above impossible. Customising your marine/alien was fun, but hardly ground breaking.

The stasis interrupted DLC played better and was tougher to go through (tight spaces, lots of aliens) and it explained the beginning of the Aliens 3 movie well. Majority if the gripes I had with the base game are still there, but either it works better, or my disappointment threshold was lowered by the time I played it.

Like I said before, I love the alien series and really want to recommend this game, but just can’t. Maybe pick it up if you love the alien’s series, it’s on super discount, or you don’t like someone and want to gift it to them.

Mad Max throws the player into an unforgiving post-apocalyptic future where everything has gone to $#!&, and only the strong and ruthless survive. After having his car and everything else stolen from him and been left for dead on the side of a road Mad Max falls in with Chumbucket (his mechanic) who points him to his Magnum Opus, which is missing a few parts. From here on in it’s a game of revenge (and upgrading/repairing the car), heavily focusing on vehicular combat and giving anyone who isn’t aligned with Max a good old-fashioned beat down.

The map is broken down into territories which are owned by different factions, which Max can take control of by destroying outposts, settlements, racing, removing mine fields ect. It offers plenty of side missions and things to do and check off, keeping you busy throughout the entire game

I found the controls responsive, and the vehicular combat plays like a less insane version of Carmageddon (which to say make this game lots of fun, especially after you get a few upgrades into the Magnum Opus). While on foot Max feels like a less suited up version of Batman- he has plenty of tools at his disposal, lots of health, and will lay the beatdown on 20 raiders at once (the combat system plays like Batman: Arkham city). Some of the races and trials can get repetitive, but nothing that would induce rage quitting over, and generally lead to nice upgrades and aren’t too difficult to complete.

The game can look a little dull when driving, but guess that’s what a wasteland should look like. The characters in the game are interesting, and in keeping with Mad Max: Fury Road sound superb. Mad Max run very well, without any noticeable drops or glitches, and I didn’t encounter and bugs.

If you are chasing a 100% achievements then its easily done, if you don’t mind hunting every corner of the map (which you want to do anyway for the car and Max upgrades).

Dragonball Xenoverse let you finally be a part of the Dragonball universe by creating your own time patroller, who has been summoned to stop time from being manipulated.

Growing up watching these fights it was super fun to be able to join in and pummel Freeza, Cell and Majin Buu along with all their henchmen, although I’m not sure how I managed to make a Super Saiyan Yamcha (who still managed to get killed).

I found the story to be good, the side missions to be fun (for a while) and the mastery system fun as well.

I found the game to become repetitive if you are trying to grind out certain skills or item drops (it relies on RNG and certain conditions to be meet in the stage, like beating Vegeta first, or letting Krillin die). The Grinding is painful, and some of the last missions are insanely difficult (I’m looking at you mission where I must fight every Saiyan 3 at a time). These can be easier if you have a good player joining you, but the AI tends to get destroyed (and you must share your items with the AI, where as another player gets their own items).

I also found the game very unbalanced (at least for single player)- depending on race and sex of your character the game can either be easy or difficult (female Saiyan with max super will destroy almost any boss(s) in 1 hit, making battles a matter of charging up the meter and spamming the same move.

Multiplayer was still active when I played (not sure now), and was quite good- lagged heavily a few times but that never stopped me or caused a loss.

If you are prepared to spend time grinding for a 100% and have a few people you can coax into playing with you than a 100% achievement isn’t too hard to get (just time consuming).

The DLC brings extra skills, missions and masters into the game (and a skill which ignores Kamehameha’s, which is nearly a must in the later game) and will required if you are chasing 100%
The game has its issues, but is enjoyable and If you liked watching Dragonball Z then you should pick this up.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided picks up just after the events of DE:HR. The world has turned on augs, with what was once racism turning into downright hatred and having them being rounded up and shipped off to slum cities, or disappearing entirely. With the world turning on them, it’s easy to see how the terrorist organizations that operate in this game get off the ground, and how everything becomes an it’s us or them. You play as Jensen, an undercover agent who is operating out of Prague, trying to discover who is pulling the strings in world events and setting what is currently happening in motion. The Main campaign is satisfying; however, Jensen feels as he is a man divided in this game. In DE:HR he had a goal and stuck to following leads no matter how much danger it put him in. in DE:MD he seems torn between trying to keep his cover, and finding out the truth (this doesn’t stop him from getting into danger or saving the day).

The city of Prague is wonderful as a hub city (most of your main missions happen here or return you here after woods. For some reason, it does seem smaller than the previous hub cities of the DE:HR- I’m not sure why this is the case. You do have a lot of side missions and things you can do, but it just seems smaller.

The game looks and sounds great, and offers much of what made DE:HR such an excellent game. Jensen’s new upgrades are very cool, (who doesn’t like being able to shoot giant blades at people, or turning on invulnerability titan shielding).

The DLC, while option should also be played. They do explain some of the events before the game, and other parts during it which would have killed the flow of the main campaign. I highly recommend systems rift, just to hear Prichard again

And now onto the controversial part- breach mode. Systems rift explains how the breach happened, and you play as an external hacker breaking into the mega corps servers to steal secrets. Look, you can accuse this as being a cash grab. But spending real world money isn’t needed, and if you spend enough time on it you should have what you need. Setting records and sending them to friends to compete against is great fun, and it rewards you if you fail or not though it seems that people have found out how to hack the records (00:00:00 best time- come on). My gripe about this mode is any special ammo/ consumables is not reusable, but to be fair I don’t think I used any consumables in any of the missions, and the I only used the special ammo until I got a A+ rank gun. As long as you pick the correct upgrades you should be set for any mission.

If you are chasing 100% achievements then you will need to spend some time (and complete majority of breach mode) but I would recommend that anyway as I found it rewarding.

DOOM is a great game. If you like first person shooters, this is a game you need to have. The graphics are crisp and it plays very well in 1080p or 4K, the sound is amazing.

The single player campaign is a campaign you want to play, and the glory kills mix things up so it’s not repetitive (no regenerating health here). Each mission has outcomes that are achievable (they unlock upgrades for your guns and armor) - and who doesn’t want to run around as the ultimate badass.

Snap Map is an interesting system that lets you create missions for others to play, and offers a great insight to what’s involved in making maps and campaigns.

Multiplayer is where DOOM shines. I'm not sure how active the servers are now, but when the 6.66 update came out and for a few months after it I didn’t have any issues finding lobbies that filled up quick in either US or UK (the OZ lobby was dead).

now that all the DLC is included in the game, you only need to grind out the levels in multiplayer to unlock that sweet cyber-daemon armor- and that’s not the hardest thing to do. It was also great fun turning into the daemons (which are now unlocked easily), and tearing the opposition a new one.

If you aim for 100% Achievements it’s possible to do but will depends on how active multiplayer is.

A.R.E.S plays much like the much loved Megaman X series on the Super Nintendo. While short (i think 5 or 6 stages) those stages are well designed, and have enough collectables to make you go through them enough times trying to hunt down all the upgrades. The ranking system must have been designed by a sadist, as it depends on you getting a perfect run, including against the boss, within a time limit, while also collection a set amount of drops from slain enemies. If you want a 100% run be prepared to spend a lot of time leaning each of the stages and boss patterns. The game can be played with keyboard or controller without any major issues.

While the game is great, the music is what sells it. I would recommend this game on its soundtrack alone, especially if you ever liked the 16 bit Megaman X music.

What more needs to be said that hasn’t already been said?

Considering this was released in 97, and I somehow managed to avoid playing it for 20 years, I can understand why everyone lost their $#*! when it came out.

I won't go into the plot (you would have to have lived under a rock to not have a general idea), but its typical final fantasy.

The port plays well in win 10, sounds good, and if you are happy to play a game with 20yr old graphics then this is a very good choice.

I highly recommend if you don’t already own it or haven't already played it.

I would recommend playing with a controller, and knowing that the original bindings for controllers are changed in weird ways. there are mods available that fix this

For those who like to hunt an 100% achievements score, its easily done, but will take time to get (no quick 100% here)

Now you might see a review already for Deus Ex:Human Revolution and think, hang on this game has already been reviewed and you would be right.

But I’m going to review it again for 2 reasons

The game has fundamentally changed enough to warrant it.

You can't purchase the previous version anymore in the store, meaning if you don’t already own it, this is the copy you will likely be buying.

The big changes first
The boss fights have been edited so any style of playthrough can now have the same chance of finishing them so you no longer need to run and gun them. Playing a hacker/stealth run- no worries, just hide and do your magic. Playing like you’re a cyborg death machine- everything is still all good.

The next big change is the The missing link DLC is now integrated into the main game instead of being a separate side story (The other DLC is also included but the big one is the missing link). While I’m happy that everyone can play the DLC now (it's great and adds its own layer of horror on how people are being stolen and experimented on by the government) adding it to the main game for me slightly broke some of the immersion. You were on your way to find the people who did this to you, and then you are suddenly plopped into another area, which doesn’t relate to the main quest line, with a whole new set of problems to deal with. It's explained well on why all your upgrades don't work, and it contains enough exp to get you semi functional to finish while maintaining a challenge. While foreshadowing is great, if you haven't already played the game it's easy to miss what’s coming up by playing this before finishing the game beforehand, which now you are forced to do. Adding this in I felt making getting all the achievements harder (both main game and side story had requirements for certain achievements to pop, and it’s not explained anywhere if doing something in one will invalidate it in the other, leading to a very cautious playthrough).

Overstuffing bodies in vents will still lead to deaths, and there is still no death counter in the game (it would be nice to know how many people I have killed- the man has every other upgrade including the kitchen sink). Hell, even moving bodies when upgrading strength can become risky in case you "accidently" throw them and kill them.

the below is basically a repeat from the first review (if you have already read that)

The world that has been built is now starting to show eerie parallels to our own, with this games racism now being directed at "augs", people who have become augmented either due to accident or by choice, and shows the social injustices and problems that arise from one part of the population treating the other like they are less than human and with large corporations milking the population for money

As Jensen you are given plenty of options on how to proceed through each mission, from stealth takedowns and hacking environments to running and gunning everything in view. The game rewards you for taking a more stealthily approach and exploring every part of a level. You don’t have as many options to upgrade (no swimming or other useless options), but upgrades you can chose from are all useful, and most can be used in any situation. And whoever voices Jensen needs a pay rise, his voice acting is great. In fact I don’t remember hearing any voice acting I didn’t like in this game.

even on the hardest difficulty the game isn’t super hard, and if you are doing a stealth run then it’s even better (as you shouldn’t be getting shot at anyway)

if you are aiming for getting 100% achievements this isn't a hard to do as long as you remember the above.

I didn’t want this is a quote Jensen muses about his situation, .... this is a quote you won't hear me say about this game

Zelda with daemons and angels was how Darksiders was sold to me when i picked up a copy in store. If you can imagine Link as a buff, angry man in red Armor who hacks and shoots any daemons and angels who stand in his way instead of an androgynous teenager who kills shrubs and cuts grass then this holds true.

Both use horses

Both get better armour (Wars Armor does look better than Links tunic)

Link has a bow, War has a Gun

Both have big swords

Both have zombies

actually, it is very Zelda-like

Darksiders shouldn’t take a very long time to finish- about 20 hours should see you through most of it.

Game runs very well, though it does have a well know bug that if you alt tab then achievements are disabled, which is a pain if you are achievement hunting.

getting 100% achievements isn't a hard to do, but you do need to remember the above mentioned bug and some of the more intensive quests to grind out (who throws pots at enemies to kill them)
