The game has steadily gotten worse over the last few years and gaijin has just announced economy changes that will effectively make it impossible to progress unless you constantly pay them for premium time or buy premium vehicles. It's not pay-to-win because premium vehicles aren't any better than tech tree vehicles mostly, but it will be pay-to-progress and you will be stuck with early vehicles forever. That's not a bad thing though, balance above BR 7.7 is terrible because gaijin doesn't play their own game and every update is focused more on adding more and more top-tier content in order to sell premium vehicles that is progressively less fun and progressively worse suited for the way war thunder matches work.

Gaijin accused the playerbase of review-bombing the game in order to drive away new players, that isn't happening. Review-bombing would be if people who don't play the game showed up to spam negative reviews because of some unrelated public statement made by the devs, this is people who have hundreds of hours of playtime trying to drive away new players because the devs have made it impossible for new players to stop being new players unless they give them their money for a free game.

Most of the content in this game is challenging, satisfying and balanced.

TIP: editing the .json files allows a basic level of modding of weapon and plane stats
