Early Access Review
Don't let my 2.4 hours fool you, I've probably logged 4 times that amount between the itchio demo and the steam preview demo back in summer. And boy have I been waiting for a game like this for a LONG time.

It scratches that itch that F-Zero GX left extremely well, but it doesn't allow itself to fall into the shadow of it's spiritual predecessors.

To those who love the F-Zero series the splitting of Health and Boost may seem odd at first, I know it did to me. But after a bit it clicks that the split somewhat counter intuitively benefits the vehicles who would fight the most often, making the playstyle more viable as you no longer are burning your health pool to keep up with the sprier opponents. It also provides you with other options to use your health as a resource in ways that remind me of GX's mine boosting. I really really hope they continue to expand upon ways to use health as a resource that you use for more speed.

The tracks so far have been wonderfully varied, from cylinder courses that twist and knot around themselves in disorienting ways to flat but difficult tracks with harshly sharp corners that hark onto the classic SNES F-Zero tracks. It feels that they are going to try and make every vehicle stat really matter from course to course, instead of the one-vehicle-fits-all that GX sadly fell victim to.

My only real complaint has been a lack of visual feedback while in first person, a niche complaint that sadly really impacts me as I like to race almost everything in first person. I really do hope they address this and then my hours on steam will reflect just how much I love this game!

I have owned this game since near the very beginning and yet I keep finding myself wanting to play this game when I cannot think of anything else to do.

It's great at doing that- being a fallback game. No other game has managed to hold that kind of appeal for me.

My god, this game. This game caters to almost EVERY play style in the FPS genre, whether it be a big badass luggin around a gun bigger than most other characters in the game, dishin out enough damage to take out a sentry at point blank range while it's being healed by it's engi and still live. Or being a nimble, fast ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who relies on his footwork to dodge oncoming shots rather than relying on health, quickly out manouvering, flanking, confusing and, if you play your cards right, killing the opposing team. Or if you want to be "Credit to team" and be the guy in the backfield, making sure your team doesn't get pushed back too far by building sentries, keeping them supplied with ammo and health with a dispenser, or getting your friends to the frontlines fast with teleporters.

I could go on, listing more things you could do, but that would take too long, with the 9 different classes to choose from, each playing differently. To top that off though, you get items that cover a whole range of different possibilities, adding yet further to the amount of play styles this game has.

Yes, this game is jokingly known as the "Hat Simulator" or "Hat Fortress", and I wouldn't say those jokes are wrong, sadly a LOT of people have lost focus on what this game is about. It's about blasting the hell out of the people who arent wearing the same colour outfit as you, and it's damn good at that.

This game is one of the few that still has track creation, making it very high on my list almost immediatly. It is, even though free, an extremely good game to play online, since most of the tracks online are player created. If you like fast paced races, with difficulty (of tracks) ranging from moderate to appallingly hard, then you will definatly want to have this game.
