Call of Jaurez Gunslinger. Nothing short of an amazing game by Techland. Before Dying Light, there was this. An arcade shooter that is nothing short of unadulterated fun. Published in 2013, this is a fourth instalment in a quadrilogy of games titled Call of Jaurez.

The story has you follow a man by the name of Silas Grieves, an old - seemingly legendary - bounty hunter who has ended up Abeline, Arkansas in 1910. He enters the Bull's Head Saloon, run by an unassuming bartender called Ben alongside other assorted characters. After being "persuaded" to stay by Dwight Eisenhower (yes, that Eisenhower), he stays and tells his story. This is where the gameplay comes in, as you relieve the storytelling and experiences of Silas Grieves and just how he became the man he is, and eventually finding out the true motive why he's ended up in Abeline (not for the first time, mind you). I won't go through the story, but the story itself isn't anything special or too emotive, it's more of a backdrop for gameplay.


The gameplay is tonnes of fun. It is a somewhat refreshing take on an arcade shooter with features such as perks & concentration giving it a unique twist on the genre. The gunplay is nothing short of fantastic and addicting with somewhat realistic animations for the given weapons, each all have their different general pros and cons; example being that the standard six shooter compared to the Ranger does less damage, less range but fires faster, whereas the Ranger deals more damage, has better range, but has a slow firing speed and slower reload. In total, there are four pistols, two stocked weapons, one stationary weapon (only used in specific segments in the game) and lastly an explosive. All enemies can use the same weapons as the player and there is unique enemy types thrown in with the normal fodder to create discord within fights. At the end of some stories told by Silas, the player may get into a duel and obviously the player must be faster in the duel than their enemy, as well as accurate - you often go against famous American outlaws and gunslingers of the old west adding some sense of realism. As well as the story there is Arcade and Duels, Duels is self-explanatory and Arcade use spliced or cut up segments parts of the story and the player must kill, maintain a streak and get through it as fast as possible.

I highly recommend you play this game yourself, as there isn't a lot words can do to describe just how fun it is. You'll at the very least spend 3 hours playing this game and not even knowing that time has gone by.

Mondealy: Day One is a nice demo for what's to come. It's a very interesting concept! The graphics are certainly on-point and the demo gives us the player a few situations to play around with as well as the main story. The story from what I can gather is you follow the story of Michael, who stumbles across an underground kingdom inhabited by anthropomorphic animals and Michael is formally invited to stay around..for some reason. Something to do with having dinner with the king - this is where one of my problems come in. For a story game, there certainly a lot of mcguffins and glossing over what should be important details (i.e why Michael is there at the dinner, why Ellie just had to suddenly leave, what Michael and the king talked about at the dinner, who is Barney, why do they get a portrait and a name, who even is Michael to an extent other than just a "hero to our story" etc...). I didn't find the story to captivate me at first, I found it boring; it's certainly dry just doesn't seem to get the player interested. Once you discover the kingdom however, it gets far better and more characters are thrown into the mix and I could genuinely find myself being captivated and wanting to see more of the story. As well as some interactivity for the player other than walking and reading *just* text and monologues.


The character designs are very imaginative and pleasing, both sprite and portrait. There isn't a single character who I didn't wish to learn more about from the design. It certainly gives the game a certain charm. One such character who has good design is Corsic. Corsic himself is given quite a bit of charm and animation through mostly visual storytelling rather than telling the player. It's very obvious that Corsic has some sort of interest in the player both through subtle and obvious action(s) through the times you see him. Another interesting character is Rufus, who has a very explorer look to him, and he himself is quite an enigma. I felt as if I wanted to know more about him and what he's really all about as he leaves passing comments in speech about predicting the player's actions.


The writing is a bit mixed in my book. I've noticed at some points that the English doesn't flow well/broken or incorrect grammar. Ellie especially sounds like a soulless robot to me. If the developer could get someone to proofread (as it's clear English isn't their first language) their dialogue before putting it in the game would make it a much better experience as I feel like this game is story first, interaction second.


Overall, I would recommend Mondealy: Day One and it certainly does a good job selling the full game for whenever that may release.

DOOM 64 is a fun and challenging game at times. You really have to rattle your brain to figure out some of the puzzles and some of the enemies types they throw at you at times is an uphill battle. This game likes to molest you by throwing Lost Souls at you all the time. A majority of my deaths had came through either dying to Lost Souls or me being stupid and firing a rocket into a nearby wall/being too close to an enemy whilst using the rocket launcher. The special weapon in this game - The Unmaker - can become ungodly broken if you manage to collect all the Demon Key Artifacts, becoming the strongest weapon in DOOM 64 by a long shot and probably the strongest weapon in the DOOM franchise. It gives little reason to use weapons like the Plasma Gun or the BFG 9000 even after getting the first artifact.


The enemy types are mostly the same (with the exclusion of the Archvile) but most of them with re-drawn sprites; the only new enemy being added is the Mother Demon/Mother of All Demons. With this addition it comes with various attacks, but only appears once (if not including the Bethesda "Lost Levels" continuation). It is the final enemy you fight in the game and after killing it, you win the game.


The general atmosphere of the game is dark, with most of the soundtrack being ambience rather than music unlike the previous two instalments. The game is essentially like DOOM 3 but before DOOM 3 was DOOM 3. Playing through the main campaign twice, there is only one point I ever actually get scared and it gets me every time, and that is during the second map when opening the red key door and a few Imps spawn. Other people have called this a "horror FPS" however, I disagree. I think it's more of a FPS with dark/horror undertones.

In terms of down sides, since this was released on the Nintendo 64, the animations on the shotguns were greatly censored - barely being animations at all. It makes it a lot less fun to use the Super Shotgun and it really takes away the aggressiveness and badassness of it all. But if you were to look at it on the upside, the regular shotgun doesn't block your vision because of an animation cycle like the previous two DOOM games. However, I really do think it does take away from the overall quality that the game has. But not by a lot, it's not like it's game changing and unplayable, just a minor annoyance.


Overall, DOOM 64 is a strong title in the early DOOM franchise and in my humble opinion, is actually better than the original DOOM. I had countless hours of fun playing this game and it be genuinely challenging at times, but not annoyingly hard, which is always good!

This is the greatest comedy of all time. It's like Vaudeville at it's prime. Nothing can top this. Easily the best game I've ever played, I'd give my liver and my left kidney to Asymmetric if they needed it. This game is absolutely priceless and it is more valuable than any human life on this planet.

A fun and enjoyable experience, to make it blunt. It captures the period near perfectly. If you enjoy semi-realistic FPS', you will enjoy this game.
