I bought this game, and I've had mine own disappointments with this game that seemed to be fairly universal with the people I streamed it too. It was a massive let down, and one such person managed to sum-up very well how flat this game turned out to be.

I miss the days when Frictional Games could tell a story with subtle game-play mechanics and optional notes for expanded lore, and not hours of cut-scenes and artificial padding in the forms of ridiculously convoluted puzzles. If I wanted to play Outlast 2, I'd have bought Outlast 2 instead.

Context: I am a HUGE Amnesia fan. I've 100% TDD numerous times, and have completed dozens of runs. I'm a pretty passionate fan of the game, which is why I felt compelled to write this:

Amnesia: Rebirth abandons almost every aspect of what made Amnesia: The Dark Descent a classic. The monster design is lazy and uninspired, and while the Ghul is at first interesting, it quickly becomes stale after repeated scripted scares. While the first monster has some potential, the second monster lowers the bar significantly as it is just a ring wraith from LOTR. TDD monsters were horrifying monstrosities, deformed tortured souls. What made TDD truly special was the loneliness, no constant exposition from the main character (unless you're reading optional notes), tons of wide-open area patrols kept the game unpredictable and on your toes. Puzzles were simple yet challenging, without the need for half-life combine-esque technology to needlessly over-complicate things to add another few hours to your video game. The game explores other Lovecraftian worlds of the orbs, and then decides to forget that the 'C' key exists for 60% of the game. It could have been used in wide-open patrol areas, to open temporary pockets to hide in, closing the gate behind you to hide. But it doesn't. And this game, seriously has potential to be great; The tinderbox replacement in the form of matches is genius, the hold-ctrl hide function is great as well. It has the mechanics to be something great. It feels as if the developers had an idea, saw and played Outlast 2, then decided to make that game instead. The loading screens tell a heartbreaking story, but they have no subtlety to them; In TDD, loading screens would allude to Daniel and his sister's abusive father, and his sister's fate would preemptively be decided depending on your actions taken with Agrippa. The loading screens are foreboding and vague, only revealing their meaning to those who dedicate the time to learn the lore of the Amnesia universe. The ending was just so disappointing as well.

Salim's death was covered well at its reveal, but Tasi promptly forgot about it and pretty much never mentioned it again for the entirety of the game.

The devs forgot about Salim like they forgot about the talisman. There's another potential bug/feature that's existed since TDD, in that if you were to die to a monster patrol, it would despawn, allowing you to progress in the story. That sort of exists in Rebirth as well, but the thing is you don't "die". The fear overtakes Tasi, and she runs off to a checkpoint. Tasi is literally unkillable. Even when you "die" you're forced to watch a 25 second scene of Tasi running away and coming to again, every single time. It turns a spooky gimmick into a frustrating punishment for pseudo-death. Once you understand this, as well as the endless scripted events, the game almost immediately loses its fear factor.

The ending also sucks. Daniel's good ending implies his survival through some mysticism of Agrippga, left mostly to the player's interpretation, but Rebirth's "good" ending, isn't really good at all.

Also, if you close the game and reopen it, it erases your save. Imagine spending hours deciphering alien text only to be cheated of all your time. There are lots more bugs as well including a door that locks behind you, if you don't bring the required alien wifi-router, you're softlocked in the room.

AMFP was a more faithful sequel to TDD, and that's saying a lot. If you have to play this game, but don't want to be disappointed, play the first four hours.
Honestly I feel really robbed by this title, not for my money as much as for my time. The best thing to come of this game was the expanded lore, the Shadow's reappearance, and Mikko Tarmia's amazing new Shadow Chase theme (God bless I will be purchasing this soundtrack).

The true dark descent is the descent that Frictional Games went from making constant horror classics, to Outlast 2 again.

Heckin' cute protagonist? Yea
Heckin' cool antagonist? Yea
Heckin' awesome platforming? You know it.
Heckin' awesome characters? Oh man you have no idea.

If you're a fan of 3D platformers than this one is a MUST HAVE. With the "multiplayer" aspect added it can get chaotic with even 10 others in one session. The characters and absolutely amazing soundtrack every time I play it just leaves a warm and fuzzy feeling in my heart, so good.

The GOOD kind of chaotic, by the way.

It even has WORKSHOP support. W O R K S H O P support! So much more can be done with it!

Buy it, you'll peckin' love it.

Do recommend using a controller though!

Love it!

I was standing in middle of sidewalk, pedestrian fall over me. Didn't even acknowledge I was there.

Was it worth the weight? Yes. The flippy floppy madness is 100% worth it.

Yes...I like this game.
