Alright, I’m about to update the living ♥♥♥♥ out of this review.

-Should You Buy The Game?-

If you enjoy games like Call of Duty, Rainbow Six Siege, Battlefield but want a more realistic experience, then yes. I feel like Squad bridges the gap between Mil-Sim Games like Arma and Casual FPS shooters. The game overall is super fun, but it does have a pretty big learning curve which I will get into later.

-What You Need To Play-
In my experience;
8GB ram
GTX 1050ti or AMD equivalent
Ryzen 3, or Intel i3 (the new generation ones)
These specs should be okay to play the game, but anything higher is obviously better.

You also need;
A brain
Common sense
Able to speak the language of your server
Microphone (You don’t need a mic, but like, you REALLY should get one)

-The First Few Hours-

!!! DO THE TUTORIAL !!!

Go to Jensens Range

Now the first one is in all CAPS because it’s NECESSARY. The tutorial will teach you the basics of the game. When I play as a Squad Leader, I come across blueberries (newbies) that ask me to explain the “basics” of the game, so I kick them out of my squad. Finishing the tutorial is the least you can do for your team, and yourself. I have no problem with helping newbies, but if you don’t know what the difference between a HAB and Rally point is, then euuugggghhh.

I’m also including Jensen’s range, that’s optional, but highly recommended. Just go there, spawn as a rifleman, and ♥♥♥♥ around, shoot targets, test out your graphic settings (If you do this while in a real match, you won’t be getting just coal for Christmas, I’ll personally send you an IED), and get a general feel for the game.

There are many servers that welcome new players, those will be written in the server name. I don’t recommend joining Clan Servers such as “Rusty in Places” “Royal Batallion” “Bloodbound” etc. just because there’s a higher expectancy of skill and experience in those servers. I’m not saying they won’t accept you, but you will have the slight feeling that you’re the weakest link in the chain.

The first 30ish hours should be spent playing the game as a Rifleman or Medic. These are the basic roles, you shoot the baddies, and you heal the good guys. Leave the more complicated roles like H.A.T, Marksmen, L.A.T., and Machinegunner to the other guys. I once had a player in my squad who was clearly a newbie, (I wasn’t the squad leader) he took the H.A.T kit and missed the enemy IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) 100 meters out, which then proceeded to wipe out our whole squad. FUN TIMES

After the first 30 hours, start specializing, see what roles you like most. I personally loved the combat engineer when it came out. Placing mines, and sneakily destroying enemy FOBs with C4 charges gave me such a rush. But hey, it’s your game, pick whatever you want, and stick to it once you feel like you like it.

After the 100 hour mark, you start to memorize the maps, the vehicles, and how the game’s pace works. At this point, you can consider dabbling in being an “armored vehicle” squad. Now, DO NOT make your own squad, join one that’s already created. Tell them you are new, and most likely you’ll be the driver, or the spotter. Go to Jensens Range, read the Wiki, and look at guides to learn the advantages and disadvantages of each vehicle.

Now, you’ve hit the 150-hour mark, you can now officially lead your own squad. To do this, the only thing you need is a microphone. You NEED a microphone, almost all servers will ban you if you try to be an SL without one. Create your own squad, and name it something along the lines of “New SL”, and lock it once 6-7 people join, leading 8 people at once can be exhausting at first. Do a mic check, you don’t want to lead a squad with people who can’t communicate. Tell the other SLs you are new and ask them what they want you to do. You will want to stay in back caps and defensive positions. Attacking properly requires very good co-coordination between squads, and experienced SLs.

About helicopters; they require a LOT of communication with your team and a pretty good sense of the maps, so make sure you clock at least 50 hours or so as an infantry. Flying them is relatively easy, just make sure you get a couple of hours of practice in Jensens Range. If you can’t land quickly, or keep crashing your heli, practice more. If you crash while carrying a whole other squad, congratulations, you just wasted 15 tickets, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ :)

I know that sounded a lot like a guide instead of a review, but that’s how this game will go. In my opinion, those are the general benchmarks on how the learning curve progresses.

-The Gameplay-

Once you learn the basics, the game is INSANELY fun, breaking through a tough frontline, or successfully holding out a HAB that’s being pummeled by enemies is just a pure dopamine rush. Although the first few games you’ll get shot by trees, or so you think, you’ll never want to never touch this game, but if you keep on going, know that you’ll get a sense of accomplishment that is near impossible to achieve in another game.

The gunplay is smooth and properly done, the animations are decent, and the game is relatively balanced.

-Future Of The Game-

There’s no other game like Squad, developers are doing their best to push out timely updates, the community is helpful, friendly, and eager to teach you. There are tons of guides (I recommend “[RIP] Chris_afae”s guides, they teach you basically all you can know without playing it yourself). This game will easily last another 5+ years.
