Current Edit 4/20/24:

The Developers have done some work on the game, but in ways that have only seemed to make the game worse and more lost in scope. We have a new map (Yay), but also a weather system that has made it so its basically always night time. Noon? Its Dark, Night? Pitch Black, Morning? Dark. Afternoon? Dark. Its always darker in this game than Vantablack, so I hope you really love the idea of not being able to see anything in this game.

They implemented a "Migration" system to force Herbivore players to move across the map in search of food, but apparently forgot to actually add the Food. So also expect that you'll spend hours looking for food only to starve to death.

I still 100% Cannot recommend this game to anyone, not even people I hate.

Original Review:
I've been very much into the "Dinosaur" game theme this last two months or so, and have been generally recommended either The Isle -or- Path of Titans; and I can genuinely say I can't recommend either.

Specifically for The Isle, I really want to love this game. The Positives as far as I am concerned are:
- The graphics are a little more "Realistic" and not cartoony or floaty.
- This game is about being a Dinosaur, not like an adventure game where you happen to play as a Dinosaur, an important distinction.
- I like that there is some downtime between encounters, time to relax with friends and just be a Dinosaur

Unfortunately, this isn't a whole lot to love when we look at some of the things that are holding The Isle back.

I would be remiss to not put the Development Team themselves at the forefront of issues with The isle. Not only is development glacial in pace, they appear to be focused on things that simply are not what the community is asking for. Stability is a secondary concern (if even a concern at all) and adding actual dinosaur content seems to take a second place to adding an Ark-like clone of what I will assume to be a half-implemented playable Humans to the game.

Balance is currently non-existent, mostly because many of the Dinosaurs that were in the original game (now called "Legacy" were simply removed during an update. The new version of the game "Evrima" stripped much of the original content of the game, I believe as a result of some internal strife at the developer (more on that later). They removed Dinosaurs, with the promise of adding them back, but its simply never happened. The "new" map has areas in which are completely unskinned, still using the gray-grid test pattern from a default Unity template. And now they seem to be abandoning this as well for some yet-to-be-released new thing.

I will give some props to their Artwork/Modelling people, they're fantastic and should be celebrated, but the company as a whole needs to stop putting out artwork and actually buckle down on some programming.

A second issue is some of the systems in place in the game. The vast majority of time in this game takes place in the pitch black night, I'm sure some players like this; I do not. It gets dark around 5pm in-game time, and light again around 10am; leaving most of your play time in this black-and-white night vision mode. Completely ruins the time they spent on actually making their world.

There is a "Diet" system in the game, meant to encourage players to hunt and eat specific things, This system is a complete wet blanket on your play experience. Finding the right nutrients can be downright frustrating, to nearly impossible; as some of these require other players play much less desirable species for you to hunt. Herbivores can spend hours searching for a plant listed as "Grasslands", only to find it in the woods. This system should be removed.

There also comes issue with their Official Servers. They are unstable, buggy, prone to reboots with less than a minutes warning, wipe your progress and Dinos, and over all laggy and unresponsive. They have been attempting to fix this lately, but you'd be much better served playing on an Unofficial server (May I recommend the Pixel Grove one? :) ). Somehow Unofficial Servers are more stable with more players; the sys-admin for the Developer needs to really take a look at whatever infra they're running for these games and figure out the experience for players, because right now its a abhorrent mess and a negative experience for players.

I will touch briefly on the Drama and other issues. The community for this game can be downright Toxic. Some who read this will know I stream on Twitch, and this is the ONLY Game I've ever streamed that i've had people come into chat and post the Names, Addresses and Phone Numbers for the Development team. There has been drama about people splitting from the Dev Team due to reports Pedophilia, grooming community members and other deplorable acts. While I have not yet personally dug into these, I was presented with quite a few reddit posts and such to illustrate the point; though generally I believe a game should be weighed on its own merits, and not those of a single developer at the company.

Overall, while I've had some good moments in The Isle with friends, I cannot recommend it in any way to others unless you go in knowing specifically what you're getting. You're unlikely to see anything the developer has ever promised to add, the game has no actual gameplay loop, and you will spend most of your time doing nothing, or getting killed by your own species (even as an Herbo) as people want to treat this like Call of Duty: Dino edition.

Hope this helps,
Ayka

Genuinely unsure what about this is worth a $25 Entry Fee. This is a proof of concept, and not much more. Early Access, Last Updated: 02-18-2020

Here is what you can expect:

You'll be dropped in front of a dungeon, with three options. Guild, Group and Solo. These are the exact same dungeon, except the amount of enemies that spawn in each room will differ. They are the same enemies. Enemy AI is in a terrible state, and with the locked camera and clunky controls you'll feel like your own AI is also in a Terrible State.

First you'll swing your sword, then you'll learn by holding down the attack button you can spin in a circle. Too bad hit registration is so poor its possible to spin through a group of enemies and hit only air. Eventually you'll kill an enemy to receive.. nothing. No really, this can happen. EXP is for some reason a Random drop? Sometimes you'll get Experience, sometimes you wont. For a game that includes RPG in its tags, this is abhorrent. I was in a 3 Man Group last night, and after killing a boss we opened the chest to get literally 0 Drops. No EXP, no Gold, no Items. BOSS.

That is it... All the weapons of each "type" are the exact same, you cant dual wield One-Handed Weapons, which really means they should be renamed "Main Hand" instead. To upgrade your weapons, you require Weapon Skills which can only be increased by finding Jewelry and Amulets... with Random stats on them. Found a nice new +1 Sword you'd like to use? Too bad, good luck wielding it. There is no inventory system, you can carry a limited amount of items at the start, and you can expand this slowly using in-game currency but don't expect to be able to carry that nice new sword you found for later. Finding the proper assortment of Trinkets to be able to carry that new sword is an exercise in only pain.

I am a firm believer that you should purchase any game in Early Access based on the content currently in the game, and not on "Promised Features", as that is even what Steam Recommends. Right now, I have no idea where $25 USD came from, but that is money better spent elsewhere. Developers have not yet solidified their plans for monetization of this game, but you know it has to come if the "MMO" part of this holds any water. I've heard rumour of everything from both a Box Price AND a Subscription Fee, and a "Limited" cash shop containing cosmetic items as well as being able to sell Items with character enhancing statistics on the Steam Workshop. I genuinely hope that the development team behind this settles on a go-forward strategy for their pricing/costs so players can make an informed decision.

Perhaps some day there will be enough content to justify the entry price, maybe even a subscription fee, a cash shop and a marketplace; that day is not today, and you should give this a year, maybe even two, before planting your money here and hoping it becomes a beautiful flower.

There are very few games which have both the ability to be easy to grasp the concepts, and hard to master exactly how to make them all work. Explore an asteroid with the help of a team of tiny little Duplicants and make sure they survive by providing them with all the basic needs.. not the least of which is Oxygen (It wasn't Included). Klei has an amazing history of supporting their games well after release, and I expect ONI to be no different (lookin' at you Don't Starve).

This game has a lot of interesting systems, from the logistics of moving resources around your asteroid, to even producing the power required to energize your machines; you'll expand and grow your Duplicant family to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Your ultimate goal is to survive, become sustainable, and launch a poor Duplicant into a Black Hole at the edge of your Solar System... (spoiler: They do not return... its a Black Hole, really, I'm not sure what you expected.. but I'm sure they are happy.)

You can ranch animals, all with different requirements, as well as create logic systems using basic logic gates that any 1st Year Electrical Engineering student will have nightmares about. I cannot recommend this game enough, if you've enjoyed other Logistic and Colony Survival games, ONI is for you.

This is the game I spent a lot of time streaming on Twitch, put almost 2500 Hours into it live, and learned a lot of the mechanics. I still return to it from time to Time, and I still get people asking questions about it on a nearly daily basis. It truly is a Wonderful game, from a wonderful company.

Factorio is one of those games in which you start off by saying "Tonight, I'll add an extra 10 Potions per-minute to my Science Line.", and fifteen hours later you're doubling Copper and Iron production off a new Rail System that you had to build to support the new factory. What you built resembles your Grandmothers Sunday's finest Pasta, and you're not really positive everything is going to work until that last power pole goes into place. The game is incredibly easy to lose way too many hours on, but hey.. at least you were Productive.

Im a couple of games into Northgard and I have to say I've been really enjoying it. I like how it feels like "Civ-lite", giving me multiple avenues to win, tile/area based exploration and just the right touch of City-Building. Resource management can get tricky at times, especially with Blizzards but still feels rewarding to make it through Winters.

Combat is little more than point and click, but does not feel like its the main focus of the game; despite being 25% of the Victory conditions. Resources can be a bit scarce at times, and maps can heavily favor one person over another simply by the roll of Iron/resources.

I like there are 4 different clans to play, each aimed at different play styles.

I'm going to be happy to watch this game as it gets closer to release!

Pros:
- Graphics are beautiful, and run smooth.
- Perks allow you to progress a bit further each time.
- Missions and Procedural zones give a touch of exploration.
- 3 Ships offer different playstyles and replay value.

♥♥♥♥:
- Can get repetitive. Not a ton of in-depth content.

I enjoy this game which I've played on multiple occasions and even Kickstarted. I actually did a review of the game which looks at the content on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bue92h658jI
