Very different from Path of Exile 1. It's still Path of Exile with how skills and the passive tree works as well as other general mechanics of the game. However, it's slower, much more difficult and a lot more story focussed. Great for anyone new to Path of Exile, as there are tons of hints and tooltips explaining things.

Still early on in my playthrough, I will update my review if anything changes. Edit: Completed the game! Final spoiler-free review at the bottom.

So far it's been quite fun! Music is amazing as always in Falcom games. Voice acting is hit or miss but no big deal. Combat feels smooth and responsive. The story-hook is promising, I already want to find out more.
Graphics are not what you'd expect from a 60€ game but if you've played any Ys games before, you know that graphics are this series weak point. But the gameplay makes up for it.

Edit: I have finished my Inferno-Run, cleared 100% and collected all achievements in about 55 hours playtime. Absolute incredible game, my personal GOTY so far! Story was quite fun, the writing is incredibly good, especially for a translated game. It felt believable, so did the characters.
At no point did the game seem to drag on. The pacing is pretty good and the introduce new stuff all the time. Only the beginning is a bit slow but it picks up after a couple hours.

Difficulty wise this is (in my opinion) one of the easiest Ys games, thanks to two gameplay mechanics which I'm not going to mention for the sake of spoilers.

Ship-combat is pretty fun as well, but getting repetitive due to lack of depth. Thankfully, for the most part you can decide for yourself how much you want to engage in ship-combat. There is even a consumable item that lets you skip certain ship-combat encounters. This is one of the many reasons why I think this game really respects your time.

Conclusion: If you're an Ys fan, go play this! If you like fast-paced semi-open world action games, go play this!

By far the best feeling combat/just flying around in any space game (for me). Story is okay. Exploration is fun until you get to repetitive things, but can still be fun even then. The biggest plus besides combat is the variety in ships, weapons and builds. I 100%'ed that game in 70h on the hardest difficulty, and they will keep adding content.

A fantastic game that, unfortunately, doesn't get the public recognition it deserves.
Definitely a 10/10 action RPG with good story, superb soundtrack and VERY fluid and fun gameplay.
Only downside are the graphics, but if you don't need 2021 AAA graphics then it's more than fine.

Amazing game, loved it from beginning to end (100% achievements run).

I think I actually liked the second half of the game more because of more movement-based abilities and platforming sections, however the first half was also really great because there you learned most of the enemies and their patterns, which is very important.

Awesome free-to-play experience

First off I'm gonna say I've beaten the game 100% and I enjoyed every minute of it!
This game runs perfectly fine for me and is so far my favourite of the Ys series.
-Combat is fluid. Enemies and bosses are challenging (I'm playing on Nightmare)
-Exploration is fun. There are many little things to do like fishing, side quests, raids and hunts. You have to come back to some areas later and I noticed that the monsters seem to somewhat scale with your level
-Journal keeps track of everything and you can see how much you completed in each area and how much % of materials/armour/recipes/etc you found, which means it's fun to 100% the game
-Many quality-of-life features like being able to save everywhere, equip multiple adventure gear items, swap skills and items mid battle (not boss battles), and more
-Music is FANTASTIC. Not only fantastic, but so far for me one of the best OSTs of all Falcom games
-Story seems to be really picking up at around Chapter 3. Story in Ys games was always good but never the main point. In this game though I'm REALLY interested in what's up with the people and the world. The characters are really charming and I was emotionally connected to them.

I only encountered very few issues that have now been fixed with patches. In my now ~85 hours of playtime my game crashed twice, both times I didn't lose much progress because of convenient autosaves.

I highly recommend this game to every JRPG fan and in my opinion it's a must-play for fans of the Ys franchise.

Simply one of the best multiplayer games ever made.
