good difficulty balance. first half was relaxing and easy, second half required actual effort and i made some mistakes but it wasn't frustrating.

my only complaint is that the puzzle pieces don't actually look much like sand to me. it woulda been super cool if each piece got added to a sandcastle in the bg as you completed them, or something.

having played several other similar titles, i can't recommend this game. it falls short in pretty much every way. not by a lot, it's not AWFUL, but it is distinctly less enjoyable and doesn't have anything unique to make up for it. i understand it's early access but unless EVERYTHING got reworked by a new team member, i don't think my review would change.

i strongly recommend 'golf around' instead. cheaper and not as fancy graphics, but far more enjoyable. or 'golf with your friends' about the same price, same aesthetic, just more well done.

controls are awkward- you could argue they're more realistic, but personally i found the difficulty of gauging power more annoying than fun.
camera control is awful- determining your shot direction is awkward and locks your camera, which you need unlocked to properly gauge your power.
level design is bad- levels do not scale in difficulty appropriately, are often difficult to see through, or just don't have anything interesting going on.
graphics are... okay- it's pretty, but layouts are annoying and most of the environments get in the way far more than they need to. a few times, walls were so dark in relation to the surrounding environment that i straight up didn't know where to go or how to solve the level when it otherwise would have been obvious.
music and sounds are okay- they don't add anything of value. not painful, but not pleasant either.
rewards are fine i guess- there's ball customization but it's not clear how to get the stuff.

on the plus side, it's free and extremely powerful if you know what you're doing. sculpt, rig, texture, animate, etc, with user-made add-ons adding even more functionality.

on the downside, 'knowing what you're doing' is a MONUMENTOUS task due to the overly complex and wildly unintuitive ui. even relatively simple tasks that you can do in just a few clicks in other programs are hidden within layers and layers of modes, menus, and hotkeys, and require multiple hours of video tutorials just to get a vague grasp on.

learning blender is like learning an entirely new language, even if you're already pretty familiar with 3d modeling in general. you'll have to consistently dedicate a SIGNIFICANT amount of time to following tutorials to make things you don't care about click-by-click just to gain enough skill to use this program for ANYTHING. if you want to do something quick and simple, like just make a simple model and paint it or make a pattern out of it, and you want to spend maybe a few hours doing so rather than a month, you'll have much better luck finding another program that is much more user friendly and less bloated.

(warning; was in a bad mood when i tried this game and wrote this review) controls are bad, graphics aren't great, and i am overall very unsatisfied. my only option right away is to just wait for the tree to grow on its own- there's no way to speed up time and already grew in so many borked up ways that i want to fix but none of my tools work. one of them says i have to wait a year, the other doesn't say anything, it just doesn't work. i don't have nearly as much control as i thought i would, and watching it grow isn't satisfying at all, it just feels janky as ♥♥♥♥.

as a freebie with viscera or shadow warrior, do recommend. as it's own thing for 40$? not a chance. it's a single map, pretty quick to complete and easy to get both achievements on the first try.

this is the most satisfying cleaning game i've seen so far, and it has so many levels and achievements! i just wish the intestines weren't so stiff. and we could crouch.

some things i wish i'd known sooner;

signing off on a job done very poorly gets you fired, which results in your office being totally reset, including anything you had brought back in your trunk.

filling out the extra optional form when you sign off on a job can get you extra points that make up for any super small missed stains or trash, enabling you to get employee of the month without pulling your hair out. (it can be ksljsklfjsljlk but should have some spaces and periods and be as long as possible)

there are lots of secrets and achievements to get, so you should create a save of every level after you've cleaned it but before you leave, so that you can easily go back if you missed something without having to re-clean the whole level.

id tags are meant to be turned in by slamming them into the sign-out machine. there's an achievement for bringing 30 of them back to the office, tho. (there are way more than 30 in the game, so if you plan to do all the levels, you could just keep the ones with the funniest names)

lore notes count as trash, but you should keep the ones from bob. there's several achievements tied to them. you'll also want to keep one of each of the monster heads, and the glowing green vials(you have to take them to another level and break them ON A CORPSE).

putting barrels and crates in their marked zones gets you some points, and on some smaller levels those few points are very important if you want to get 100% completion.

doors that have number pads can be unlocked, even if you don't know the code. this includes the ones in your office, one of which opens up to a larger storage space, so you don't need to be as conservative with trophy gathering as you might initially think.

lovely way to spend christmas :D be it cleaning or making things worse and stealing stuff.

i had never met a rouge-like(well i suppose it's actually a rouge-LITE) i actually enjoyed until this game. it wasn't what i thought it was based on the store page and lets plays i'd seen when i got it(and i mean that story-wise, the gameplay is not false advertising), but, it is wonderful, just in a different way. i learned, i had fun, and i had a surprising amount of feels.

*wipes tear* good game.

----2024 update----

when i first made this review, kaycee's mod wasn't a thing. i just finished 100%-ing it. it's a very different experience and i think it is perfect for people who didn't like the story and extra acts of the main game, but even tho i loved the main game, i also loved kaycee's mod. the game was already great and this enabled me to get so many more hours of fun out of it. cannot recommend inscryption more than i do.

fun little puzzle game. not too hard and not very long, but for 2 dollars you can't go wrong.

barely over an hour but it was pleasant.
