Buggy and unoptimized, even with a beast of a PC you're going to experience stutters and lagging. Gameplay is nothing special, but the artstyle is cute. There are better platformers out there.

An "Arena Rogue-like boomer shooter", That's a mouthful to say. Impaler is what you would expect from the description, a Quake-like shooter with some nice 2D sprites and rogue-like elements such as weapon unlocks and upgrades after every arena.

Combat is the fast-paced '90s shooter you know and that has been emulated and improved upon over the last few years with the revival of the format. Impaler differentiates itself by the weapon of the same name, a constant alternate during any run. Mostly a one hit kill against weaker enemies, it can be upgraded as to give a significant damage dealer. When overwhelmed, it can also be used as a boost in order to gain altitude, activating a stomp ability as you fall to the ground or onto an enemy. The guns are unlocked through normal gameplay, no need to go out of your way to get them, and they can be chosen every time you start a new run. The upgrades are "unlocked" by choosing then blindly at first during gameplay, as afterwards you'll be able to see what you're choosing.

At least for now the game is structured so there's 2 or 3 combinations of enemies and layouts per level, which means that after a couple of runs you'll already see all there is to see here. Still, for such a cheap price and (possible; hinted after the final boss) future updates you get what you pay for right now. There's also a score system for those who obtain enjoyment in going for the highest. I recommend this if you enjoy the Quake style gameplay without the level design complexity.

*If the game gets any significant update I may update this review

Early Access Review
It's cheap and addictive. Vampire Survivors is everything one might want to see in a quick, 30 minutes per session, roguelite (roguelike? There are so many terms I don't even care). This is a reversed bullet hell, where you face waves of enemies while acquiring and upgrading weapons in order to maximize your attacks. Even if you can't survive the 30 minutes necessary, it uses upgrading and unlocking mechanics that last after your run. Unlocking weapons is a necessity if you wish to survive.

100% achievements require levelling up character to levels 99-100 in a run, surviving under certain conditions, creating evolved weapons and finishing the levels already present (plus fighting some end level bosses). Completing all achievement is not necessary, but if you wish to unlock characters and items then you will get then naturally. With each update comes a couple of new achievements, so I will be coming back to it for a couple of days whenever they roll out.

While still in early access, patches come out very frequently, so much so that I worry a little that the developer may be overworking themselves a bit. For 3 dollars full priced, the content present is worth it, and the continuing development means a steady stream of content to play in the future, even if the game stopped updating at this point I feel I already have my moneys worth.

(I will update this review if a big update rows out and something need changing. I will also look back on it once the game comes out of early access)

I'll start this review by saying that this game is not for everyone. It has a really steep learning curve and depending on how you make your character it'll be impossible for you to proceed some quests, including the main one. The quest system in this game is filled with dead ends where the only option is going back a couple of saves. The combat is not very complex either, having a few selection of weapons and few attack options, it feels like a eastern european rpg from the 2000s in this sense.

With that said, Age of Decadence is a fenomenal game if you're into storytelling and wordbuilding. The post apocaliptic rome setting in this is very obisdian-like (imagine a mixture of Caesar's legion and the ancient civilization from tyranny), and the only way to experience it fully is with multiple playthroughs. There are so many ways in which event can unfold due to your interactions, if you complete or not certain quests. If you decide that playing it once is good enough for you that's fine, every class tied to a guild has multiple paths for you to complete the story and to get different endings (9 in total). If you choose a class that isn't already in a guild you can decide to enter one or not (there's no starting class for the legion, but starting as a mercenary or another combat focused class is adviced).

When I first finished the game i had around 13 hours logged on, for 100% it took me more 24 hours with save scumming for achievements involved in the same quests. Still, after a while you can finish this game in less than an hour if you so desire, so it really isn't a big task to complete it. I fell in love with the world of this game, and in my opinion the best way to play it is going for the 100%, seeing the story in it's entirety.

A decent retro shooter with a basic magic system. Weapons feel heavy and with impact, the sound really adds to a feeling of carnage. The soundtrack also slaps, almost a month after being done with the game and I still think about the main menu theme sometimes. Graphics are really nice as well, good use of pixel graphics and lighting to create different atmospheres in each of the five game worlds. You can also customize as you see fit, making it darker or using filters.

My biggest gripe is the fourth boss of the game, a tank that destroys you while spawning infinite enemies. I have no idea how you can defeat it on nightmare difficulty without staying in the elevator and hoping you have enough health to kill him with explosives. Up to that point the game was somewhat challenging, but it just becomes unfair all of a sudden. Movement can be somewhat clunky, the lack of jumping made me want to refund it on the first few hours but after a while I got used to it (I know jumping will be a feature on the sequel).

Overall it's a pretty good game. Took me 20 hours and two playthroughs for 100% achievements but you can definitely do it in less time. Try it if you like old school shooters or you're interested in getting into the genre with something that feels more modern.

It was pretty good, buggy as all hell, but good.

Unfortunately my save got corrupted 19 hours in and i'm not gonna replay it, i feel like i wasted my time.
Also, finished the Caspian level and never had night vision, pretty sure i should've. This game could really use a bunch of patches.

I may come back in the future if they fix the saves deleting themselves.

So i was there, sitting on my chair and waiting for the game to load, when i felt the taste of the banana i just ate on my mouth. It tasted pretty good. While it was loading, the game showed me very cool screenshots which made me think "that isn't what this game looks at all but i wish it was". After that i wanted to play Mass Effect because of the screenshots. Then it crashed.

Buyed this when it launched as an Early Acess.
It had ONE update in an year, which happened in the month it launched, and then the devs took it out of Early Acess. From what i remember, one tiny update with some bug fixes do NOT make a game complete.
This is incomplete garbage and unfortunately i played over 2 hours. If i knew about how scummy these devs would be i wouldn't have bought this content-lacking game.

I never seen to get bored from this game. The story always catches my attention even though i saw that same cutscene 10+ times. After 200 hours on PC and who knows how many on the 360 there's probably stuff i still don't know about in the game and, surely, many skills i haven't used yet. Some day i will do a more complete review to this game, but for now i just want that bloody badge for the autumn sale thank you very much.
