Updating this review a month later because some of the mechanical issues that plagued the game at release are still present with no signs of improvement:
- The combat slide (which requires investment to even use) still goes half an inch and is effectively useless
- Suit protection still has buggy indicators that can persist outside of "hot zones"
- The robot still does its utmost to prevent you from moving inside of your own ship.

This is just a handful of the most persistent issues that I would have expected to be addressed before the game was released, let alone a month later. While I still enjoy the game <enough> I continue to encourage people not to get invested in the first place.
Original review follows.

It's... fine?
If you're craving a Bethesda game, this accomplishes that, but for an open-world space game it often comes off as quite claustrophobic: There's no free exploration in space, which is organized more like a series of encounter rolls in a static location. You jump from orbit to orbit through fast travel and the space locations, even around the colonized worlds, feel very empty with no room for exploration - what's there when you jump in is what's there when you jump in.

On the ground, the majority of the planets are cookie-cutter, while several of them will have a handful (usually 3-6) of interesting lifeforms to explore, the majority are largely empty rocks. That would be fine if they weren't also blatantly obvious about being procedurally generated; within the first two hours of play I had visited two facilities on two different planets that were carbon copies of each other, down to the lore books scattered around the area and the "hidden treasure" area and its contents. Coming from Skyrim where every insignificant cave is uniquely crafted (though other random features are present of course) this was something of a letdown.

Last but not least I should mention that the opening is.... rough. The first few hours have the weakest story intro Bethesda has given us to date, to the point that they would have been better off not having one at all and just dropping you in the middle of space with a ship based on your background. I may be overly critical here because the game also throws way too much at you mechanically early, a lot of which you will have limited functionality with anyway, but full visibility.

I enjoyed it. And the more I play the more that's true. But I can't recommend it. 5.5/10 at best.

If you want to simply enjoy a game, pick this.

If you want to prove to someone that video games can be art without a AAA budget and graphics that melt modern computers, pick this.

This game occupies a unique middle-ground between visual novels and the old text-based adventure games. If you're the sort of gamer that spent their early childhood hiding with a flashlight reading fantasy novels late at night, this is for you.

I gave it a fair shake, I really did.
There are parts of this that are fun. I'd be wrong if I said I never enjoyed it, but it falls so massively short of 2, and even pre-sequel, that I'm mostly disappointed.

The gunplay is excellent. That's my only real positive note. The gunplay is stellar and in my opinion the best in the series.

But that's badly outweighed by the unskippable, low-quality writing. Large chunks of the game are spent watching the supporting cast talk to each other in ways that roadblock game progression. This only becomes more miserable on any subsequent playthrough as you are forced to sit through the same long chunks of mediocre to bad dialogue again and again. I'd complain more about the lack of inclusion of the player character in these main events (one of the main sticking points is the power and manipulation of sirens, meanwhile the player can be a siren will have zero interaction with this) except I'd fear that such a complaint would encourage more of the horrendous writing implementation that has come out of Gearbox in recent years.

If your game has multiple "positive" reviews saying the way to make the game playable is removing the narrative content of the game, those reviews are not positive.

While this was a great title, there is a lack of support and update for modern machines. If you're running on your mid aughts toaster then 10/10 get it, but this title does not play well with modern machines and resolutions.

Lacks the intuitive balance necessary in a roguelike deck-builder. This isn't an issue with it being too hard as some have said, but rather an issue with the variability in difficulty being too wide on too early a curve. The tried and true methodology that the variability curve starts narrow but easy then ramps up to match higher difficulty/the learning curve is not understood in this title.

I don't like rhythm games. I don't like fighter games.
I loved this game anyway. Its story is light fun, the voice acting is top-notch, and the music is excellent.
The actual combat is fun too, but the overall of this game is what makes it great.

I was originally lukewarm to the updated style, but with adjustments to the ability to zoom, manipulate the map, and some updates on visibility, this is a fun way to revisit the original desktop dungeons, which was already a lovely way to whittle away half an hour or more. With that said, the 3d style still suffers some from visibility issues that may make it difficult for a new player. Things like the loss of the combat log making it difficult to understand how god punishments work and some other changes mean that aspects of the game are a bit hard to understand. Still, at 20 bucks it's hard to find a better way to scratch the roguelike dungeon crawl itch in half an hour.

Dwarf Fortress, but more sane and with a functional UI that doesn't require selling your soul.
The DLC are all worth it, but pick it up and play Vanilla first, as they can complicate gameplay.

The modder community is significant and the workshop is definitely worth looking at once you've dipped your toe in.

A tentative yes. Between an unpolished ending and reliance on older entries for some of its narrative beats, Return to Monkey Island is best enjoyed by long-time fans of the adventure game genre and Monkey Island itself.
With that said, I enjoyed the game while playing it, and had several laugh out loud moments while playing.
