Think Sid's Meier's Pirates but in space, and with a lot of nice modernization improvements to the mechanics.

Slow to start with a lot of information to understand, but once you get the hang of it, there's a ton to explore and experience and enjoy being a space ship captain/pirate with ship combat, crew combat, trading, factions, story and random missions, et cetera.

Nice spaceship ARPG, multiplayer seems to be empty unfortunately.

Singleplayer game with ridiculous RNG mechanics to resolve everything and microtransactions on top of that all. MTX in a singleplayer game, are you kidding me.

Wouldn't even recommend it on sale. I'd refund except it took me too long to see all of the hideously glaring flaws.

EDIT: The RNG dictating everything is probably as harmful, if not more harmful, than the loot crates and MTX. If you thought losing 80%+ chance rolls in other games is bad, this one hurts so much more. Often to boost your chance to win, you are discarding or sometimes even banishing (more on that later) many cards from more than just your character fighting the key battle but other characters to boost them. Range weapons, boons, that sort of thing. That moment when you raise a 10% chance to succeed to 90% chance to succeed vs a boss that you likely won't get another chance to beat (there are pin down and lock out mechanics to prevent them from fleeing and needing to be fought repeatedly) and fail spectacularly anyways, ruining the entire adventure, well if that's not infuriating I don't know what is.

Other aspects are also too RNG dependant. Trying to search through 6 locations only to have the minions who allow you to 'lock down' those locations at the bottom of the deck is a guaranteed failed adventure because of the clock you are always fighting. And it swings both ways, sometimes you have an insanely quick and easy time because 4 of those locations have the lockdown enemy at or near the top of the deck and you just breeze through the adventure not evening using half of the alotted time. There's no decision making process that can save you from badly shuffled adventure location decks.

And yea, you can sometimes permanently banish cards. The hearthstone equivalent would be using and destroying your card during a match, and then not having that card anymore in your collection, it's just gone forever. Unlike hearthstone, can't craft any card you want/need either, it's all up to the RNG loot crates.

Overall a fantastic coop experience, with some minor flaws.

There's plenty to do and hunt for in a very open world experience, and all the videos and lore and cutscenes are an interesting break from the action. There are pretty interesting ways to approaching the game, from true stealthy Ghost style to guns blazing rambo, though it seems that mixing it up every now and then is good to keep the experience fresh.

Singleplayer experience just to see the story is probably not worth it, but with friends or randoms with compatible play styles it can be loads of fun. I think difficulty tuning is definitely off though. The skull count for each region doesn't seem to really mean much, I've had trivial defense missions in sector 5 zones where barely a trickle of enemies attacked, and some mortar defense missions in lower difficulty zones where it feels like the enemy onslaught never ends.

Vehicle controls are absolutely terrible. I shouldn't struggle to make a helicopter fly in a straight line or have cars slip and slide all over the road while somehow climbing 70 degree incline mountains.

Single player is a dull experience only good for experiencing the story and watching cutscenes.

But playing the entire campaign in co-op, not just some weak skirmish mode, is refreshing and tons of fun with friends. Properly using stealth and acting like proper ghosts or just going full rambo can be equally entertaining, and there certainly seems to be enough opportunities for all manner of serious fun or goofing off. I played 12 hours with a friend to fully clear the 2 BETA zones (full game says it has 21 zones) and it was still fun to play with my other friends because their style makes for a different experience.

It's a little steep on the full AAA price, but if you have no problem with that, and you have some 1-3 other friends to also play the game with, it'll be worth at least a few nights of good fun and lots of laughs in full campaign co-op. So I'll buy it.

On sale for less than $2, this game could be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in a bag and it might still get a positive recommendation...

As it turns out, this is actually a brilliant way to spice up a game of virtual Poker. Great characters, plenty of well done voice acting, interesting unlockables, and good atmosphere (revealing that last card can be very suitably tense).

Some of the jokes get old after you hear them over and over, especially the long ones though.

Shame it never got DLC to expand the cast of AI players, I wouldn't mind rotating players in and out every now and then.

I don't know what's more brutal, the way the game punishes your officers and department or the all-too-real dark and seedy characters and storyline the game offers. Either way, it's a fantastic manangement game. Sort of like if the World of Warcraft garrisons were a whole game in itself, but just better because that's the whole game.

Also, there is an officer Chris Lovasz in the game... and that's Sips! I hope he finds this officer in this playthrough!

TLDR: Awesome DLC with new weapons, armor, equipment, enemies, lore, voice acting, and fun.

Can't really compare this to modding, because it's far better than any mod. The new enemies are serious contenders, not just reskins with 1 or 2 extra abilities. If you think you can just muscle them down the first time you see a Ruler with the same tactics you've always been using, they are going to give you a rude shock.

The Rulers are pretty nuts in terms of difficulty, but not unbeatable. New tactics, and smart use of the new tools the game provides, as well as some old tools like stasis make them far from impossible to tackle. I wish you could fight them repeatedly, one just one each per campaign. More super bosses is good, because end game soldiers are insanely powerful and need a significant challenge to go up against.

There's all the production value of course, with new voice acting, at least one new map location too. Worth at least 1 whole new playthrough, and probably more.

Brutally hard, but very interesting to play again and again. A bit grindy, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Everything that GSB (Gratuitious Space Battles) should have been, but utterly failed at.

Here you get a nice campaign mode with good ship and equipment progression, and even in battle you have limited control of your ships. Makes all the difference in the world. GSB battles is just watching a screensaver, this game has just enough tactics to be interesting, but not so much that you are super busy playing many RTS games (APM overload) and you can sit back and watch the missiles and explosions fly.

Definite recommend for the price, no question.

I was going to wait until I pass 1000 hours played to review, but the latest performance patch convinced me to post my positive review sooner. I highly doubt I can say anything that hasn't already been said by countless other positive reviews so I'll just list a few short items and add my recommendations to this awesome game!

1. Solid turn based strategy that looks beautiful.
2. Good support in official patches and content release plans so far.
3. Soldier customization is amazing!
4. And maybe most importantly for the long term, superb modding support and potential. If there's something you don't exactly like about the game, you can mod it to your heart's desire. Fine tune the game exactly to your personal idea of 'fun'. You can't ask for more than that!

I easily see this game being the first Steam game I put more than 1000 hours into, especially as future content and mods pave the way for more great fun and new adventures!
