I don't care about the price, I don't care about the length, I don't care about the fact it's just the first episode and the others are yet to be released (or maybe not? Seeing as it's been like a year and a half with no news), I'm here to talk about Ciconia Phase 1 as a standalone VN and compare it to Higurashi and Umineko.

First of all, without even getting into the story, I want to note something I found extremely odd, possibly indicative of production problems. If you've read Umineko you might remember how it has an excellent soundtrack made by multiple people, and Episode 1 alone has something around 40 tracks (mind you, Umineko Episode 1 is shorter than Ciconia Phase 1). Ciconia not only has less tracks, with something around 33, but many of these are also royalty-free music, bringing the number of original tracks to something around half of what the Umineko Episode 1 OST was.
Why couldn't the same composers that worked on some of the tracks of this VN just work on the rest of the tracks? If they didn't have enough composers, why didn't they just get more of them? The original tracks in Ciconia are mostly just dai and xaki, while Umineko had like 3 or 4 more main composers (zts, -45, Luck Ganriki, etc.). Where did all of these guys go?
Royalty-free music on something that is, one way or another, a sequel to Umineko, is just incomprehensible to me.

Now for the story itself. It has been warned that this story is not a murder mystery, as the other two were, which wouldn't be a problem if the story itself was good, so I'm not going to be judging it based on the absence of murder mystery since that was not the point of the story.

Unlike Higurashi and Umineko, Ciconia's setting has a global scale, involving countries and alliances and militaries and stuff in a futuristic post-WW3 world. The main characters are kids which are basically superweapons (lke mechs, maybe) and serve as deterrents of conflict between the countries in the world, who are in a state of constant tension, like some sort of Cold War, except it's all adorned as if everyone was friendly and stuff in order to not make anyone panic.
What I feel is one of the main themes of the story is the irony of using the threat of military power as a means of preserving peace, instead of striving to achieve true peace.
How is this theme conveyed? Well, besides from the setting itself, the kids are always talking about a certain metaphorical concept which is the "Walls of Peace". Their objective is to hold the "Walls of Peace" from opposite sides in order to keep them standing. This is of course, an extremely, incredibly, unbelievably subtle metaphor for countries which are equally threatening each other with military power but neither does anything because that leads to complete destruction.
Now here's the problem: these kids are CONSTANTLY talking about the Walls of Peace, not just once or twice, but EVERY SINGLE SCENE where they're gathered they must without fail talk about supporting the Walls of Peace, EVERY SINGLE SCENE. I searched the game's script file, and the term "Walls of Peace" appears around 150 times. ONE HUNDRED FIFTY TIMES. I know, I know, I get the metaphor, I get the message, just stop. The most offensive thing is that they're obviously talking about holding the Walls of Peace because they're inevitably going to fall, because why wouldn't they? It's Ryuukishi07, it's a When They Cry, there's going to be a tragedy which starts as a light-hearted story, it's plain obvious, and it's constantly foreshadowed in this ironic way, the problem is that this foreshadowing takes too damn long and there's no point to it. The facade doesn't crumble until the story is nearly over, while in Higurashi and Umineko it does so at around the midpoint, which makes complete sense.

So besides from beating the Walls of Peace over your head, what's going on in Ciconia? There's around 30 characters in Ciconia, of whom only a handful are developed or get their backgrounds explained in any significant way (which doesn't mean they're developed the whole way through, since this is just Phase 1). The main protagonist in particular has some very interesting stuff going on, but by the end of the story it goes nowhere, leaving you to wait for the next episodes.

The rest is exposition about the world, and movements by the many big participants of the world, causing the plot to move forwards in ways that we may not yet fully understand, which is what you could consider the mystery element in Ciconia. This part is what you could consider the most interesting part of the plot, but it's at any rate pretty standard stuff, and if you're used to this kind of story it's not going to be anything very exciting. It's very different from the other 2 WTCs, that's for sure, but that doesn't mean it compares to other stories with similar genres or settings. I would rather have Ryuukishi make a story wholly focused on the characters, which is what he does very well, instead of having an immense number of elements moving around in ways that have already been done before.

There's another element that's rather disappointing. This comprises the story in general but should not spoil specific plot points, but I'm going to wrap it in spoilers since it's a connection you might not make until the end of the story.
The whole story of Ciconia basically follows the Book of Revelations allegorically, with the Book itself even appearing within the story. There's a handful of other biblical references, though I'm not very well versed on the Bible to talk about the details of this. So this sounds cool and all, but at the moment, there's no apparent meaning for the story being an allegory to that. Cool Bible reference, but it doesn't seem to go anywhere ultimately. This also makes you wonder what the point of the story was, if it was just going to follow Revelations anyways.

So no, I don't recommend Ciconia, and in fact, I dislike it. Future Phases might entirely change how you see this one in retrospective, as Ryuukishi07 is known for doing, but I'm not holding my hopes too high. And hopefully the next ones have an actually well produced soundtrack.

super hot anime action, explosions, amazing customization system, epic soundtrack.

easy on beginners by letting you accumulate starting lives the more 1UPs you get on each level (e.g. if you start out with 2 lives on stage 1, and you get a 1UP while playing it, next time you go play stage 1, even if you haven't beat it yet, you can choose up to 3 starting lives. get another 1UP, and now you can choose up to 4, and so on).

the customization is really fun, there's tons of stuff you can unlock and change, from main and sub weapons, to things like the engine (which changes your speeds and how the speed change mechanic works), to the special attack, equipped addons, even the ship color. you can mix and match to play however you like or in whatever way you think works best for each stage.

the anime yelling prompting you to destroy everything in your path while not dying goes hand in hand with the awesome Yousuke Yasui soundtrack (edit: actually only the music for 3 stages plus the boss theme are done by Yasui i've been lied to, still pretty good overall), like fine wine and cheese.

this game is made by the same developers as ESCHATOS, having pretty much the same feel, except its obviously segmented and has story to go with it, unlike ESCHATOS which is a whole uninterrupted trip. if you haven't played ESCHATOS (which you should) then this feel is basically chaotic, fast bullets but not too complex or dense patterns (though there ARE some tough sections that are pretty bullet hell), lots of solid explosions, all carried by the FM-like hot action soundtrack which is pretty unique. in this particular game i think the "texture" of the soundtrack is kind of at odds with the 3D graphics and anime aesthetic, since it's not particularly a retro game, but that somehow only makes it better.

this game is actually pretty hard, at least in Normal mode, but thanks to the 1UP feature mentioned above you can eventually get through anything regardless of your skill by sheer grinding alone. there are also no continues, probably because of this forgiving life system and because you go into stages separately from a level select instead of playing the whole game in one go like most shmups. there are 10 stages, and some of them are pretty damn long.

haven't finished story mode yet (i'm at stage 9) and im expecting there to be some sweet unlocks once that's finished, especially if i manage to beat it in Normal instead of Easy, so i might update this review if there's anything nice to mention.
