SFM使用着和游戏相同的资源，所以游戏中任何存在的东西都可以被用在电影之中，反之亦然。提供利用现代 PC 游戏的硬件渲染能力，SFM允许故事叙述者工作在“所见即所得”的环境之下，反复排演观众最终所能看到的情节。
最近Valve发布了视频制作软件SourceFilmmaker，这是一款允许玩家使用Source引擎打造自己视频的软件。实际SourceFilmmaker早就在Valve内部广泛使用，有不少游戏的预告片实际上都是通过这款软件打造的，可见其专业成都令人发指啊啊。当然Valve内部使用的SourceFilmmaker和现在发布的SFM 是否一致还有待进一步考证，建议初学者或者有排戏场经验的业余人士普及！！！
