I have this folder on my desktop labeled "Death Threats." It's sad to say that this can be be par for the course when you are a woman with an opinion on the internet. Especially feminist opinions.

There's this thing we used to call "misogny" or "sexism" that we now call "misoginist trolling" whenever it happens on the internet. The troll fighting strategy has always been to ignore them. "Don't Feed The Trolls," they say.

When we call a spouter of vile misogny a "troll," what are we saying? We're saying "Don't take it seriously, ignore it." Do we tell women to not take a work place harasser seriously? What about a woman who's work takes place on the internet? Can She Just Ignore it?

This suggests that this is an "internet" problem, rather than a "society" problem. The dominant advice of "don't feed the trolls" means that many bigots and misogynists never have to face their critics, because their critics are encouraged to shut up.
