Is the Kingdom becoming more exclusive?
Hello to all. I am Bellone, also known as lulli, le bien aime. And I am here to talk about a phenomena that I have been seeing more and more of lately: the lack of inclusiveness that should be expressed within the mods and donors.

By making this statement, I am referring to two things: 1) Attitudes expressed by mods/donors when dealing with small rulebreakers that don't know otherwise, and 2) the increasing number of donors and mods leaving to alienation of newcomers. These problems may seem small now, but they may get worse over time and change outside views of the Kingdom.

The first is a situation all too common: some guy comes on the server, resentful of the spam, either asks someone to turn it off (or screams) and gets muted and spited for his disordinance to the rules. This also applies to people who use the chat to blurt things like "Why do micspam servers exist?" and "Thank god for mute". Rule-breakers are rule-breakers, and the moderators as well as donors like myself have every right to carry out what the motd has enscribed. But along with the mute/gag, some people spite the complainer by lashing out against him or her for not reading the motd and ignoring the rules. I don't like when this happens, and I try to avoid it myself, mainly because I can connect with the newcomers. Most servers out of big-name groups like Skial install Pinion and let you listen to ads! People do not play TF2 because they want to listen to advertisements; they want to relax to a nice game of fortuitous murder! No wonder why people don't know right away that we are a Micspam Kingdom, because on most servers it's the same: adsadsadsadsadsadsadsadsadsadsadgaem. It kind of makes the motd ineffective if we want to cut down the amount of small-time rule-breakers and ultimately the harshness toward newcomers.

The second event I speak of is happening as more people get into micspamming and the server in general: they donate. The price being only 5$ for a general donorship with all the perks is very tempting, so a lot of regulars eventually donate at one time or another. What happens, though, is that we can get an overflow of donors on the server, meaning that newcomers will be alienated when they see a server with a bunch of regulars doing what they like to do, almost if the newcomers missed out on something important or that they don't belong on the server.

Both of these things are real, and I mean REAL, issues to the server, and I think if they progress on their seemingly due course, they may greatly affect server traffic.

Thank you for reading these serious concerns,

Bellone

Unfortunately, with a server as unorthodox as ours, people will not want to deal with it and will complain, no matter what warnings or messages are given. Could there be some other ways to get the concepts and rules of the server to a newcomer? Yes, but the more hoops we throw at people to get them to understand the rules, the less appealing the server becomes. The problem is finding a balance between effectively communicating the rules and not distract from the server's operations.

With a community as large and diverse as ours, a lot of our customs are, again, quite unorthodox to most pub players. I got into the community by following the cues of donors and mods that helped me get accustomed to a new atmosphere I hadn't seen elsewhere. If you want to see a more inclusive community, you would need to follow the same principles other donors observed when they helped me. Say hello to a returning player, encourage participation in spamming or talkingin chat, anything that removes some of the uneasiness some people experience on a new server.

Post note: I will say that because I play the game at a lower resolution, the MOTD clips and requires a sizable amount of scrolling for me to fully read and navigate. Maybe some of the ignorance stems from people not wanting to scroll through a page to read everything, especially if they carry the notion the server is just like any other. I think fixing the resolution could help people see it better, and get them better acquainted with the server.
I agree that the community as a whole is becoming more unfriendly to newcomers and I think it's unfortunate. While a lot of new people are grumpy and not understanding of our server's unique rules, we need to understand that micspam as a whole is vilified by the TF2 community so that's what they're used to. I understand they didn't read the MOTD but, let's face it, people are here to play games not read rules.

We should embrace the new blood, not shun it. The community won't make it otherwise.

Exactly.
