Is there a way to make an in-home streaming desktop shortcut?
My Question in a bit more detail

Is there a way to create a desktop shortcut that launches in-home streaming from the icon?

My Situation

I have a pretty bad computer, my dad has a good-ish computer that can at least run some graphics intensive games. But i like to use my computer to play them, the solution? In-Home Streaming! But, i kinda wanna like stream every time i play a graphics intensive game.

Ok, I finally figured it out. It's actually pretty simple. You can either copy the .lnk desktop shortcuts from your host PC and transfer them over to the client PC (email, flash drive, etc.). As long as the client PC is already set up as a client to your host PC, when you try to open those links, Steam knows it has to remote the game since it is (a) not installed locally, and (b) being played on a client PC.

Alternatively, you could just make your own shortcuts and paste properly formatted Steam launch URLs like this example:
steam://rungameid/730

But you'd have to find each game's unique ID (the last three digits in the example above), which can be done by right clicking the desktop shortcuts on the host PC, going to Properties, and copying whatever is in the URL or Target field. High likelihood either method may leave you with a bunch of iconless shortcuts which is less than aesthetic, but you can also right click > Properties > Change icon... to work around that issue. Your games icons are located (on the host PC) in [Program Files location]/Steam/steam/games/

Hope this clears this up for anyone still searching this problem like I was this morning!

Using Windows: not as far as I know (whitch doesn´t mean there may be a solution for this)
Using Linux: yes, though it´s not easily done

But hey: the two clicks clicks needed to start streaming will not kill you, will they? ;)

Actually it's more like 5 clicks, but yeah it won't kill me, could you tell me how to make the linux shortcut? or redirect me to someone who can? i am pretty good with computers so i may be able to get it working on windows somehow

I'm interested in this too. Was able to set it up on windows, but never between two linux steam boxes. Oddly enough, the steam link app works great save for the lack of keyboard emulation
Instead of making the linux shortcut like you suggest, if you uninstall the games from the computer in your room, then any time you go to start one of those games it will automatically stream them from your dads computer. In the steam client, it will select to stream instead of play local.

I think, if you uninstall the game you are talking about from your local machine, so long as steam is set up correctly, you should be able to set up a shortcut using the steam client. I didn't uninstall the game, i just selected to stream it from the launch options before i clicked create desktop shortcut.

wait what are the arguments for streaming? tell me this now i need to know it will be exactly what i wanted
I used the steam client to generate the desktop shortcut for me. Select stream in the drop down on the right where it says play, then right click in the lib view, go to properties, then create desktop shortcut.

- Select stream from the play options when viewing the game in the library view. Where it says "Play" there should be a down arrow to the right, where you can select to stream it.

- In the lib view on steam, highlight the game you want to stream in the game list, right click on the game and bring up the menu. Click properties. In the properties window, click the "Create desktop shortcut" icon.

If your launch options are saved in the steam client, then the shortcut should just be to launch the game with the steam client settings. If you change your launch options in the client then the shortcut will handle the launch per your new settings.

i mean it kinda works but i still have to go to my library and select stream each time i launch it, so kinda pointless to use it as streaming when u gotta stream from steam first, does anyone know a way to create a STREAMING shortcut? if not, please don't waste my time man
On my computer, the steam client saves my launch options. Every time i click the desktop shortcut it streams automatically.
wait what how i want to know

is it because the game is uninstalled on your client?
I think its because the games aren't installed locally, yes.

You can also create a seperate account just for streaming, and add it as if it were your child's account. That way all the games it has access to are streaming only. This way is buggy though.

Loads of icon packs available on the internet.

Hah, I figured as much. Just ran into your post this morning while having the same issue. Certainly someone else will also run into the same troubles and hopefully this will help :D

Fair enough
I'd like to add to this that if you want to do this and have the same icon, you can find the game's .exe file and open it with 7-zip. search around for .ico files and copy them out. choose the one you like and copy that to the computer you're creating the link on and use "change icon" dialog on the link to choose this icon file. works great.
