Shredder ( born Oroku Saki ) is a supervillain in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird . Along with the Turtles, Shredder debuted in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 ( May 1984). He has appeared in all subsequent projects, serving as the archenemy of the Turtles and Splinter .

Oroku Saki is a martial artist and the leader of the Foot Clan , a criminal syndicate made up of ninjas, gangsters, and scientists loyal to him. Shredder's backstory varies depending on the comic/cartoon/movie in which he appears. The original Shredder was Splinter's archenemy, who swore vengeance on him for the death of his master, Hamato Yoshi . To this end, he trained the four Mutant Ninja Turtles in ninjutsu . Splinter's students defeated Shredder, but Oroku Saki's legacy lives on in the form of his associates, whom the Turtles later encountered .

In 2009, Shredder was ranked 39th on IGN's list of "100 Greatest Comic Book Villains"
