AV1 Encoding Support
On newer graphics cards AV1 encoding is supported in hardware, which drastically reduces the file sizes even with high bitrate recording. It would be awesome if Steam can support that.

Agreed, AV1 should be an advanced option for those of us running supported graphics hardware from AMD, Intel and NVIDIA. I understand H264 support is much more widespread, even more so than H265, but let us deal with the trade offs of using a newer codec.
Def needed.
We should be able to:
1. Select GPU (Ie, AMD, or NVidia, or ARC) for HW Encoder
2. Select Encoder type (ie H264, HEVC or AV1)
3. also set x264 software encode speed for higher quality compression at cost of CPU

+1 I don't know if there are royalties and valve hasn't implemented it yet, AV1 Encoding should be there for any video recording feature that comes out nowadays

+1! recording and saving in AV1 for those with the hardware, while allowing clips to be shared in h264/hevc/etc ofc

There is a misconception here. File sizes across all codecs if the bitrate is the same will be the same size. For e.g. 10mbps bitrate for 1 minute file size would always be 75MB or so. The thing about modern codecs like AV1 is better compression. You can get same quality as a 50mbps h264 with only 25mbps av1.

AV1 has no licensing fee unlike H265.

Allow Encoders to be changed. I have no idea of what Encoder it's using by default, AV1 is the superior enocding solution. I've used the Flatpak: GPU Screen Recorder & AV1 is night and day difference.

12Mbps would look like 3-4Mbps on AV1.

Implement the feature or the option to change the codec in settings, like you allow for Remote Play("HVEC Video").

Actually remove "HVEC Video" from Remote Play and replace it w/AV1 while you're at it.

Please add AV1 and 10 bit color support valve! Would also love 5.1 surround sound recording too!
+1. Need to make use of my glorious new Arc card. Replay buffer in OBS is far clunkier.
