As a consequence of the Age of Instability, the Republic has been shattered. there are few worlds clinging onto the old system, most fleeing the restrains that have kept humanity togheter for almost a thousand years. they are fleeing central power to gain independence and many such struggles have left the military in a large, un-cordinated mess, where they have no authority over their supply bases or shipyards, now in the hands of ultra powerful planets or corporations who are now building their own fleets to "defend" against all aggressors, and possibly project aggression against others too, if the situation allows it.

like a city without police, militias form and bandits roam around the streets, and a state of chaos reigns.

this is The Fracture, and it is about to rip the once solid, safe foundations of mankinds future into pieces.

since the war with the Jelkalans are over, the Republic navy has looked through its classes and scrapped 2 outright, 3 is quickly being replaced, and 4 new designs are taking the stage.

the two scrapped are the Queen cruiser, due to its lack of protection and its lack of use if hit by a EMP, and the Enterprise Carrier, which cost the navy a hefty amount of money and yet delivered nothing. all they did was being imposing, but once in a fight they were very poor ships.

the three ships being replaced are the cruisers Verdict and Coldra classes, as well as the King Battlecruiser. the cruisers are very old and have served faithfully and are being scrapped of old age. the Verdict class is the oldest one still in use and therefore wont prove very effective against anything. the Coldra do still have some use, but is quickly being outdated as well. the King, however, is the 2nd oldest ship in the entire fleet, and since the Verdict is scrapped, the King is now the oldest class still in production.

this part of the Neptune story takes place between Part 1 and 2, just after the war with the Jelkalans is over, but before the Faith and the Republic have come in contact with each other. this time is a dangerous one, as the Republic and the Jelkalan navies, the two largest known, were decimated. the Jelkalan armada was destroyd to 94%, where the Republic fleet lost 40% of their fleet. this means that piracy and criminal acts in space are running rampage across the systems. trade has turned from very profitable to the riskiest venture anyone can undertake. there are hardly enough military vessels around to even patrol the outer border rims, and the thousands of trade routes are left un-supervised by the military for years possibly before a destroyer is sent along the route. this is not a time of peace. this is a time of piracy, of looting and destruction. this is the Age of Instability.
