Community servers have historically been such a core component to Counter Strike and many other source games. Before matchmaking and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ servers these community servers were effectively the only way to play online. It forced people to pick a server with rules, members, mods, and maps they liked. People became regulars to a server and often found a community to feel a part of.
Community servers like VPP have become increasingly rare. There are none remaining on the west coast & possibly in the whole of the US. VPP was one of the last. It was a place I found when I was incredibly alone, emotionally vulnerable, ashamed of my past, and afraid for my future.
I will never forget the kind and honest people who also called themselves a part of this community. I wish I knew why community servers like this have disappeared. In the end it doesn't matter I suppose, the experience of being a part of it all was enough.
