I tried watching the Clannad anime but found it boring... is the VN much better?
Hey guys. Despite being a male, I'm a big fan of shoujo anime, as well as slice of life. Some of my favorite anime include: Kimi Ni Todoke, Ao Haru Ride, Kare Kano, Chihayafuru, Suzumiya Haruhi and Nodame Cantabile. My full list can be found here: http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Kelvets?&order=4

Yet, I watched the first 3 episodes of Clannad and had to force myself to continue, so boring it was. I watched 3 more and gave up. Even many people saying "the first season is very slow, it gets really good on the second" haven't managed to convince me to sit through another 18 episodes of that torture just to get to the good parts.
Yet, seeing what a following this series has, it must be worth it after all. So do tell me: is the VN less boring? If so, should I play the original VN instead (so I can get the sex scenes)? Should I point a gun to my own head and force myself through the anime? WHAT SHOULD I DO?!?!

P.S: I do enjoy VNs. I loved Katawa Shoujo, for instance.

First thing first: There is no sex scene in Clannad VN

The VN can be kinda boring for u too because u need to pass trough all the girls to get the after life with Nagisa

For instance is your tipical Visual Novel with funny, sad and twist along the story with a interisting aura of mistery toward the strange dreams the protagonist have

PS: I suck in English but I believe u can understant what I wrote. I hope :pbbg_yuzuha:

I know the Steam version doesn't have sex scenes, I meant the original japanese version. I could find a fan translation for that.
There is no sex at all, even in the original and stuff

It's true about the first season being kind of slow. Only the last few episodes are really good and the second season is the true tearcoster ride.

I have a mind to read episode summaries for each episode of the first season, to learn the characters' backgrounds, until I notice a dramatic development happening, and start to watch from there. What do you think?

Fuko’s story in the anime was also very slow for me but I kept with it and was very happy I did. I recommend taking it a few episodes at a time and just enjoy the ride as it does pick up. :happy_creep:

As for the sex scenes those are only in the expansion/dlc "Tomoyo after: It's a wonderful life" which is a continuation of Tomoyo’s route. An english release has been announced for this but it's not yet out.

I've seen both seasons 11 times (with absolutely no distractions; and two of those times were with my mom!), though I absolutely understand what you've felt. After watching the first season, I liked it, but I didn't *love* it. A couple months after watching the first season, I watched the second. It was during this that I became attached to Clannad. Even then, I wouldn't say I fully enjoyed it until my second time watching both seasons. There are so many intricacies that you miss by only watching it a few times, that even on my 11th time watching it I noticed minute details that I missed the first 10 times.

My advice: fight through the "boringness" of it and watch both seasons through to the end. You'll be glad you did. Especially if you love shoujo (Clannad helped me discover my love for shoujo anime). The way I often describe it to my friends is, the first season is entirely exposition, and its sole purpose is to familiarize you with the characters and the setting. While there are certainly some climactic moments in the first season, I feel they were put there to develop your relationship with each character. And the second season is what really capitalizes on these bonds which makes it so emotional.

Eleven! Damn. That's, like, 8 times more than I've ever re-watched any series or movie, not considering when I was a kid. I guess I'm just not that kind of person anymore :P

I find most of the characters mildly irritating so far, especially that woman who owns the bakery (Nagisa's mother iirc?) with her overdramatizations. The "jokes" are quite poor and pretty random (I cringed at the "mastered shooting juice up the nose" achievement thingy at the beginning of episode 6, for example) and character interactions in general are somewhat awkward. I don't know for how much longer I'll be able to stand it.

I don't know much about what the general populous looks for in anime/VNs. I, for one, don't really find any appeal in sexual or harem themes. But nonetheless I absolutely loved all of Key's anime (except Charlotte, which I'm gonna pretend doesn't exist) because somehow I find myself empathising strongly with the characters' feelings and experiences. It's all about dem feels and avoiding reality innit.

Clannad was slow to start. The Fuuko arc was unusually dull, but if you take it easy and make it past the first arc without forcing yourself so much that you develop a strong distaste it will be well worth it in my opinion. From the second arc and especially through After Story it's easily one of the most intensely emotional anime I've ever come across.

But if that's not what you're looking for in the anime then I'd find it hard to recommend it. Personally I found it well worth the time and I've rewatched it at least 5 times in less than a year in spite of all the 62 other anime I've been binge-watching.

I'm not sure what to expect of the VN. I just bought it and waiting on it to finish downloading. My frist Key VN at last, I'm excited :D

P.S.: I also echo Berserkguard's thoughts on this

I've found a way to make watching it much, much better! I'm learning French, so I went and found a site that streams the anime with French subtitles. As most of my cognitive power is now being employed in deciphering the subtitles, the poor jokes and such are not bothering me nearly as much! xD As an added bonus, I seem to be absorbing more of what the characters say, remembering the story better. Yay for language learning without actually studying!

I think what made the first season tolerable was because I was in high school and Tomoya was relateable. Being a college student, now I feel a disconnection. I guess the same can be said about many high school series.

But I thought that high school never ended?!

Honestly, if you didn't get the "feels" out of Clannad, it's probably not your thing. Have you tried any other Key anime? They all have the same feel, and if it doesn't touch you the way it does so many of us, there's nothing wrong with that.

If Key is "Kyoto Animation", then yes, I like Suzumiya Haruhi and InuYasha, but not Kyoukai no Kanata.

Key is the studio that created Clannad and the other visual novels he was referring to. It's not an abbreviation for anything the name is simply Key[en.wikipedia.org]. They also make the soundtrack for those VNs and most of the anime based on them.
