you do know i have my own guide on doing it?

It is meant for rpg maker games though, not non-steam games.
to OP: If you add a game as a non-Steam game to you Steam library, I think you can take screenshots normally with F12. I know I could with Dragon Age: Origins, which is an Origin game.
honestly, the only method i use with games is print screen and artwork. IDK how to do it even with sims 3...
Might be worth trying to disable the Origin overlay as well, as it might conflict with the Steam one.
Good idea about steam overlay and origin overlay not getting along with each other. I had to do this with uplay overlay because when i was taking pictures of ANNO 2270 it actually prevented me from taking screenshots. Ill try those later. Thanks for the suggestions.
