I'd say the potential to have content spoiled or cheesed by seasoned players is high and there's some great content in this game. So team up with some noobs or go it solo, IMO, if you care about such things.
Clay is easy - orange patches near shallow (think swamp) water. You have to explore the yard and go further and further out to find stuff. One could say the yard is a bit more intimidating solo than it might be with a crew.
Through various updates and equipment/mutation changes this is now far less of a problem than it was for solo players back then.
I play on Whoa difficulty and I do NOT recommend that for a first time playthrough. Mild or medium is fine.
