Keyboard Controls during QTEs?
Unlike many others, I'm not just going to complain about the mouse and keyboard controls being garbage, they aren't that bad, though they're definitely clunky. However, while I've figured out just about everything else, there are a handful of problems I have in QTEs. The combat mouse swipes I'm having no trouble with, it took me all of a minute to get through the CIA melee combat training. However, there's another portion of the CIA section I am having problems with. The written test features a button prompt that looks like a horizontal double headed arrow in the bottom left part of a circle, and I have no idea what that's supposed to represent on PC. It looks very similar (in my eyes) to something I've seen in playthroughs of the console versions, which, if I'm correct, usually had to do with shaking or rotating the controller, but, as I said I have no idea what to do here.

I spent the last hour combing through all the complaints and rants about how the controls suck, and encountered many who said they had no problems playing once they got over the clunkiness, but none made any reference to this specific problem. And when I say all, I mean I went through all 18 pages of threads (ignoring the ones in languages I don't speak and ones that didn't reference the control scheme). Searching normal search engines also accomplished nothing. The only substantive advice I've found is to switch to a controller or buy the game for console, but that comes with a glaring issue. I'm not going to shell out for either of those to play one game, no matter how long I've wanted to play it, it isn't worth that much. Buying it on sale for ten dollars? I've gotten more than ten dollars worth of enjoyment just watching other people play, but buying a console for several hundred, or a decent controller for around a hundred is both out of my price range, and goes against all of my sense of rationality.

So please, if anyone knows what this, and any of the other more opaque QTE controls are, please explain them here. I hope that this can serve as a repository for any tips on how to work with these controls, because quite honestly, we all know the developers aren't going to be improving them, they haven't done so for even their most popular games' ports, and while I personally enjoy the lore and themes of this one, I'm aware it's far from their most popular. People deserve the chance to enjoy this game, despite the failings of it's creators.

I feel like the only one but I personally had zero problems with the mouse controls, and the keyboard controls are perfect, in my opinion. I've gone through the game twice with k&m, one was in solo co-op for the achievement (Jodie on controller, Aiden on keyboard & mouse) and another playthrough with the keyboard & mouse throughout just to see the problems. I had zero issues, it worked great. Everything is set-up so the keys you have to hold, press, or tap, are close to WASD and the Mouse, so you don't have to pull your hand away from WASD just to hit Right-Shift, y'know. And they are set-up in a way where even if you hold a key, it doesn't stop you from reaching another to tap or press it. I think the default keybinds are wonderful.

As far as I know, and it's been a while since I've played, the keys are close to WASD as previously mentioned. From memory, the keys are numerical buttons 1,2,3,4, Space (square with a line at the bottom) and Left-Shift (L with an arrow pointing up in the bottom right). I don't recall ever tapping Space or Left-Shift, they were mostly used for holding like in the test.

The buttons in the written test in the Training chapter is you hold Left-Shift and then click+drag in the direction it shows in the circle. If it doesn't show a key in the circle and it instead shows an arrow, it will always be a click+drag prompt.

Haven't played the game but my first guess would be rapid left-right movements with the mouse. Possibly requiring a minimum distance.

Thanks for the response. Sadly that was one of the first things I tried. Along with up and down, moving in a semi-circle, full circle, or multiple, and the all of those with both mouse buttons held down.

Thank you! I had come to the conclusion it had to be done combination rather than just a single button press or hold, but I was lost at figuring out what the combination was. Like I said, I went through every thread on here that I thought might have anything to do with this, so I'm glad to finally have an answer, and your answer is comprehensive enough to fulfill my secondary propose with this. Thank you again, hopefully I'm not the only one this will help.

How did you manage to pass the lab level where all there was just arrows pointing a direction to dodge.
