COMMON ISSUES AND HOW TO SOLVE THEM!
Please let us know if we're missing anything here and we'll add it!

HOW TO SOLVE MOST ISSUES
Please do these steps first, regardless of the problem you are experiencing!

  • Make sure you are playing the latest version of the game! The latest version as of July 13, 2021, is v2.34
At the top-left of the boot-up screen you see when you start the game (after the logos) you will see the following text:
    HypnOS -- v### (c) 1999 Merchantsoft
The v### is where you can find the installed version.

  • Verify your game files integrity (instructions below for Steam - if you are playing on something other than Steam, try uninstalling and reinstalling the game.
    1. Steam Library
    2. Right-click on Hypnospace Outlaw
    3. Click on "Properties"
    4. Click on "Local Files"
    5. Click on "Verify integrity of game files..."
You can also try uninstalling and reinstalling from Steam as well.

  • Try disabling all downloaded mods. Downloading and playing with mods can risk breaking your save file, depending on the content of the mod.

  • Try starting a game new file and see if the issue persists.

  • If you're using a RAM Booster/Game Booster/System Booster (e.g. Razer Cortex) try disabling it! If you can disable it for a single app find Hypnospace Outlaw (which may be listed as "nwjs") and disable that one, otherwise disable it system-wide while you're playing the game.

  • Mouse or other controls acting funky? If you have a controller plugged in or connected (Xbox 360 controller, racing wheel, etc), try disconnecting it!

Visual Issues
Black screen, issues playing videos, other weird graphical problems, and bad performance can often be solved here

  • Update your graphics card drivers!

  • Set your graphics card to "Performance Mode" (or equivalent) if the option exists. These settings vary per graphics card manufacturer, but generally you can set the mode per application. Make sure Hypnospace Outlaw (which may be listed as "nwjs") is set to Performance Mode.

  • Many laptops have a dual-graphics card setup, e.g. both an integrated card and a discrete card and can switch between them to improve battery life or performance. Figure out which one your laptop is using and switch to the discrete card. This may be listed as "gaming mode" or similar, depending on your system.

  • Try the instructions here: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1044213/
On step 3, click "Browse" and find Hypnospace, which is installed here by default:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Hypnospace Outlaw\HypnOS.exe
When added it may show up as "nwjs" or "NODE" or something similar in the list. Click the "Options" button and choose High Performance, and Save.

If you'd like to run the game in fullscreen and your screen resolution causes the game to run within a black box, try the following:
  • If on Windows, check your "Scale and layout" settings within Windows settings, make sure it is set to 100% for the screen you are playing the game on (Windows Settings -> System -> Display -> Scale and layout).

  • Change your resolution to something that scales by integer to the game's native resolution (480x270). The recommended resolution is 1920x1080.

  • If that doesn't work, try running the game with "Non-Integer Fullscreen Scaling" enabled. Warning: this might look bad!
    1. Go into the in-game BIOS (either hold B during initial startup, or click the BIOS button at the bottom-right on the main menu)
    2. Check the "Enable Non-Integer Fullscreen Scaling" box - I do not recommend messing with the advanced settings below
    3. Click Exit at the top-right

Audio Issues
Music slowing down, other weird audio problems

  • Oddly enough sometimes audio problems can be solved by following the instructions in the Visual Issues section above, try that!

  • Try running the game in the experimental "Aggressive Audio Memory Management" mode.
    1. Go into the in-game BIOS (either hold B during initial startup, or click the BIOS button at the bottom-right on the main menu)
    2. Check the "Aggressive Audio Memory Management" box
    3. Click Exit at the top-right

Issues with Hypii Text-To-Speech
Hypii's voice is supported on all platforms except for Linux (sorry folks).

  • Make sure Hypii is enabled in the in-game Settings.
    1. Open your save file and click the Settings gear icon
    2. Click the Audio tab
    3. Un-check the "Robot Language Only" checkbox
    4. Click Apply and close Settings

  • Hypii uses your computer's built-in Text to Speech (TTS) system. If you do not hear his voice, you may need to install or enable text to speech in your computer's OS settings.

  • Try a different voice for Hypii and see if it works:
    1. Go into the in-game BIOS (either hold B during initial startup, or click the BIOS button at the bottom-right on the main menu)
    2. Change the "Custom Hypii Voice" value to another number (Default is 0)
    3. You can listen to a preview of this TTS voice here
    4. Click Exit at the top-right

Consistent Crashing on Switch
  • There is an odd issue with the Soundscape Generator that can cause crashes.
    1. Open the Soundscape Generator app
    2. Click the On/Off button and switch it to "OFF"
Note: There is no way to uninstall this app in-game, the most you can do is turn it off and hide the icon in the Launcher (treasure chest)

Progression Soft-Locked
Are you nearing the end of the game and have been waiting for a follow-up email from Samantha for way too long? Try this:

  1. Enable the dev console in your in-game BIOS settings from the main menu
  2. Load up your save file
  3. Access the console using the ~ or ` or § button on your keyboard, depending on your region
  4. Copy+paste or type in the following command into the console (case-sensitive) and hit Enter/Return:
    progress:CriticalPathStarted,0

Wait about a minute and you should start receiving emails and stuff relevant to this part of the game (you will probably receive at least one duplicate email).

If that does not work, you may have to also input these commands into the console (you can copy and paste the entire string of commands then hit Enter/Return):

progress:endgameprog1,0|progress:endgameprog1b,0|progress:endgameprog1c,0|progress:endgameprog1d,0|progress:endgameprog1e,0|progress:endgameprog1f,0

Let me know if you still can't progress in the game and I'll see what else we can do!

Save Files Missing
Did you just download the 2024 "Saves and Surprises" update, and now your save files are missing? If you previously were using "Portable Mode", you'll need to go to the in-game BIOS settings (via the main menu, bottom-right corner) and re-enable it. If your save files are still missing please reply to this thread!

Where do I find my save files?
If Portable Mode (in the in-game BIOS) is enabled, you will find your save files in a "saves" folder in the game's install folder.

Otherwise, your saves will be found here:
WINDOWS: %USERPROFILE%/AppData/Roaming/Tendershoot/HypnOS/ MAC: ~/Library/Application Support/Tendershoot/HypnOS/ LINUX: ~/.local/Tendershoot/HypnOS/

Previous location for save files (pre-v2.5):
WINDOWS: %USERPROFILE%/Tendershoot/HypnOS/
MAC: ~/Tendershoot/HypnOS/
LINUX: ~/Tendershoot/HypnOS/

Recommended Steam Deck Settings
Weird controls? Visuals don't fill the screen? Try these:

  1. Open Hypnospace settings on your Steam Deck by navigating to your Library, choosing Hypnospace, clicking the gear [⚙] icon, then clicking Properties
  2. Set Game Resolution to 1080p:
General -> Game Resolution -> Choose 1920x1080 from the drop-down menu
  3. Set Compatibility to native Linux:
Compatibility -> Choose "Steam Linux Runtime 1.0 (scout)" from the drop-down menu
(you may also have to enable "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" above)
  4. Set controller to recommended settings:
Controller -> Controller Configurator (link near the top of the menu) -> Current Button Layout, choose either the Official Layout or "Hypnospace on Steam Deck" from the Community Layouts tab

Save files missing?
  • If you previously used Portable Mode, you'll need to re-enable it from the in-game BIOS settings menu.
  • If your save files are not cloud-syncing, please note that Portable Mode is not compatible with cloud saves. If you want to start syncing your portable saves, you'll need to copy them over to the non-portable save folder. See "Where do I find my save files?" above.

Did you ever figure out how to fix it SavageRationale?

Are you playing the latest version from Steam? Or did you get the game elsewhere? That should be fixed.

Playing the latest version, on steam and the issues mentioned here still occur. https://gtm.you1.cn/app/844590/discussions/0/1678063648156129096/

Hey, the black screen problem still persists. I updated my drivers and set the game to high performance, it didn't work

Do you have a laptop with a dual graphics card? It could be running on the low-powered, integrated card, by mistake.

I do, but weirdly none of the fix suggestions worked! Setting launch options to --disable-gpu eventually sort of worked. Now all the text is black though, do you know why?

Yeah you don't want to disable the GPU. There should be a way to force your laptop to use the high-powered discrete GPU (either globally or specifically for Hypnospace), that's what you want to find. Every manufacturer have different settings for that kind of thing so it'll be very difficult for me to help you directly with yours, I'd recommend Googling it, something like: "force [manufacturer] laptop to use discrete gpu on specific software"

This also might help:

I think there's a bug on my save file. #59 in Nov 26 and #43 in Dec 31 won't archive and have confirmed multiple times that I have been to those pages, every guide I've seen says it's WITW ChitChat. Is there anything I can do to fix this without starting over on a new save? It's been a year and I am willing to try save file manipulation, I'm getting very desperate.

99% of HAP guides are wrong, based on previous versions of the game or just simply in error.

Edit: you might want to try this tool, it doesn't have pages listed by ID# but does list every single page in the game and how they interlink:

So not sure why, but after this most recent update, the game doesn't boot up on Steam Deck (Both in hand held or desktop mode) Tried uninstalling and also checking the games files but that didn't work either.

Did you try the fixes in the Steam Deck section at the bottom of the list here? You might also try restarting your Deck from the Linux desktop.

Tell me more about your setup - Windows, Mac, Linux? Do you have the game installed in an odd location? Do you have any unusual tweaks on your PC, e.g. changes to environment variables, etc?
