Tips for a Happy Grimdark Multiplayer Experience
1) You will die. Accept this. Make peace with this. Fight to the bitter end, true to the spirit of the franchise, knowing that:

2) Mission failure still gives you xp, while

3) Quitting gives you NOTHING.

4) The plasma cannon is bad. In games with no friendly fire, it diminishes broodlord encounters to a minor distraction, and in games with friendly fire, it diminishes everyone's health to a minor puddle on the floor. Try the Spear instead. Pewpew.

5) If you're joining games because you can't or won't host, it is perfectly acceptable to enquire as to the rules and/or difficulty. It is not acceptable to criticize the choice.

6) If you're hosting games, be a good host: Let people know if you're planning on only running one map and then quitting, wait a moment at the end of mission screen before quitting, and provide hot beverages as needed.

7) Thou shalt press the medic button once, and only once. Spamming it does not take time off the apothecary's cooldowns. In situations where it genuinely appears that the apothecary hasn't noticed your plight, you may consider pressing the button once more, apologetically.

8) If you play as assault, you are expecting other teammates to take out turrets and hybrids. Nobody forced you to pursue your knightly fantasies - keep this in mind before complaining.

9) If the room you've just entered has Tyranid symbols in it, locking the door means you've just locked yourself inside a room with Tyranids. Good job!

10) If the room you've just entered has another door up ahead, and your teammates have already gone through it, don't lock the first door: Catch up to the others, and lock the second door.

11) If you're transitioning from a narrow corridor to a big open space, and you're locking the door to the narrow corridor behind you, you've just locked yourself in a big open space with a potential Broodlord. Extra special good job!

12) Shoot the bell. Do it. You know you want to.

13) If nobody is visibly leading, it means your teammates are sheep. Pick a direction and move before you all die.

14) If the map turns fuzzy, shoot the empty corridor ahead of you. If you hit nothing, shoot the empty corridor behind you. If you hit nothing, YOU ARE ABOUT TO DIE. BLOCK.

15) Block.

16) Don't stand still. A single step to the left could mean the difference between a spike through the face, and a spike through the arm. You can lose an arm. You can lose both arms. You only have one face.

17) Don't be that guy who steps in front of a teammate who is already shooting at a target, to shoot at that target. Nobody likes that guy.

18) Do not turn your back on the enemy, unless your teammates are covering you.

19) Watch the map.

20) Watch the map.

21) Watch the map.

22) Watch the map.

23) Watch the map.

24) Your teammates are now in a different room because you didn't watch the map, and you're going to have to turn around and sprint to catch up: See point 18.

25) One of your teammates is now dead because he didn't watch the map, and didn't notice that all of the little green arrows were pointing in one direction, and not at the motion detected in the corridor behind them.

26) All of your teammates are now dead because you didn't watch the map, and then somebody else didn't watch the map, and then the last survivor managed to lock himself in a room full of Tyranids and you're all now staring at the mission failure screen... remember points 1 to 3.

27) You don‘t have to kill every single Tyranid by yourself. Trust your teammates, usually they can deal with the threat they are facing, however all will get killed, if you aren‘t guarding your side of the group.

28) Noone likes the flamer, except the flamer boy. I only suggest the flamer for showing an excited flamer boy how it feels to be blind.

29) If you play an assault with a Thunderhammer on NM with FF on, after wiping out your whole squad with one hit of your Mjolnir, never say something like: „Learn to play, keep your distance.“ Otherwise you have 3 possible teammates less for future sessions, quite hard with that small playerbase.

30) Stay together or die alone!
This thread should be pinned.

31) If you're at the tail of your team's formation, priority is keeping up with the others. Shoot while walking backward and use your map to navigate. The accuracy increase you get for standing still isn't worth getting separated or slowing down everyone else.

32) If you play an assault with a Thunderhammer on NM with FF on and teammates are nearby, SHIELDBASH or BLOCK. Or alternatively, Deep Strike away.

33) If you're team's Apothecary is using the lightning claws, count him as an Assault, an additional Apoth with the Narthecium WILL be needed.

why do i have the Baz Luhrmann song going round my head now?..... great post

34) Ammo needs to be reloaded - do not all start firing at the same time

35) Position and Spacing - do not all bunch up together - Why have two guns when you have three? - 2 brothers side by side looks good for the school photo but blocks forward line of sight for the brother behind - step back/forward to each other and brother behind can fire through the gap as well
36) the hulk is a dark and moody place and it can get hard to see the bloody nids.
the bioscanner sight realy helps you out as the nids will be bright orange when you zoom (and it even highlight turrets)
28) 1st amendment: if you are using a flamer, fire in short bursts and wait a second so the Damage Over Time can do its magic. You'll do much more damage. One short burst plus its DoE effect will kill a small stealer, two burst all medium stealers, three bursts a warrior. Scythe and Broodlord: RUN
28) 2nd amendment: to stop annoying your teammates, take the rearguard position. Don't throw your flames all over the team because it blocks their sight.
37) There are generally two approaches to making your way through a space hulk: 1. move through at a steady pace, trusting your formation to cover all angles; 2. hole up in a defensible position, kill everything until the spawn ends, and then you'll have 10 seconds or so of downtime to move before the next spawns come. Method 2 is safer, but a lot slower. Teams may employ a mixture of the two, see what approach the rest of the team is taking and stick to it.

38) Formation is everything. You want your front 2 to have enough firepower and/or tankiness to push through a horde, your 3rd spot for a utility / healer class who can float to whichever side needs help, and a rear guard who can kill fast enough to keep swarms at bay (if not push through them himself). As you move and cover the angles, stick to this formation - if you run out of position to 'help' or chase kills, you've left a gap for the nids to swarm in.

39) Flamer is a bad weapon for the front, as your team can't aim through it, you don't have the range for turrets/shooters, and you can't see when enemies are leaping at you / spitting, so you can't see when it's safe to push forwards. Conversely, it's great for a sole rearguard, as you can safely DOT any number of nids to death whilst moving away, and you mostly get melee enemies only at your rear. (just saw your amendment cszolee79, glad you said it too!)

40) Melee builds are great for front, with some backup for ranged enemies. They're not great for the rear, as you have to run towards enemies - and away from your team - to engage.

Plasma cannon is still viable on ff with the lowered aoe and careful aiming, and aiming at normal nids becomes an actual challenge. Fine to use if your team lacks any anti-BL.

Oh man, these 2 so much. The number of times I see people welding every door in sight, and get swarmed in the process...if it doesn't reduce the number of angles you have to watch, then it's pointless to weld.
These are all great tips that I've also picked up on since starting this game. Sadly the playerbase isn't huge and I think some new players get discouraged transferring to FF-ON/NM which of course where the Emperor demands we purge! I would advise learning weapons OTHER than the Plasma, Flamer, and Hellfire (though they really are that good) because the Friendly Fire and Blinding effects it has on the team.

Tip #41) You can Block doors while walking away. (Not sure if intended) You do this by holding E and immediately walking away from the door before the door actually closes. Once you are far enough away you are free to release E and the door will continue to Block. Handy for blocking doors while on the move & keeping good pace with your team if playing rear-guard.

42) Storm Bolter Mk2 may seem weak at first, but get the armor penetration and anti-jamming perks for it ASAP. If you are able to spray a Nid's head (watch the tracers, NOT your crosshair) full-auto it will pop like a melon (even on NM)!

43) Redeemer shotgun is a great gun even without upgrades, doesn't get you used to staggering everything easily (for those times when you decide to try FF-NM), blinding teamates, and causing FF damage. That is, once you learn how to properly ricochet the spread.

Easy Mode (can pretty much solo) = Plasma with all upgrades (Will stagger anything, never jam, have a good Rate of Fire, and a HUGE splash radius) but it is worthless on FF and gets boring after a bit. (Try the Vengence cannon if you HAVE to play Heavy)

I feel stupid playing this game... Everybody is lvl 300-500, except me, lvl 7... I'm tempted to farm xP with just relics but 5 minute load screens end with my patience :bolter:
Level means nothing. You can upgrade a class (armor, weapon and skins) to the max in 20 levels. Furthermore, most players with ridiculously high levels used the afk exploit.

You just offended every Salamander in existence.

Oh totally. But these tips are were intended for an "at a glance" source of advice for people new to the game; if people start with the Spear, which is way more teammate friendly, then they'll probably try the low AOE mod for the cannon at some point.

The big danger is that newer players pour their first upgrades into the plasma cannon and refuse to use anything else (had a guy actually leave a game recently because he had only unlocked the plasma cannon, with the increase AOE mod)

Yeah I get you - the number of times someone joins our server (clearly marked FF ON), kill themselves with the plasma cannon, then rq...Definitely shouldn't be the first weapon they unlock.

Salamander? Ah, you mean those green flamer boys? Those guys must have a special eye filter or idk...

;)
Amusingly the IR and the bio-sensor sights helps to see through the flames in-game.
