Idek who's playing this or thinking of playing this in the year of our lord 2024 but this game got under my skin.
I also played Kasane's story as opposed to Yuito's story and played on normal difficulty, so that will impact my review.

Scarlet Nexus; the little game that couldn't.

TLDR:
Anyway so the game the wholly mediocre. Maybe give it a go on a heavy discount.
The combat was fairly fun but the length of the game and enemy design makes it lose it's charm real quick.
The story is bad. Really bad. Borderline comically bad.
And finally a warning: Play Yuito's story first. The game clearly expects you to do his story first. (Unless you want the wild ride that Kasane's story was. I couldn't stop laughing at times)


Spoiler free brief review:

The game's biggest strength is it's art direction and visual design. The characters are bland with the exception of a couple but the character and enemy designs are pretty good across the board. The enemies especially have some really unique designs that use a combination of human or animal parts mixed in with objects or technology. Just nice to look at overall.
And now the bad stuff.

The game has some really cool ideas and themes but fails to see most of them through- They also have multiple parts where they threatened to make the game good before immediately falling into anime tropes that hurt my soul. (Note: I play persona and the like so I'm primed for anime tropes in these games, but this game just uses them poorly)

The story is just incomprehensible and the game makes it very clear that you are expected to play as Yuito and play as Kasane on a subsequent playthrough. This is due to Kasane's playthrough having plot points that are just never explained or sometimes even mentioned if you don't already know the story. This is fine in theory but the game allows you to play as either, so it's dumb that the game just lets you play as either when Kasane undeniably gives you a worse first playthrough experience and is clearly designed to be played with the game's plot already in mind. If you're presenting both to me, both should be able to deliver a story of equal quality.

The combat is fairly basic. They present most of the mechanics early on and they don't really develop at all. You get introduced to a couple new abilities but that's about it. The combat is fun but repetitive. However, my biggest complaint is the enemy design. The game's combat is fundamentally flawed and slow and the later enemies really accentuate this. Later fights in the game become long and tedious, with enemies that spam stuns or large AoE attacks that are clunky to dodge and have way too much health and also never get stunned themselves. The enemy variety is abysmal and most of them deal way too much damage.

Frankly, the game was very unforgiving and I found some fights borderline impossible without using the equipment that just prevents you from dying. The final boss was a crime against all enemy design. Way too much visual noise, annoying attacks and obnoxious time padding. What a time to be alive.

So yeah, hopefully those who played Yuito's story had a better experience than me.

I would go further in depth about why specifically the story just doesn't hit at all for me but i'd be sitting here for another 5000 words.
Go buy another game or like a pack of donuts or smth instead of this

i played for 12 hours in a single session and finished with 23 hours in total, it was great :D
