TL;DR: It was... underwhelming.
Spent too much time walking between actual puzzles.
The puzzles didn't feel fun nor gave you any actual intellectual satisfaction.
Graphics were nice to look at, but also very unoptimized. VR is absolutely unplayable due to that.
Game is buggy and can get you stuck despite you solving puzzles... requiring you to save/reload so the game understands what you already did.
The story left me feeling unconcerned.

Now for more details...

I think everyone said it all: way too much backtracking, even if the game did implement some "checkpoints" and "shortcuts"... you still do an insane amount of walking. So much, in fact, that even though I'm pretty sure it's not true, I still feel like I've spent more time walking than actually solving puzzles.

Ah, the puzzles... that's what you buy that kind of games for, right ? Well, they had interesting mechanics... and then decided to not really exploit them. Most of the puzzles felt like being on the first day of a boring job moving machines. Since it's your first day, the jobs are all pretty simple... which makes them tedious instead of interesting.
Except this is a game and you're not paid for that tedium.
Also I didn't feel like I needed to use my brain to understand any of it. Most of the time, the answer was kind of obvious, but you just needed to go through the motions. No real 'aha !' moment that these types of games are played for.
I wouldn't be surprised if this game had contained a "puzzle" that consisted of having to empty a glass in a sink, then put it in a dishwasher, before you can use the now clean glass to carry another liquid... That the kind of 'obvious' it felt like.
This is... honestly it's bad. When your game is supposed to be a puzzle game, only contains a moderate amount of said puzzles, and all of them feel like busywork ? I'm sorry, I want to like that game and Cyan I do love your games in general... but this one is really bad.

The game is beautiful on desktop, which is a nice point. Absolutely scrumptious decors that you can easily look at for a time. A welcome distraction during the overly present backtracking moments. They come with a drawback, though: the game is poorly optimized and despite advertising VR, I could never make it worth playing with it.

I have a PC that has a reasonable 4060 for graphics, have no problem running any other VR games... And used to play Obduction on far lower specs too back in the day... but this was unable not to be a lagfest with constant audio cutout and jitterring images even when I was standing as still as possible. If I wasn't pretty much impervious to motion sickness, I'd have puked on the spot.

The game is also sadly riddled with bugs. During that single playthrough of 8 hours, which I'd like to remind you I spend a good chunk of walking between actual content, I faced a few issues.
I stuck myself in the decor somehow while walking between platforms - which was thankfully resolved through an option in the menu.
On one hand, it's nice that there's a safe respawn option. On the other, it's also telling that they don't know how to do collision properly if they have to resort to such a "feature" in their end product.
I also had to save and then instantly reload that save a few times because... I was stuck in a state where I had clearly solved the puzzle, but the game would not let me interact with the terminal I just unlocked for some reason ? And yet, the game had to know I had properly unlocked it since saving and reloading let me interact with it again... But it completely breaks the immersion.

And finally, the story.
Um... I'm not gonna spoil it all, but that has to be one of the most unsatisfying use of the whole "amnesiac protagonist" trope. I understand that you need your player character to be a blank slate for the person behind the screen to incarnate but... that's taking things a bit too far.
Alright I can't do it without spoilers so here goes:
You play as someone who did some bad things then got memory wiped to be manipulated. That's it. As a player, I felt completely unconcerned: I'm not the one who did bad things, and never saw them happen so why would I feel anything ? And even the character itself: since they've had their entire memory wiped, the person they were literally stopped existing right then and there. Without their memories, they're not the person who did all these things. Because of that, it's absolutely pointless for them to feel any remorse and the point of the story is rendered moot.

I loved Obduction, played Myst and Riven, and backed this game hoping for more of the same kind of immersion through puzzle but... this one was bland. I didn't feel like I was doing anything that wracked my brain, and the ending left me feeling like I just wasted 8 hours doing tedious stuff without any reward.

I do hope you learn from this and do better next game.

Played the non-VR version. It was pretty good overall. The game ran smoothly, except for portions of St. Andrew, where I had FPS dropping to the low 20's. The puzzles were a mix of not too difficult to head scratchers. Definitely had to have help on a few of them. But I wouldn't expect any less from the makers of Myst.

**Beautiful** game. The adjunct took some getting used to but by hour 3 I had no problem operating it. Underwater puzzle was kinda evil but now that I finally beat it I don't mind it so much. Looking forward to more games from Cyan
