Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Controller guide
Shadow of the Tomb Raider has built-in support for Xbox 360, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 controllers. This gives an input experience that fully mirrors the console versions of the game, has correct in-game icons for each controller type, and fully supports the rumble features of each controller. We recommend our native controller support for most users.

Alternatively we also offer the ability to use Steam Input to support other controller types and give you full remapping support for controllers.

Patch 1.0.235.3 and up: 'Auto' option explained
In Shadow of the Tomb Raider under the Options > Gamepad submenu there is a new addition to the 'Enable Steam Input' setting: 'Auto'. ‘Auto’ will support both Steam Input and native controller input, with your Steam controller settings being used to determine which will be active. ‘Off’ will ignore Steam Input, to force the native game controller support for Xbox 360, Xbox One and PS4 controllers. Please ensure your controller is not enabled in your Steam controller settings, or the game will be unable to use it. ‘On’ will force Steam Input, to allow the use of Steam Input Configurations, the Steam Controller, and other controllers supported by Steam Input. Please ensure your controller is enabled in your Steam controller settings, or the game will be unable to use it.

Issues with native controller support and Steam
An incorrect Steam configuration can cause the native controller support of the game to not be functional. To resolve this:
  • Make sure you DISABLE Steam Configuration support for Non-Steam controllers
    • You can do this by forcing it OFF in the game-specific setting. You can find this setting in Steam Big Picture mode when going to the game page under Manage Game -> Controller Options: ‘Use Steam Configuration for Non-Steam Controllers’.
    • Or by turning off the global Steam Configuration Support setting for your controller in the steam client. You can find this setting in Steam under Settings -> Controller Settings.
NOTE: this will affect Steam Configuration support for other games!
  • Make sure you DISABLE Steam Input in the game by starting the game and going to Options -> Gamepad -> Steam Input = either AUTO or OFF.
    • You might need to switch to mouse and keyboard to be able to interact with the game.
  • If you are experiencing issues, try to disconnect any other controllers that might be connected to your system.

Using Steam Input
If you want to use the Steam Controller or use Steam Configuration for Non-Steam Controllers:
  • Make sure you ENABLE Steam Configuration support for Non-Steam controllers
    • You can do this by forcing it ON in the game-specific setting. You can find this setting in Steam Big Picture mode when going to the game page under Manage Game -> Controller Options: ‘Use Steam Configuration for Non-Steam Controllers’.
    • Or by turning ON the global Steam Configuration Support setting for your controller in the steam client. You can find this setting in Steam under Settings -> Controller Settings.
NOTE: this will affect Steam Configuration support for other games!
  • Make sure you ENABLE Steam Input in the game by starting the game and going to Options -> Gamepad -> Steam Input = either AUTO or ON.
    • You might need to switch to mouse and keyboard to be able to interact with the game.

Playing via Steam Link or In-Home Streaming
To use any controllers to play the game via Steam Link or In-Home Streaming, use the Steam Controller or use Steam Configuration for Non-Steam Controllers.
