To clarify, the game will show PS4 button prompts when ANY DirectInput (non-Xbox) controllers are connected. The PS4 controller is, by design, a DirectInput controller. You naturally shouldn't need to do or get anything else to have the game show you PS button prompts.
Check what controllers are being recognised by Windows by searching "Set up USB game controllers" in your Start menu. Make sure it is clearly showing that it isn't an Xbox controller.
It might also be worth going into Steam Big Picture and check what Steam is recognising your controller as.
That did it. It's really strange how that's what would solve the problem but at least it's working now. Thanks a ton for the help.
EDIT: While the controller is working in the field and showing the PS4 Button Prompts when the "Playstatoin Controller" option is turned off in Big Picture mode, the controller doesn't work in battles. This ♥♥♥♥ is so ridiculous. There's no excuse for it.
If I turn the option back on after restarting the game, the button prompts go back to Xbox but I can at least use the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing while fighting. I'm done wasting my time and energy trying to get the correct button prompts to show up on this trash port. Looks like I'll have to live with the Xbox button prompts.
Had I purchased this on Steam (I got it on sale at Gamesplanet for $11.99) I would have asked for a refund. The developers don't deserve a dime for such a lazy effort. If you're reading this before purchasing, don't bother. It's not worth it.
The easiest way to verify this is by going into the Artes page, and make whoever is in character slot 1 be on Auto, and whoever is in slot 2 be on Manual/Semi-Auto.
You can change the assignment in the settings menu afterwards.
To add to this, if you're still having problems what worked for me was to unpair any extra controllers that may not currently be connected to your computer. Windows kinda has controllers in set slots and this game will seemingly picks up controllers that aren't active and assign them to player slots.
1. disable steam input, but don't connect the controller (dualsense) to your pc/laptop yet
2. launch the game
3. connect dualsense when the game starts to your pc/laptop (when the display starts to become white after steam and game logo disappear)
