How important is the non lethal approch?

The stealth mechanics in this game seem a little finicky, which is fine it's older than dirt, I expect it. But they seem to be reinforcing the idea that not killing everyone, is the right call to make. Is this one of those games where I should be striving for pacifism or is it ok to crack a couple skulls? can I crack all the skulls? what's the ratio?

ok coool, thank you. I was stacking up a worrying large bodycount and I wasn't sure if this was going to be a dishonored type situation where I just lose because I killed too many people

It's not like Thief 2 or something, you can just go ahead and kill everyone. That said, the stealth mechanics are actually more consistent than you think and it's possible to clear the "naughty, naughty" section of the game without killing anyone quite reliably.

Paul will ♥♥♥♥♥ about it in the early game but after that nobody cares.

As above answers. Some npc's will make snarky comments is all.

I do advocate a stealth approach for some parts of the game though. It (arguably) makes for a more fun experience. Tranq darts in particular is one of the most useful weapons imo.
