Can not run
I get a "Failed to find Steam" error and can't run this. For a while I would have to restart the computer and then get it to run. Great game but a fail on Steam. Now I will try and get my money back. Will update how that goes.

Tech support contacted me a couple days after I requested help and the fix was easy and it worked. Well done Steam.

This is a great game and now I don't have to worry about losing the CD this time!

Me, too. What a bummer. :( I'll have to see what can be done about this.

It seems like it is a common problem but the fix is easy and it works. With the potential drawbacks of steam it is < than buying another cd of questionable origin on the internet. And I don't have to ♥♥♥♥ around with the discs and lets be honest - 95% of us play while conneted to the internets. I must have bought starcraft 3 times and either lost the discs or upgraded and didnt have the key, etc etc.

Steam isnt perfect but imo if your not hacking or going to bit torrent sites and doing stupid ♥♥♥♥ it is rock steady.

Please just say how they fixed it. I put in a ticket a week ago with this same problem and they haven't talked with me yet.

I had the same problem and there's a really, REALLY simple fix:

Basically the problem is that the game can't find 'Steam.dll'. Well, let's help it out! :)

1. Navigate to your Steam folder, which on my PC is located under:
Computer -> Local Disk (C:) -> Program Files (x86) -> Steam

2. Inside that Steam folder you will find a file called 'Steam.dll'. (This is what the game is trying to find)

3. COPY 'Steam.dll'

4. Now we have to find the folder for Hitman 2: Silent Assassin. This is where we are going to place our copy of 'Steam.dll'.

So, inside your Steam folder, find another folder called 'steamapps'. Then, 'common'. This is where Steam store the program files for your non-Valve games (like Hitman). Locate the folder entitled 'Hitman 2 Silent Assassin', and open it.

5. Almost done! Now that we're in the Hitman 2 Folder, PASTE the 'Steam.dll' file (that one we copied earlier). Now, when Steam tries to start Hitman 2, it will find this .dll file that it could not previously.

6. Launch the game, and it should work.

You don't need to delete anything or edit your registry. Hope this helps anyone in the future! :)

It's really weird why Steam doesn't fix it. I hate doing fixes on my own, it's not my job. I just want to play games!

Thank you squareb0x! I know it has been some years since you posted this solution. Even now (about 4 years later) -- it was helpful. Seems like this note should be pinned to the top since it is likely that ANYBODY that launches this game on Steam would run into this problem.

Not everyone who launches this game on the Steam platform experiences this problem. I didn't, ever. There are a wide variety of causes for game launch failure, most of them having NOTHING whatsoever to do with Steam's services, and more to do with how the user has configured and maintained his own machine's hardware and systems.

Also, a Plus to Steam gaming enthusiasts: Steam is pretty diligent in fixing this type of problem. For example, the retail version of Grand Theft Auto IV Complete will NOT install on Windows 10 machines, citing: Failure to meet minimum specifications. I had to abandon my retail license from Windows XP and Windows 7 to buy the Steam version that works flawlessly on Windows 10.

I had that issue, (and I know I am about a few years late, so I apologize if this is of no concern now) but what helped me was to delete steam and reinstall it. Game works now (and hopefully will stay that way).
