Also, do the protagonist really have to be Afro?
Don't get me wrong, I love how artistic Afro is, and have admired a lot of Afro artworks out there. But it's kinda mismatch with the whole art/music concept/theme you are trying to do there. Just my opinion, Afro characters are more suitable bathed in spotlights...
I can understand you're trying to get inspiration from old school music artist like Gris's design, but the background you're using doesn't match the Afro character well imo... You need to go a bit more... wild... in the background design to make the character stands out.
Or you can make some changes to the character itself so it can blends in with your preferred background.. something like this (example[www.vecteezy.com]), and animate the hair while running, and maybe put a trails of flowers particle behind will certainly makes the character stands out.
