Battle simulations
Hey! Im back, miss me? As if!

Anyway, what im about to suggest is an idea i've contemplated for a while now. It doesnt add anything to gameplay per se, rather its more of a social feature if you will... just hear me out:

Battle Simulations is in essense the ability to rewatch a mission in real time, without the planning phases. In otherwords you watch the mission uninterupted from start to finish, from when the ships first jump in to the sector to when the last enemy is destroyed (or whenever the mission ended).

This would be particularly cool if when a mission finishes and you recieve your rewards, in the background, instead of the ships freezing it instead plays the mission again real time. Below the current 'Ok' button to finish viewing the results, there could be a button tagged 'Watch Simulation'.

Selecting 'Watch Simulation' takes you back to the mission sector where the mission replays on loop. It would be nice to be able to indirectly interact with it using advanced functions such as;
  • Map roaming - Freely scroll about the map like in the planning phase
  • 'Pause' - pauses simulation
  • 'Track ship' - click on a ship to follow it with the camera (click again to disengage)
  • 'Ship stats' - double click a ship to open its stats window (like the hangar page)

However for a bare bones version, just a looping replay would be fine for testing. while watching the simulation you will have two options in the corners of the screen.

  • 'End Simulation' - Takes you back to menu
  • 'Save Simulation' - Saves replay for later viewing and returns you to menu

So, whats it good for? For now, besides a bit of fun, it can be used to rewatch your missions and learn from your mistakes. It also allows players to go back and save examples of bugs directly instead of trying to reproduce it. It also provides a more interesting and engaging format for players to record and share their amazing achivements (or faliures) in battle with the whole community instead of just using screenshots. And should the day where multiplayer becomes a thing with clans and leagues (idk) it would also provide ways to immortalise these PvP battles for all to see, or simply to keep as a memento.

Welcome back! :)

It's a really cool idea, but it would require some work. Right now my priority is ironing out a couple of bugs, then adding some more content (in terms of mission variety). Other stuff will have to wait, especially if it would require significant amounts of time to implement.

For now I will just add this to the to-do list.

Thanks!

i like the idea, it would help with trying to track down bugs and post whats going on in fights :)

p.s and to watch your best pilot destroy the gladiator quest

A "review mission tapes" or "action replay" button sounds like a good idea to me.

I definitely approve of the dev response of "bugfixes and content first", but it's one of those little details that feels really good in this kind of game (see Frozen Synapse/Cortex where they also added the ability to directly upload your gameplay recording to YouTube, and Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock where they even added a dynamic action camera into the mix)
