Translation quality and consistency
I was exicted for DS game (moege ftw). However, I'm a little disappointed in the translation quality (it's not that bad, but isn't great either).


1. The lack of consistency in the first 5min of the game.

Himari-sama was translated into Miss Himiari. So you decided to tl honorifics - that's ok.

Everything would be fine, but a second later the honorifics are used for MC's name...

2. Converting units.

Meters were converted to feet. Really? And you can clearly hear Ame saying"meter".
If characters would be talking about the distance from Earth to Moon would you also convert it to feet?

So I'm expecting to see dollars instead of yen. But I'm little curious what exchange rate was used in converting yen -> dollar.
If there will be yen nevertheless, then again it means lack of consistency.

3. Using words that aren't commonly used.

This is kinda subjective, but it can make the game less enjoyable for non-native english speakers.

4. The "numbers bug".

If I consider the official "translations" like IMHHW, ChuSinGura, ChronoClock, Libra are released and "accepted" then DS issues are quite minor. But still I would like a satisfying quality for the 33€. On the other hand - a big plus for making ero patch free.

So what are yours thougts on DS translation? Do you like your VNs TL being consistent? Do you like having your units converted while you still hear seyiuu saying the non-converted? Or did you encounter other stuff?

I have to agree. I like my VN's to keep the honorifics but what is with the flipping back and forth? Its almost as if the editor was schizophrenic.

I think mangagamer changed meters to feet because most americans tend to forget the metric system once they leave school though I wish they wouldn't.

I still dont understand whats "so hard" about keeping the honorifics in, to me it feels like needing to translate "pendejo" or "señorita" from spanish because somehow, someone will not understand what do they mean in this day and age.

If my ex-girlfriend who had zero knowledge of japanese can quickly understand all basic honorifics after a few episodes of Samurai X, surely the niche audience that buys visual novels can too.

I like Manga Gamer, but i wish they realised that they can get more $$$ if they understand that not only americans buy their products, Ame's quote feels really weird specially since shes an A.I

Sadly it is mostly translator preference on that end. As there are people on both ends it doesn't really impact sales. (You'll find about as many that skip titles with honorofics as people who skip those without)

Personally I think it is better to keep it as anyone with the tiniest skill in Japanse will say "Hey, the translator made a mistake here" if they do not perform perfectly with the honorifics removal.

Typical examples:
- Write Professor instead of Teacher/Name when Sensei is used with teachers.
- Write brother to an unrelated character when a girl uses sexy oniichan slang.
- When your sentence turn into "Don't call me Ann, call me Ann" because you skipped honorifics.

If you kept honorifics, none of these errors would ever have happened. They can only happen if you choose to make it harder to translate, and if you don't have the skill to translate HARD MODE, you should keep honorifics.

As a C.S graduate... i just died out a bit inside.

I would argue that it's hard to be consistent with a monster text that most VNs have. But to be inconsistent in JUST ONE LINE sure does feel like you're dying a little inside.

I would also vote for retaining honorifics. some may argue that it's a lazy job but if the price to pay for it is consistency then please have them. those that complain about honorifics are just your typical first world problems. most likely aren't your target audience in the first place.

And this is coming from an Asian fully aware that there are words in one language that simply has no perfect alternative in another language.

Also, i guess you didint catch the "hot" LED reference i was trying to make, but nvm, no need to be angry with me.

I read The Watchmaker of Filigree Street. It is a normal English novel with honorifics in it, because it contained Japanese people and they wanted to convey how Japanese people interact.

No translation notes. No explanations. The reader is simply expected to accept that it is how Japanese speak.

It is always silly that a normal novel can do this, while people run around and think Japanese novels could get problems if they don't remove it.

mangagamer -> manga -> manga scanlations -> must have read some -> 50/50 honorifics exposure -> your audience knows what honorifics is -> keep honorifics please

English language is universal for the whole world. ♥♥♥♥ USA. Use metrics system. ALWAYS.

Great. But English is global language, and literally whole world is using metrics system. This kind of localization is nothing but cacner.
Same with honorifics and name swapping to be honest.

You're referring to grammar. sure a Light Emitting Diode Light makes no sense, it's redundant.

He's not referring to grammar. LED's are cool to the touch, they do not emit heat the way halogen bulbs do, thus they are not hot.

By the way, there is a line (find out when the hat can speak) when Himari says: "What?!", but the voice line says that something like "Agh, it's just out of habit". That was insane.
