I am trying to raise the ship for the Stoneship Age. I know the leaf, insect, and serpent have to be selected, but nothing happens when I change their color. Is there something that I am missing?

I was trying to get through the whole game without resorting to a guide or help but now I'm stuck. I believe I have completed all ages except for the one I am currently in: the mechanical age with the rotating fortress. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. I am currently in the Stoneship Age. I've been able to locate the red and blue pages, but for some reason, whenever I pick up one of them, the other disappears from my "inventory" and returns to where it originally was. Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a better way to resolve this other than to start a new save file?...
