Is it still worth it in 2024?
Hello, I've had this game on my wishlist since May 2019, and I'm currently cleaning up my wishlist. I see that the game is on sale right now, and I was wondering if it's still worth buying. It looks a bit outdated graphically, or maybe it would be better with a few mods, but I haven't checked the available mods for this game yet. ^^

I mean "outdated" is a bit of a weird thing to say about a remaster of an old game. It looking 20 years old is... kind of the point. Because this is an old game from 2006, only remastered - not reMADE.

If you're into old-ish JPRGs and FF games in particular, this definitely holds up. It's really the last of the old-school FFs, before things turned more towards action gameplay with XIII and what came after.

Plus this has some amazing mods, like Struggle for Freedom ;)

If you like these kinds of games, this is one of the better ones. And of the FF remasters, this is probably the one they did the best job on. It has 60fps, split audio/text languages, all the things.

Is that "worth it"? Only you can decide.

If it was worth it in 2019 why wouldn't it be worth it in 2024?

The game is really good for what it is. But as Hinyuu said: it can only be worth it if YOU like it.
For me it was worth it - i like the a bit slower gameplay and progression, i like the gambit-system, i like that it feels a bit like an MMO, that the main character you play is not the focus of the story.
And the world really feels more alive than previous games and looks great.
But if you want a touching emotional story or just "we are the saviours" or be completely invincible (ok, that can always be done) then this is not so much it.

Well it was cheaper when I bought it, but that was off Steam.

I'd absolutely say the game is worth a shot - I hated it when it originally released on PS2, but when I gave this version a shot I ended up really loving it.

It's definitely an acquired taste, but if you're willing to give it an honest attempt there's a lot to love here.
The story is written noticeably well by modern FF standards (be aware though that there's not much of the traditional JRPG inter-character melodrama here, the story is focused on the greater picture and political scheming instead) and presented with a lot of respect to player's intelligence, the visuals are genuinely fantastic for the most part and while the gameplay is definitely odd, there's a lot of nuance and depth here as well.

I'm not big on many JRPGs but FF12 was a true work of art, albeit flaw'd. It had many qualities which set itself apart and often above RPGs of then & now. This version adds a dual-class job system, adding some new reward & complexity the original didn't have. You can even re-spec & change jobs since some update.

I've return'd to this game after taking a break from new stuff like Dragon's Dogma 2, Baldur's Gate 3, &c. FF12 withstands Time's test.

Can't stress this enough. The designers took their game very seriously & treat'd everything with respect, including the player. The English voice acting's good too, a rare feat.
Playing it for the first time in 2024, its a fantastic game.
Its currently $20, stop being cheap. It's clearly worth it.
I just bought this, its good, graphics are charming and hold up really well and the cutscenes are way better then I remember.

Honestly the intro cutscene is movie level quality.

I did play the original when it came out but didn't get that far but what I did play was good but I traded in my ps2 around that time for a 360. I just remember kinda being in a desert area and getting a license, i always associated the licenses with hunting and assumed this game was like a Monster Hunter game or pokemon or something but you hunt them, kinda like castlevania familiars

Also I hear FF Tactics takes place in the same universe as FF12

No, but for what it's worth it wasn't worth it in 2023 either.
its a good game, feels like an offline FFXI at times, mixed with Vagrant Story, which was one of my favorite PSX games of all time. The story is good, but the protagonist is stoopid. Vaan is the dumbest, most selfish POS protagonist i can think of off the top of my head.
Vaan is only there for the ride. He is our eyes, so to speak.
I'd describe the group as an ensemble cast, there's no true protagonist.
If you want one, it'd be Ashe and/or Basch.

I feel like Vaan had decent growth and matured quite a bit. I didn't find him to be a pos at any point, myself.
Saying a remaster of a 20 year old game looks outdated is wild, how do you expect it to look?
